2009 World Series of Poker - Event #50 - Limit Hold’em Shootout $1,500 - Final

Champ Greg Mueller
Greg Mueller is the summer’s newest double bracelet winner after defeating Marc Naalden heads up in the Limit Hold’em Shootout. Their match should be enough to answer those who claim that Limit Hold’em isn’t a skill game. Both players going for the gold tonight had already won bracelets in another Limit tournament this Series. Naalden also cashed in the Mixed Hold’em event.

Mueller ground Naalden (and his formidable rail) down to 500,000. The next hand, Marc raised, and Muller called to see the T 4 3 flop. Mueller checked to Naalden, who bet. FBT called, and checked again after the Kc on the turn. Naalden bet again, but this time Mueller raised him, and Naalden reraised with his entire stack. Mueller called to put Naalden at risk, and with K 2 to Mueller’s K 5, Naalden was drawing thin. The J on the river didn’t help, and Mueller’s kicker played to win the pot and the whole tournament. The Dutch masses managed polite applause for FBT, who scoops $194,854 to go with bracelet #2. Naalden settles for 2 nd place and $120,614.

The final two took a break, but now that they’re back at it, they are still trading the lead every few hands. Greg “FBT” Mueller turned trips to take big pot as soon as they sat down. But Marc Naalden then flopped trips and rivered a boat to take all of those chips back. The Dutchman rivered a straight a few hands later to take a 2.5:1 lead. Until, of course, the next hand when FBT flopped a set. Mueller is now back to the lead with 2 million chips to Naalden’s 1.6 million.

Just as interesting as the poker is the rail dynamic at the feature table. Greg tried to clear his head during the break, but the throng of Dutch supporters is hard to ignore. They cheer for everything. One managed to knock over FBT’s chip stack during the break, and rather than restack them at his chair, Greg moved to sit at the opposite end of the felt from Naalden. The fans are clearly getting to Mueller. He is keeping is play under control, but his jaw looks like it might break, and it’s taking all of his will power to keep from throwing his cards into the muck instead of the stands. If Greg’s usual group of friends don’t show up soon, Full Blown Tilt could start living up to his name.

After going hours this afternoon without an elimination, the Limit Hold’em final table made up for lost time in the last hour. Matt Sterling was the shortest at the table when he looked down at pocket Aces. He bet all the way down a 8 7 5 K 9 board, and Greg Mueller suddenly raised the river. Uh oh. Sterling called to see Mueller’s JT for the straight. Sterling was left with so few chips that he was all in preflop on the next hand and didn’t get lucky. Sterling picked up Q8, but Mueller’s flopped pair of 7s with 97 was enough to get the rest of Matt’s chips. Sterling earns $35,058 for 5th place. Mueller began 4-handed play with a sizable chip lead.

David Williams mixed it up next with Marc Naalden. Naalden opened with a raise, and from the button, Williams repopped. Naalden called to see the J 9 9 flop. Marc check-raised and got a call from David. After the Ten on the turn, Naalden bet out. Williams called again, and called one more bet after the 3 on the river. Naalden tabled K9 for flopped trips, and Williams disgustedly mucked, flashing a Jack. With just 50K left, Williams was all but out. He got it all in from the big blind after a raise from Millie Shiu and reraise from Mueller. Shiu bet the K 8 4 flop, and FBT called. J on the turn, Shiu bet, and Mueller raised. Millie checked the 7 on the river, and called a bet from Greg. Shiu showed pocked Aces, but Mueller’s JJ for the turned set was good for the giant side pot. Williams, with 5 4 , missed the flush, meaning Mueller got the main pot too. David Williams was eliminated in 4th place for $51,145.

Millie Shui was crippled after losing that big pot and another when Mueller flopped two pair. She was all in as the big blind, and Mueller and Marc Naalden both called. Naalden folded to Mueller’s bet on the T 8 5 flop. FBT showed 87, and Shiu’s 42 needed runner-runner help. The King on the turn was it for Shiu, who gets $77,138 for 3rd place.

Greg Mueller began heads up with 2,895,000 to Marc Naalden’s measly 705,000. But Naalden knew he wasn’t out. At his final table earlier in the Series, Naalden began heads up with an even larger advantage and watched his opponent take over the chip lead before he ground him down again to win the bracelet. Naalden mounted an aggressive come back tonight, briefly taking over the chip lead. Mueller turned a set and rivered a boat to get back into the lead. FBT now has 2.1 million to Naalden’s 1.5 million. And with one of poker’s biggest characters up against a Dutchman, the entire Amazon room rocks when either one of them picks up the blinds. Take cover when they actually see a showdown. This could get interesting as both players continue the pursuit of their second Limit Hold’em bracelet of the summer.

Shortly after returning from dinner, Flaminio Malaguti mixed it up with David Williams in a battle of the blinds. Malaguti raised in the SB, and Williams called. Malaguti bet at the T 6 2 flop, and Williams called. Flaminio bet again at the 5 on the turn, and this time, Williams raised, putting Malaguti all in. Flaminio called for his tournament life, showing A K. Williams’ A 5 was in the lead, and the 4 on the river sealed the deal. Malaguti picks up $24,824 for 6th place.

Matt Sterling got it all in next on a 8 7 4 flop holding A 9. Millie Shui’s T 8 dodged the 2 on the turn, but the Ah on the river was enough to double Sterling to 275,000. Sterling then won a big pot from David Williams to chip up to 675,000. But he didn’t get to keep those chips for long. Sterling raised UTG, and BB Millie Shiu flat called. The flop fell K 9 5, and Shiu check-called a bet from Sterling. J on the turn, and Shiu check-raised Sterling, who called. 2 on the river prompted a bet from Shiu. Sterling called, then mucked when he saw Millie’s A A. After the hand, Shiu was up to 825,000 and Stirling is very short with just 180,000. Marc Naalden took 100K of Shiu’s stack a few hands later and is now the chip leader with over 1 million. That means the Dutch rail has license to get even louder. If FBT’s usual crew shows up, there could be some fireworks.

Players are just coming back from dinner break.  Stay tuned...

Joep Van Den Bijgaart lost a big pot to David Williams.  The flop came Q 7  2 , Williams check raised a bet from Van Den Bijaart.  There was a call from Van Den Bijgaart, and the turn came a 6 .  Williams bet, and Van Den Bijgaart called.  The river was an A , and both players checked.  Williams showed 8  8 , and Van Den Bijgaart mucked his hand.  This put Van Den Bijgaart under the 200k mark which is truly detrimental at these levels.

Van Den Bijgaart raised from late position, and Marc Naalden three bet.  Van Den Bijgaart called and the flop came A  2  7 .  Naalden bet, and Van Den Bijgaart raised all in.  Nalden called and showed A  T  against Van Den Bijgaart’s Q  8 .  The turn and river were blanks for Van Den Bijgaart, and he would be our 7th place finisher.

Players are now on a 90 minute dinner break, and will return around 8:00pm.  When players come back Mueller will head the table as the chip leader with 950k, and Matt Sterling is the short stack with 275k.

Jose Barbero was the short stack on the table.  Greg Mueller raised and Jose Barbero called from the big blind.  The flop came A  7  T .  Mueller checked, Barbero bet, and Mueller raised.  Barbero reraised, and Mueller put him all in.  Mueller turned over A  T  for top two pair, while Barbero had K  2  for a flush draw.  The turn was a 6 , and the river was a J . Barbero is the first to go from the final table.  There are now 7 players left.

Greg Mueller has taken over the chip lead with over 840k in chips.  Millie Shiu had a slow start of the day, but she has since recovered and is behind Mueller with 680k in chips.  Flaminio Malaguti is the short stack with 180k.  Players are entering round 4 of the day with 8,000/15,000 blinds and 15,000/30,000 limits.

The flop came 3  2  9 , and Jose Barbero check called Greg Mueller’s bet.  The turn brought the 4h.  Again, Barbero checked, Mueller bet, and Barbero called. The river was the Q , so Barbero checked, and Mueller fired a last time.  Barbero mucked his hand, and Mueller showed K J for king high.

Greg “FBT” Mueller opened, and Jose “Nacho” Barbero three bet.  Mueller four bet, and Barbero called.  The flop was 8  2  9 .  Barbero checked, Mueller bet, and Barbero made the call.  The turn brought the K .  Mueller bet again, and Barbero called.  The river was a 2  which Barbero check called again.  Mueller turned over A  A  to win the hand.

Play is in round 3 of the day with 5,000/10,000 blinds, and 10,000/20,000 limits.  Mueller is in the lead for chips, but Williams is closely behind.  Jose Barbero is the short stack with only 46k.

David Williams has taken an early lead over the table.  In one hand Williams raised on the button and Joep Van Den Bigaart called from the big blind.  The flop came 5  2  4 .  Williams bet, and Van Den Bigaart called.  The turn was a Q , and Williams bet again.  Van Den Bigaart called and the river was a 5 .  Williams bet a last time with Van Den Bigaart calling behind.  Williams turned over A  Q , and Van Den Bigaart mucked his hand.

Millie Shiu slips to 365k after raising from early position.  Marc Naalden three bet from the small blind, and Shiu called.  The flop came T  2  6 .  Naalden bet, and Shiu called.  The turn was a 5 .  Naalden bet, but Shiu let it go.

Seat 3: Joep Van Den Bijgaart
Seat 4: Matt Sterling
Seat 5: Greg "FBT" Mueller

Action was set to start at 2:00, but with the bracelet ceremony it seems that things have gotten off to a slow start.  Stay tuned for more action to come.

The final eight players return today at 2 p.m. PDT. Included in the final eight, are two bracelet winners from this '09 WSOP series, Greg Mueller and Marc Naalden.
