2009 World Series of Poker - Event #46 - Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better $2,500 - Day 1

Wednesday, 24th of June 2009 03:00 AM (Jonas Alt reporting) Gowen Gone: Clonie Gowen had shipped her last remaining chips into the middle pre-flop, and was called by only one player. She showed A 6 4 2 while her opponent tabled A J 9 2 . Gowen was able to take 3 quarters of the pot when the board came out Q 5 4 5 8 .Unfortunately for her, she didn't last long after that. A few hands later she was all-in pre-flop again. This time holding A 7 3 3 , and this time she was called by an opponent holding 9 8 6 5 . She would be eliminated as the cards came down 2 3 7 8 4 .Fading To Grey: David Grey was crippled after being in a hand against 2 other players. Grey called every step of the way, and after all the cards were out, the board showed 4 9 6 8 K . When his opponents turned over their cards, one of them tabled T 7 4 4 , and the other had A T 5 2 , Grey simply mucked.Not long after, Grey was all-in pre-flop with A K Q J , and was called by an opponent who was holding K 9 4 4 . The board came down J 4 7 A T , and Grey had survived, but was down to only 600 chips.Monnette Chops: When the flop came down 2 7 T , John Monnette was check-called by his opponent. A came on the turn, and once again Monnette got check-called. 5 on the river and this time Monnette's opponent led out. Monnette raised and was called. This time it was after the turn had come down and the board read J 3 T 7 . Fergusson held K T 2 5 while his opponent was holding K K Q T . The A on the river made the low for Fergusson, and he was able to stay alive a bit longer with the chop.Matt Moving Up: After all the community cards were down and showed a board of Q 5 3 K 7 , Matt Burgoine was all-in and had a caller. Madsen held A A T 3 while his opponent had A Q 9 2 . The board ran out K 8 4 3 2 , and Madsen was able to win the high and split the low leaving his opponent short-stacked.Fergusson Gets Some Help: Chris Fergusson was short-stacked and raised from the BB. 2 other players called and the flop came down 6 K 3 . The player in the SB checked, Fergusson bet, the other player folded, and the SB made the call. After the 5 came on the turn, the SB player led out, and Fergusson moved all-in over the top. He was called and the cards were turned over. Fergusson showed A 6 4 3 and his opponent held K J T 5 . 9 fell on the river and the 2 chopped the pot, keeping Fergusson alive, but still short on chips.Crocodile Tears: Vanessa Selbst took a bite out of Billy "The Croc" Argyros by getting all of her chips in on a board of Q J 5 6 . Selbst was holding A Q 9 4 , and Argyros had A J 4 2 . Argyros was unable to make a low when the river brought the K , and he may have cried some crocodile tears as he had just doubled Selbst up.Wednesday, 24th of June 2009 12:00 AM (Jonas Alt reporting) Big Bloch: Andy Bloch was up against 2 other players and looking at a flop of 2 A 4 . After it was checked to him, he bet from the button and was called by both other players. 3 on the turn and after a bet and a call, Bloch raised. He got a call from one of the others, but the last player folded, leaving it heads-up for the rest of the hand. J fell on the river and another bet and call. Bloch turned over 5 A 3 A for the high and half of the low as his opponent held 5 A Q T .Up And Down For Minieri: After being down to just 375 chips a while ago, Dario Minieri had battled back to stay alive, but took another hit in a 3-way hand. After a flop of 8 K T , it was checked to Minieri who bet. Frankie O'Dell raised it up, the other player folded, and Minieri called. A on the turn, and O'Dell led out and was called by Minieri again. 7 fell on the river, and once again O'Dell bet and Minieri called. O'Dell turned over K K 4 Q , and Minieri could only muck as O'Dell scooped the pot.Tuesday, 23rd of June 2009 11:00 PM (Jonas Alt reporting) Back To The Felt: The players have just returned from the dinner break and the cards are back in the air. There are 425 players in this event at this point, and we'll have to wait and see who takes control and gets rolling as the tournament continues through level 10 this evening. Prize Pool Info: The players are competing for their share of the $975,200 prize pool, with $229,129 going to the first place finisher. Tuesday, 23rd of June 2009 10:00 PM (Jonas Alt reporting) Before The Break: Andreas Krause was in the BB, and started the action from there after the flop came down 4 Q 5 . 3 players came along, and the 6 came on the turn. He led out again, and after losing one opponent was called by the other 2. 8 fell on the river, and Krause check-called a bet from one opponent. Another also called and the last folded. Krause was able to chop the pot holding 3 5 5 7 with one of them holding A 2 T Q as the other mucked.The players are off to dinner and should return around 10:40pm PDT. Argyros turned over 5 3 8 2 to take the low, while his opponent held J J K T to win the high and chop the pot with Billy.Anybody Got A Quarter?: Alex Kravchenko was unhappy about getting only a quarter of the pot after splitting the low with one opponent on a board of 6 5 J A T . Scott Clements was seen betting a board of 2 Daniel Negreanu is now in the field. He is eating his dinner while sitting at Mike Matusow's table. He was seen chopping a pot with three eights and the other player had the nut low. After the hand Negreanu was heard saying "I have lost my mind". This is Negreanu's 3rd event he played today. The first was day 2 of the Razz tourney and the second was Day 1 of the 10K Pot Limit Holdem Championship event. Hopefully, he will be able to final table this one! Allen Kessler twittered that he missed his draws in a hand to lose a decent sized pot. Shannon Elizabeth was seen laughing with her table mates. The field is starting to get bigger. There are many packed tables now that were 7 handed before. This event is new to the 2009 WSOP and looks like it is having success. Players took a 20 minute break. They have just returned. Not many hands have made it to a turn card that we have seen thus far. Action continues. Players we spotted are Kristy Gazes, Barry Greenstein and Allen Kessler. Scott Clements is in the field. He has done well this year in Omaha events. We saw Jerry Buss take down a pot. He busted from the Razz tournament earlier and is now giving Omaha a try. Most of the professionals were concerned with Miami John Cernuto. He collapsed in the Razz tournament which is in front of the Omaha tournament in the Brazilia room.
Tuesday brings the start of another split game event in the form of a $2,500 buy-in Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better tournament. New to the 2009 World Series of Poker schedule, this event is likely to attract a field of well rounded pros from across the globe. The pots begin to split at 5 p.m. Las Vegas local time and Poker Pages will be on the Rio floor to capture all of the key hands. |
