2009 World Series of Poker - Event #46 - Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better $2,500 - Final

Friday, 26th of June 2009 04:00 AM

(Elissa Harwood reporting)

Champ Derek Raymond
After a few more chopped pots, Mark Tenner gave up two in a row before showdown. With the bets so large, he was down to just 200,000. He got it all in preflop with K Q 3 2 against Derek Raymond’s T 5 4 3. The board fell J 7 2 A 4, and with the rivered wheel, Raymond scooped the pot and the bracelet.

Raymond earns $229,192 for his first WSOP paycheck. Tenner takes home $141,647 for 2nd place. A Henderson resident, he has six previous WSOP cashes, including a 4th place finish in Razz last year.

Somehow, Mark Tenner and Derek Raymond are still heads up. Despite beginning their battle with huge blinds, they've both managed to survive all in after all in. Blinds are now 50,000/100,000 and there are only 3.2 million chips in play. Tenner was building a lead, but now that Raymond just took down a sizable pot with a rivered flush, they are again back to even.

Derek Raymond turned a flush and a 65-low to scoop Scott Bohlman, leaving him with just under 400,000. A few hands later, Scott raised preflop, and Mark Tenner called to see the J 7 5 flop. Bohlman bet, and Tenner called. 5 on the turn. This time it took all of Bohlman’s chips to put in a bet, and Tenner made the call, putting Scott at risk. And he was in trouble with A K Q 7 to Tenner’s A K 5 4. No help from the river, and Bohlman was eliminated in 3rd place for $93,199. This is Bohlman’s 13th WSOP cash. He finished 4th in a No Limit event in 2007.

Mark Tenner and Derek Raymond were close to even when they began heads up play, and they’ve been pushing chips back and forth ever since.

It’s been a very interesting hour over on the feature table. Derek Raymond raised, and then called a three-bet from Fabio Coppola. Raymond check-called the flop and turn of the J 7 5 J board. He again checked the Q river and called one more time when Coppola moved all in on the end. With A K T 7, he had Jacks and 7s. Surely Coppola could beat that. But no, he tabled A K 4 3 for 7s and AK-high. The Italians were highly unhappy with Raymond’s call, and they followed Coppola out grumbling. Fabio earns $65,094 for 4th place.

Mark Tenner, the chip leader several levels ago, had been blinding away while the action occurred around him. He was down below 400,000 when flopped a full house to double through Derek Raymond. He then rivered a flush to win a pot from Scott Bohlman and rivered a wheel to scoop against Raymond. Tenner was back in the lead for a good 10 minutes, until he dropped a pot to Raymond and gave the lead back. Now Raymond has 1.4 million, Tenner has an even million, and Bohlman is the shortest with 700,000.

The action slowed down a bit as the final four all seemed to want to stick around at least until the next break. Perhaps when they return to blinds at 25,000/50,000, things will pick up again.

In the one big hand we saw, Fabio Coppola opened with a raise. Scott Bohlman reraised, and Coppola called to see a A J 9 flop. Coppola checked the action to Bohlman, then flatted Scott’s bet. Same action on the J turn and 7 river. Coppola’s A 9 7 4 for three pair and a busted flush draw wasn’t close to beating Bohlman’s full boat with A K J 2. Left with 375,000 after the hand, Coppola and the Italian rail were less than pleased as they headed off for the break.

(Elissa Harwood reporting)
It’s been an action-packed, up-and-down hour of Omaha-8, but there are still four players left after cycling chips around the table. Scott Bohlman flopped a set of Aces and drove the action on an A K 8 4 board. But the 5 on the river made a wheel for Mark Tenner, who scooped the pot and knocked Bohlman back to 375,000. He was down to 250,000 a few orbits later. He check-called Derek Raymond on an 8 4 3 flop and again after the 7 turn. One more check-call after the 8 on the river, and somehow, at showdown, Bohlman’s A K T 2 was just enough to take the high from Raymond’s A Q 5 2. They split the low, and with three-quarters of the pot, Bohlman was back to 575,000.

Derek Raymond also managed to get all the way down to 150,000 after getting quartered, then river a straight and a low to double up through Fabio Coppola’s set of Aces. He doubled again making quad Queens and was back above 500,000.

So after an interesting hour, Mark Tenner is still the chip leader with about 1.1 million. Fabio Coppola is next with 900K, followed by Scott Bohlman with 700K and Derek Raymond with 540K.

Sirous Jamshidi was very short when he got involved in a pot with Scott Bohlman. Sirous checked the 5 4 2 7 board. Scott bet at it, and Jamshidi considered before moving all in. Bohlman didn’t need any time to think before calling. Jamshidi knew he needed a miracle before the cards went face up. His Q 5 4 2 was in bad shape against Bohlman’s A K J 3. Scott’s wheel would have been enough for the scoop, but the 9 on the river gave him the nut flush as well. Jamshidi hit the rail in 6th place, picking up $37,350. This is his first cash of the Series and his 3rd WSOP final table appearance. He finished 4th in events in 2007 and 2008, but he earned the biggest paycheck when he finished 16th in the 2006 Main Event for $660K.

After a quick break to color-up the 1,000 chips, the final table got back to the action. Josh Schlein managed to survive several all ins with chopped pots. After Scott Bohlman hit a lucky river to take the low half of a pot that Schlein was set to scoop, Josh was down to his last 110,000. He got it all in preflop against Derek Raymond. It was Schlein’s 7 6 5 5 against Raymond’s Q T 4 3. The board came A Q 6 J 8, giving the whole pot to Raymond and sending Schlein home in 5th place. He takes $48,028 with him on his way out the door.

The final six have been back from dinner for about half an hour, and they brought a full rail back with them. In addition to a slew of online players and Italians (including Dario Minieri and Max Pescatori), commissioner Jeffrey Pollack is even in attendance in his trademark pinstriped fabulousness.
So far, Scott Bohlman has been the big winner this level. He and Josh Schlein were heads up after a raise and reraise to see a 7 6 4 flop. Bet from Schlein and call from Bohlman to the 5 turn. Bet and call again to see the 2 on the river. Josh bet again, and Scott checked his cards a few times before sticking in a raise. Schlein slid out the extra chips, showing down A K 3 2 to Bohlman’s A 6 5 3. Scott quartered Schlein to chip up to 482,000.

Mark Tenner is still the giant stack with over 1.3 million. Fabio Coppola is next with 487,000, followed by Scott Bohlman. Sirious Jamshidi is the very, very short stack with 115,000, about 4.5 big blinds.

Players are on an 80 minute dinner break.

(O'Keeya Singleton reporting)

Two more players have early dinner plans.  Former Poker Superstars Invitational host Mark Gregorich was out of the commentators’ booth and out of the tournament in 8th place.  His day of poker was ended when he raised all-in preflop.  Josh Schlein and Mark Tenner called.  The Flop came 8 K 4; Tenner bet and Schlein called.  Tenner bet again on the K Turn, this time Schlein folded.   Gregorich showed his A T K T and Tenner revealed K J 8 9 .  Gregorich made trip Kings, but Tenner had made a Full House with Kings and Eights.  The 6 on the River couldn’t’ save Gregorich and he was gone.

Michael Keiner was next to leave.  In fact he was eliminated in the very next hand after Gregorvich.  Keiner moved all-in preflop and was called by Derek Raymond.  Keiner showed A T 5 5 and Raymond revealed his J 9 4 3 .  The Flop came K J 8 and gave Raymond a pair of Jacks which bested Keiner’s Fives.  The Turn was the 8 and gave Raymond Jacks-up.  Keiner could win with a heart or an Ace.  The River was neither, it was the 6 .  Keiner took the 7th place prize.

Two players were eliminated this hour.  John Monnette was sent home in 10th place.  Monnette’s preflop bet was reraised by Michael Keiner, putting Monnette all-in if he called.  He did and showed 9 5 7 6 .  Keiner showed A A 3 8 and the Flop came 7 2 Q .  Monnette made Sevens but was still be hind the Aces.  He remained behind after the Turn J and River 2 .  Monnette’s day is done, out in 10th.

Pat Poels also departed stage left this hour.    Pat Poels raised preflop and was reraised by Scott Bohlman.   Poels called and the Flop came 8 8 7 .  Bohlman, out of position, bet and Poels called.  Bohlman bet again on the Turn 9 , but Poels reraised and pushed all his chips in.  Poels showed A A J J and Bohlman revealed his A A 7 4 .  Both players had the Dead Man’s hand Aces and Eights.  The River was the 5 and Bohlman made a River spade Flush to eliminate Poels in 9th

Two players were eliminated this hour.  The first one to go was Patrice Boudet.  He left in 12th place.  Boudet raised all-in preflop and was called by Pat Poels and Michael Keiner.  The Flop came 9 8 T .  Boudet and Poels checked the Flop, Turn (J ) and River (J ).  Boudet had played A 5 2 7 .  Keiner turned over his K 9 9 7 .  Poels didn’t show his hand.  Keiner took down the pot with Nines full of Jacks and Boudet was out.

JW Smith was next to go.  He would leave in 11th place when his double suited Aces lost to a set of Kings.

(O'Keeya Singleton reporting)

We lost three more players this hour.  The first was Danny Smith in 15th.  Smith moved all-in preflop and was called by Sirious Jamshidi.  Smith showed T 8 7 5 and Jamshidi had A 9 2 Q .   The Flop cam J 4 T and Smith paired Tens.  The 4 on the turn kept things the same, but the Q on the River gave Jamshidi a winning pair of Queens.

Next out was James Dempsey in 14th place. Dempsey moved all-in on the Flop and was called by Fabio Coppola and Pat Poels.  The Flop was 2 6 J .  Dempsey showed A K 9 2 .  Coppola and Poels both checked on the Turn (3 ) and the River (A ).  Coppola showed  9 Q Q 4 and Poels mucked it.  Dempsey made Aces and two, but Poels made a flush on the Flop. Neither player could make a low, so Poels scooped and Dempsey was out.

Jeff Tunkel finished as unlucky number 13.

Two players were eliminated this hour. Meng La was the first to go.  He exited in 18th place. He moved the last of his chips in on the River.  The board read 2 A T Q 3 and La turned over K Q 3 4 .  The other player showed A 4 2 T for Aces-up over La’s Queens-up.  Neither player made a low hand and La was gone.

CK Hua was next to go.  Short Stacked, he checked and then raised Josh Schlein’ s bet on the Flop.  The Flop was A 9 T .  Schlein called and the Q was the next card off the deck.   Hua bet again and again Schlein called.  Hua checked the River K and tossed his hand when Schlein bet.  That left Hua with only four Big Blinds and was soon on his way to the exit.

(Aaron Angerman reporting)

Twenty-three of the original 424 starters were still hanging around when the Day 3 cards went into the air at 1 p.m. PDT.  After just one hour, only 18 are still fighting for the $2,500 Omaha-8 or Better bracelet and they've consolidated to a pair of tables.  The biggest name was actually the first to fall.

Mike Matusow arrived today as one of the short stacks with just 62K.  His first all in confrontation saw "The Mouth" get it all in pre to double thru Pat Poels.  His next attempt didn't go as well.

Down to just 20K, Matusow picked up Aces and shipped.  James "Flushy" Dempsy has Aces as well, and made the call to table A A 6 5.  Matusow showed A A Q 6 but after the board K 8 7 K 4 Dempsy rendered the shared Aces irrelevant as he rivered an 8-high straight, eliminating Matusow in 23rd.

Matusow was followed to the rail by David Rabbi and Jonah Seewald, who each earned the same as the Mouth ($7,411) for finishing 22nd and 21st, respectively.

Victor Deltoro was crippled after a run in with Patrice Boudet.  Deltoro held trip eights and the nut low draw by the turn, while Boudet had made a club flush on the same street and called a Deltoro raise.  The river bricked off a 9 and both checked.  Deltoro was shown the bad news and was left with just 20K.

Deltoro shipped those last few chips a few hands later, but had his final pot chopped up by Frankie O'Dell and Sirous Jamshidi to finish 20th.

The final elimination of the first hour was Jim Banafato.  Banafato would get it all in holding 6 5 3 2 after a 7 4 2 flop (two spades).   J.W. Smith isolated and showed A K 6 3 for the nut low, along with the nut spade draw.  But after the board finished with a pair of non-spade sevens, all J.W. needed was AK-high to take the high pot, and the nut low meant he scooped Banafato out 19th.

Blinds just jumped to 5,000/10,000.

We've reached the final day of play of the $2,500 Omaha Hi/Lo 8-Or-Better event here at the 2009 WSOP. The remaining 23 players are ready to make their final push and try to capture the bracelet and the $220,192 first place prize money. Mark Tenner has the chip lead starting the day, and there are still many recognizable faces in the hunt including Mike Matusow and Mark Gregorich, as well as the Day 1 chip leader Josh Schlein. The action will begin at 1 p.m. PDT and Poker Pages will be bringing you all of the LIVE updates. Stay tuned for the battle on the felt.
