Gowen Gone:

Clonie Gowen had shipped her last remaining chips into the middle pre-flop, and was called by only one player. She showed A 6 4 2 while her opponent tabled A J 9 2 . Gowen was able to take 3 quarters of the pot when the board came out Q 5 4 5 8 .

Unfortunately for her, she didn't last long after that. A few hands later she was all-in pre-flop again. This time holding A 7 3 3 , and this time she was called by an opponent holding 9 8 6 5 . She would be eliminated as the cards came down 2 3 7 8 4 .

Fading To Grey:

David Grey was crippled after being in a hand against 2 other players. Grey called every step of the way, and after all the cards were out, the board showed 4 9 6 8 K . When his opponents turned over their cards, one of them tabled T 7 4 4 , and the other had A T 5 2 , Grey simply mucked.

Not long after, Grey was all-in pre-flop with A K Q J , and was called by an opponent who was holding K 9 4 4 . The board came down J 4 7 A T , and Grey had survived, but was down to only 600 chips.

Monnette Chops:

When the flop came down 2 7 T , John Monnette was check-called by his opponent. A came on the turn, and once again Monnette got check-called. 5 on the river and this time Monnette's opponent led out. Monnette raised and was called. Monnette turned over A 8 4 3 , and chopped the pot with his opponent holding A K T 9 .

Here Are Some Of The Larger Stacks At The End Of Day 1:

Max Pescatori - 30,000
Thang Luu - 40,000
Mickey Appleman - 31,8000
Armando Ruiz - 41,000

Day 1 has ended and the remaining players will try to get some much needed rest before continuing to do battle across the felt tomorrow.

Another Chop For Fergusson:

Once again, Chris Fergusson was all-in. This time it was after the turn had come down and the board read J 3 T 7 . Fergusson held K T 2 5 while his opponent was holding K K Q T . The A on the river made the low for Fergusson, and he was able to stay alive a bit longer with the chop.

Matt Moving Up:

After all the community cards were down and showed a board of Q 5 3 K 7 , Matt Burgoine was all-in and had a caller. Burgoine flipped over A Q 8 2 to take the high and split the low with his opponent who was holding A K 2 3 .

Some Of The Current Chip Counts Around The Room:

Dan Heimiller - 11,000
Mike Sexton - 14,500
Todd Brunson - 8,500
Mel Judah - 7,500
John Juanda - 6,700
Max Pescatori - 20,000

Madsen Rivers To Cripple Opponent:

A player was all-in pre-flop and was called by Jeff Madsen. Madsen held A A T 3 while his opponent had A Q 9 2 . The board ran out K 8 4 3 2 , and Madsen was able to win the high and split the low leaving his opponent short-stacked.

Fergusson Gets Some Help:

Chris Fergusson was short-stacked and raised from the BB. 2 other players called and the flop came down 6 K 3 . The player in the SB checked, Fergusson bet, the other player folded, and the SB made the call. After the 5 came on the turn, the SB player led out, and Fergusson moved all-in over the top. He was called and the cards were turned over. Fergusson showed A 6 4 3 and his opponent held K J T 5 . 9 fell on the river and the 2 chopped the pot, keeping Fergusson alive, but still short on chips.

Crocodile Tears:

Vanessa Selbst took a bite out of Billy "The Croc" Argyros by getting all of her chips in on a board of Q J 5 6 . Selbst was holding A Q 9 4 , and Argyros had A J 4 2 . Argyros was unable to make a low when the river brought the K , and he may have cried some crocodile tears as he had just doubled Selbst up.

Big Bloch:

Andy Bloch was up against 2 other players and looking at a flop of 2 A 4 . After it was checked to him, he bet from the button and was called by both other players. 3 on the turn and after a bet and a call, Bloch raised. He got a call from one of the others, but the last player folded, leaving it heads-up for the rest of the hand. J fell on the river and another bet and call. Bloch turned over 5 A 3 A for the high and half of the low as his opponent held 5 A Q T .

Up And Down For Minieri:

After being down to just 375 chips a while ago, Dario Minieri had battled back to stay alive, but took another hit in a 3-way hand. After a flop of 8 K T , it was checked to Minieri who bet. Frankie O'Dell raised it up, the other player folded, and Minieri called. A on the turn, and O'Dell led out and was called by Minieri again. 7 fell on the river, and once again O'Dell bet and Minieri called. O'Dell turned over K K 4 Q , and Minieri could only muck as O'Dell scooped the pot.

Prize Pool Info:

The players are competing for their share of the $975,200 prize pool, with $229,129 going to the first place finisher.

Before The Break:

Andreas Krause was in the BB, and started the action from there after the flop came down 4 Q 5 . 3 players came along, and the 6 came on the turn. He led out again, and after losing one opponent was called by the other 2. 8 fell on the river, and Krause check-called a bet from one opponent. Another also called and the last folded. Krause was able to chop the pot holding 3 5 5 7 with one of them holding A 2 T Q as the other mucked.

The players are off to dinner and should return around 10:40pm PDT. Stay tuned to Poker Pages for all the updates on the action around the tables.

Clonie Gowan - 4,600

The pros are still arriving to throw their hat in the ring with the others in this talent-stacked field.

Billy "The Croc" Gets A Chop:

After the board was all the way down and was showing J A 4 8 A , Billy Argyros and his opponent both checked. Argyros turned over 5 3 8 2 to take the low, while his opponent held J J K T to win the high and chop the pot with Billy.

Anybody Got A Quarter?:

Alex Kravchenko was unhappy about getting only a quarter of the pot after splitting the low with one opponent on a board of 6 5 J A T . Kravchenko was holding 2 3 6 Q . One of his opponents held 2 3 7 2 , while a third player at the table took the high with A Q 7 8 .

Graham Splits:

After a board of 3 9 K 5 6 , Matt Graham was check-called by his opponent, and turned over A 2 8 3 to chop the pot. His opponent held 4 8 A K .

Level:

SB 50
BB 100
Bets 100-200

Maridu Mayrinck was seen scooping a pot giving her stack an early boost.

Scott Clements was seen betting a board of 2 Q  6 K 7 , he was called and Clements showed J 3  A 8  for a flush and the nut low to scoop the pot.

Daniel Negreanu is now in the field. He is eating his dinner while sitting at Mike Matusow's table. He was seen chopping a pot with three eights and the other player had the nut low. After the hand Negreanu was heard saying "I have lost my mind". This is Negreanu's 3rd event he played today. The first was day 2 of the Razz tourney and the second was Day 1 of the 10K Pot Limit Holdem Championship event. Hopefully, he will be able to final table this one!

Allen Kessler twittered that he missed his draws in a hand to lose a decent sized pot.

Shannon Elizabeth was seen laughing with her table mates.

The field is starting to get bigger. There are many packed tables now that were 7 handed before.

This event is new to the 2009 WSOP and looks like it is having success.

Players took a 20 minute break. They have just returned. They will play 8 levels tonight according to the tournament director.

When they return they will be at Level:

SB: 75
BB: 150
Bets 150-300

Players are still filing in.

They are on level 2 of the day:

SB 50
BB 100
Bets 100-200

The clock reads 385 entrants so far and more are coming in.

Vanessa Selbst, Alex Kravchenko and Shannon Elizabeth have arrived.

A pro packed table?: Seated together are Gavin Smith, Todd Brunson and Kristy Gazes.

Annie Duke is now in the field.

Yesterday's bracelet winner Matt Graham is in the field and is wearing his new shiny gold bracelet.

We saw Kelly Kim betting a flop to win a pot.

Not many hands have made it to a turn card that we have seen thus far.

Action continues.

Tuesday, 23rd of June 2009 06:00 PM
(Amanda Rosenfeld reporting)

Play began just a bit ago at around 5:25 p.m. local time.

Players are still arriving. Players we spotted are Kristy Gazes, Barry Greenstein and Allen Kessler.

Scott Clements is in the field. He has done well this year in Omaha events.

We saw Jerry Buss take down a pot. He busted from the Razz tournament earlier and is now giving Omaha a try.

Most of the professionals were concerned with Miami John Cernuto. He collapsed in the Razz tournament which is in front of the Omaha tournament in the Brazilia room.

Stay tuned as action is just underway....

Tuesday brings the start of another split game event in the form of a $2,500 buy-in Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better tournament. New to the 2009 World Series of Poker schedule, this event is likely to attract a field of well rounded pros from across the globe. The pots begin to split at 5 p.m. Las Vegas local time and Poker Pages will be on the Rio floor to capture all of the key hands.
