Champ Jordan Smith
Jordan Smith is the Event #36, $2,000 No Limit Hold'em, champion.

That didn't take long.  Just minutes after getting back from break, Jordan Smith finished off Ken Lennaard to grab the bracelet.

Lennaard didn't go down without a fight, though.  First, he doubled up.

Smith opened with a raise and Lennaard shipped his last 1.8 million.  Smith looked him up with A7.  Lennaard turned over JJ.  The board came ten-high and Lennard jumped to more than 3.6 million chips.

Lennard continued to fight back.  He opened another pot with a raise to 300K.  Smith called and 8 4 3 fell on the board.  Lennaard led out for 350K and Smith shipped.  Lennaard called off the rest of his chips.

Lennaard: J 8
Smith: 9 7

Smith flops the flush to Lennaard's top pair and diamond re-draw.  But after the board ran out 3 and 6, Smiths diamond flush was still good.

Ken Lennaard of Stockholm, Sweden, finishes as the Event #36 runner-up, worth $360,439.

Smith will take $586,212 back to Kemp, TX, and his first WSOP gold bracelet.  Prior to the win, Smith's biggest live score was a win at a WPT Southern Poker Championship $1K prelim event in January, worth $119,228.  But he's no stranger to the Rio.  This latest cash was Smith's 11th in the last three WSOP's.  That does it for today.  Thanks for checking out our Event #36 coverage and congrats, Jordan.

Lennaard is on the ropes.

Upon returning from the last break, Lennard picked up a set of aces and bet Smith out of a nice pot.  It wasn't long before Lennaard was 1.5 million chips up on the one time chip leader.  Then... a big one.

Lennaard started the pot with a raise to 250K and Smith called.  8 7 5 on the flop and Smith check-called a tiny bet to see a King turn.  Smith check-called again, this time for 300K.  The river brought a 6 and a huge bet from Smith, 900K.  Lennard then moved all in and Smith snapped him off.  Lennard turned over J 9 for the 9-high straight.  But Smith showed T9 for the nut straight, ten-high, leaving Lennard with that 1.5 million we talked about.

Since then, Lennaard has picked up a handful of small pots and pushed his stack to 1.9 million, but is still way behind the 8 million + of Smith.

The two just agreed to take another break.  Play will resume shortly.

Katja Thater was the last female to capture an open event bracelet, topping 340 others to claim a Razz title in 2007.  Thater will hold onto that claim for at least another day.

Laurence Grondin had fallen to third in chips just before break.  Upon returning, it took just a few hands for her to ship it in a pot with Lennaard.

With 8 5 3 on the board and a raise to 500K from Lennaard in front of her, Grondin announced she was all in and Lennard beat her into the pot to table 5 3 for bottom two pair.  Grondin showed Q8 for top pair and had her corner screaming for a "Queen!"  But after the turn T and river K missed her, the stage was set for heads-up.

Laurence Grondin is out in 3rd-place, earning a healthy $237,537.

Entering heads-up play, Jordan Smith held 5,220,000 to Ken Lennaard's 4,950,000 for the narrowest of chip leads.

After a couple quick pots, Smith would soon be up 6.5 million to 3.5 million.  But some aggressively played quad nines by Lennard would get paid off to once again close the gap.

Holding 99, Lennaard would raise pre and bet 150K after the T 9 3 fop.  Smith then check-called another 400K after the 9 turn and 600K after the 4 river to see Lennaard table the four nines.

As it stands now, Lennard is within a million of Smith.  The two are now taking a very short break.

We lost another one.  Left with just 1.2 million after the confrontations with Grondin, Morneau has been eliminated.

The money didn't get all in until the river on the Q 9 8 K 2 board.  After a 325K bet from Jordan Smith, Morneau shipped and Smith insta-called.  Morneau quickly tabled 7 4 for the flush, but after Smith showed him T 8 for the higher flush, it was time to play three-handed.

Joe Morneau has been eliminated in 4th, good for $166,584.

With the pot, Smith regained the chip lead with almost 5 million.  That lead would widen after Grondin doubled up Lennaard, her 33 coming up short to his A5.  Then just before break, Lennard would take down another nice pot with a nut flush to sneak ahead of Grondin in the counts.

The trio went to break, Smith holding 5.2 million chips to Lennaard's 2.5 million and Grondin's 2.3 million.  They will return to 5K antes and 30K/60K blinds.

Four-handed now, and Grondin has taken the chip lead.

Right after Atchinson bit the dust, Anthony Roux was following him out in 5th-place.

In a ol' fashioned battle of the blinds, Roux raised and Morneau re-popped from the BB.  Roux then shipped and Morneau looked him up.  When the cards were turned, Roux found out he ran his A8 into AQ.  After neither improved on the board, Morneau's AQ-high was good.

Anthony Roux has been eliminated in 5th, earning $120,311.

Morneau added to his chip lead, only to double up Jordan Smith in a race to swap places.  Morneau dipped below 3 million, but would pick up another million after flopping a set of fives and getting good value out a couple of Grondin calls.

Morneau would then take a hand off as Ken Lennaard got it all in bad.

Lennard looked down at QJ on the button and shipped it.  Smith made the call from the BB with KQ.  A roller coaster of oohs and aahs would follow the board as it ran out T Q 3 K A.  Smith had two pair on the turn, and Lennard already had his backpack on, but an Ace on the river helped the short stack hit Broadway and double.

Not long after, Morneau and Grondin danced again.  And again.

First, Grondin was all in with 66 to the AK of Morneau.  Grondin was able to dodge Aces and Kings, and even a turned spade draw, to double thru.  Not long after, Morneau went big time and three-bet shipped with A 9.  Grondin called with QQ and immediately flopped a set.  Morneau would pick up a club draw on the turn, but after a spade fell, Grondin's corner erupted in some half-inhebriated chant as their girl took the chip lead.

After the hand, Grondin was up over 4 million, while Morneau fell to just 1 million and change.  There are still about 20 mins left in level 26, with 25K/50K blinds and 5K antes.

First Hand Back:

Laurence Grondin opened from the CO, and was called by Jordan Smith on the button. Almira Skripchenko was in the SB and decided to re-raise all-in. Grondin let her hand go while Smith made the call. Skripchenko looked like she was in good shape when she turned over K K , and Smith held 5 5 . Smith took the lead on the flop when it came down 5 9 6 , and Skripchenko couldn't catch up when the 8 showed up on the turn, and the Q fell on the river.

Skripchenko goes out in 7th place and will take home $78,664 in prize money.

Morneau Cripples Atchinson:

Pat Atchinson opened the action with a bet of 100K from the BB, and Joe Morneau re-raised to 265K from the SB. Atchinson 3-bet to 765K, and Morneau moved all-in over the top. Atchinson made the call as the two big stacks went at it. Atchinson had Q Q and Morneau held J J . The flop came down J Q 2 giving both players a set, but keeping Atchinson's Q's in the lead. 4 was a blank on the turn, but the case J came on the river in the form of the J , giving Morneau quads and the huge win. He is now over 4 million in chips while Atchinson slides below 400K.

Adios Atchinson:

After being crippled by Joe Morneau in the previous hand, Pat Atchinson moved all-in and was called by Laurence Grondin. Grondin flipped over A T while Atchinson had A K . The board ran out 3 8 J T 7 eliminating Atchinson in 6th place. He will take home $95,631 for his efforts.

Just Before The Break:

Andrew Seden was eliminated just before the players broke for dinner. He decided to move all-in after a raise from Jordan Smith in the CO position. Seden showed K J while Smith held A 6 . Both hit the flop of A K 8 with Smith getting the best of it. Seden couldn't catch up on the turn (7 ) or the river (Q ) and he was sent for an extra long dinner break.

The players are just about to return from their dinner break to continue their quest for the bracelet.

Would Sammy Be Proud?:

Almira Kripchenko opened from middle position, and Pat Atchinson called. After the flop came down 6 4 5 , Kripchenko bet again, and was called again by Atchinson. 4 showed up on the turn, and it went check check. 2 dropped on the river and Kripchenko check-called a bet from Atchinson. Atchinson turned over 5 5 showing his 5's full of 4's, while Kripchenko's pocket Q's went into the muck.

Up And Down For Plens:

First, Jonathon Plens called a re-raise from Joe Morneau following an opening bet from Anthony Roux. Roux got out of the way and Morneau and Plens would go to the flop. Morneau checked the flop of J Q 6 , and Plens tossed in a bet that was called. 4 on the turn and Morneau check-called an all-in bet from Plens. Plens flipped over A A while Morneau showed 6 6 . Morneau dodged an A on the river when it came J , and dealt a crushing blow to Plens.

Shortly after, Plens was able to double-up through Morneau after Morneau raised pre-flop, and Plens moved all-in over the top. Morneau called and showed 8 6 , while Plens held A K . The board ran out A J 3 T 7 to give Plens the win and the much needed double-up.

Not long after, Plens hit the rail. Looking at a raise from Joe Morneau in the CO position, Jonathon Plens decided to move all-in, and Morneau called putting Plens at risk. Plens was holding J 8 , and Morneau had A 7 . The cards fell for Morneau as it they came out 7 T K 5 6 . Plens was eliminated in 9th place and will take home $61,081 in prize money.

She's Got Muscle:

Anthony Roux opened from middle position, and Laurence Grondin raised from the SB. Roux made the call and the two went to the flop. It came down T 6 9 , and Grondin bet. Roux siomply looked at his cards and tossed them into the muck.

The Other Woman:

Almira Skripchenko raised from middle position, and moved all-in after a re-raise from Andrew Seden. Seden made the call holding T T and was in trouble against the Q Q of Skripchenko. The board rolled out 2 K 7 6 9 , and Skripchenko's Q's were good. With her double-up she now has over 1 million in chips.

The Table Is Set:

Warren Woodall was eliminated in 10th place after moving all-in with K J , and being called by Jonathon Plens who held A A . Plens' A's stayed good as the board ran out 9 5 7 6 2 , and we now have our final 9.

The players took a short, 20 minute break after getting to the official final table.

Check Please:

An aggressive Steven Tabb moved all-in pre-flop and was called by Joe Morneau. Tabb had 9 9 while Morneau was holding A J . Tabb's 9's would stay good until the turn when Morneau would catch a J (2 8 4 J ), and when the 7 bricked on the river for Tabb, he was gone.

Making A Roux:

Jordan Smith opened for 65K from middle position, and Anthony Roux shoved all-in over the top for 561K total. Smith made the snap call holding Big Slick (A K ) and would be in a coin flip situation against the 9 9 of Roux. The coin flipped Roux's way as the board ran out J J 8 7 4 , doubling-up Roux.

Jack-Knifed:

Jack Powell opened, and was raised by Pat Atchinson from the SB. Powell wasted little time shoving the rest of his chips in, and Atchinson called for a few thousand more chips. Atchinson 4 4 was in big trouble against the A A of Powell, but a 4 in burst through the door as the flop came down 4 2 3 . Powell wasn't dead yet as he was drawing for the wheel, but the 3 on the turn closed that door and opened a window. Now Powell needed to catch an A. 2 bricked on the river though and Powell was gone. Eliminated in 11th place, he will take home $42,880 for his finish.

Another White-Out:

Johnny Neckar moved all-in from the SB, and Adam White called from the BB. White was ahead with 8 8 against the A 3 of Neckar. The cards came down T T Q 9 Q giving Neckar the win with his better kicker and 2 higher pair on the board.

Double Chen(s):

Warren Woodall raised from the CO position before Tommy Chen moved all-in from the BB. Woodall made the call and turned over A 8 . Chen was in the lead with A 9 and the board fell 5 6 5 J 3 . Chen's 9 was ggod enough to beat Woodall's 8, and he was able to double-up.

Neckar Nixed:

After Jordan Smith opened, Johnny Neckar re-raised all-in. Smith called and had Neckar's J J dominated with his K K . Neckar couldn't get any help from the board as it ran out K 2 4 T 7 . Neckar goes out in 14th place and will receive $30,016.

Cowboy And Ladies:

Anthony Roux opened from middle position, and Pat Atchinson called. Steven Tabb re-raised from the BB, and Roux moved all-in over the top. Atchinson let his hand go, and after tanking for a long time, Tabb decided to call. Tabb turned over K Q , and saw he was in trouble against the Q Q of Roux. No K would come for Tabb as the board came out 3 J 4 T 6 , and Roux would get the double-up.

The Growth Of Grondin:

After action had folded to her, Laurence Grondin shoved all-in, and Steven Tabb called holding 9 9 . Grondin held A 2 . The cards were kind to Grondin as they came down A Q J 2 4 giveng her A's up, and the win.

Chen Eliminated:

Tommy Chen moved all-in pre-flop from the SB, and Jonathon Plens called from the BB. Chen held J 9 , while Plens had A 2 . Chen looked good after the first four came down 5 9 7 6 , but the A fell on the river, and he was sent to the rail in 13th place.

Day 3 of the 2K NLHE Event just got under way, and the final 16 players are gearing up to make a run for the final table.

Fade To White:

Andrew White was in the CO position, and he raised it up to 36K. Jordan Smith bumped it up to 100K on the button. White moved all-in over the top, and Smith called and showed A A . White was holding 7 8 . The board ran out 2 4 4 T 5 , and we've had our first elimination of the day. White will take home $21,008 for his 17th place finish.

A Lump Of Cole:

We've lost another player. Andrew Seden raised from early position, Corwin Cole re-raised, and Seden moved all-in. Cole made the call holding J J and was at risk against Seden's A A . No help would come to Cole as the board came down K 7 3 7 3 . Cole was eliminated in 16th place and will take home $21,008 in prize money.

Day 1 began with 1,695 starters in the latest $2,000 No Limit Hold'em venture. After two full days on the felt, just 17 of those remain. While many of the big names fell by the wayside, two tables of dreamers are hoping to make a name for themselves. Laurence Grondin and Almira Scripcenko each have a chance to be the first female to grab an open bracelet since Katja Thater in 2007. Can the girls outclass the boys? Tune in today at 1 p.m. PDT to find out.
