2009 World Series of Poker - Event #35 - Pot-Limit Omaha $5,000 - Final

Champ Richard Austin
The tournament ended in an unbelievable blaze of glory.  Richard Austin limped from the button and Sorel Mizzi limped from the Small Blind.  Cliff Josephy raised 150K from the Big Blind.  Austin called and Mizzi reraised to 750K.  Josephy saw an opportunity to move all-in and did for his last 195K.  Austin somehow calls again.  Mizzi wanted to reraised, but the maximum number of raises had been surpassed.  So Mizzi called and had to wait until the flop to go all-in, and that’s what he did.  He moved 680K in on the Flop and again Austin called.  The Flop was K 9 3 .

Mizzi: A A 5 3
Josephy: K K A 8
Austin:  Q J 8 5

On the Flop Mizzi had Aces and  Josephy had made a set of Kings.  Austin had only a flush draw and an inside straight draw.   The Turn was the 8 , which didn’t help anyone.  The River was the 7 , giving Austin the winning flush and the WSOP bracelet.  Josephy was eliminated in 3rd place and Mizzi’s, with the larger stack of the two at the beginning of the hand, took 2nd place

Sorel Mizzi has been chipping up through Cliff Josephy after the table got down to three-handed play.

First, Mizzi check-raised Josephy from the small blind against Josephy's big blind flop bet. The board was 9h 6c 4d and Josephy couldn't beat anything Mizzi was representing, so he folded away over 400,000 of his chips.

Mizzi then turned a boat to take more chips away from JohnnyBax.

Richard Austin has been content to let the two duke it out.

Cliff Josephy jumped out of the tank with the wrong answer.

On a board of A  8  6  6  Q , Josephy check-called a 220,000 chip bet from Richard Austin after a short tank. Austin showed 7  7  6  5  for trip Sixes and picked up the pot.

Felipe Ramos was eliminated in 6th place after a lull in the action.

Sorel Mizzi raised to 100,000 and Ramos shipped his stack in when the action got to him. Mizzi called and the hands were turned up.

Mizzi: A  J  9  7
Ramos: A  A  T  6

Ramos was ahead going to the flop, which came T  4  2 , kept him there. The turn was the 8 , however, giving Mizzi a wrap, and the J  on the end got Mizzi there. Ramos was stunned and left to pick up his $67,663 paycheck.

Rifat Palevic and Dan Hindin have both left the building.

Palevic opened for the pot and Sorel Mizzi re-potted him. Palevic called with A  9  8  2 , while Mizzi had A  Q  Q  3 .

The board ran out 4  3  2  A  J  and Mizzi's Aces and Threes barely showed Palevic's Aces and Deuces the door. Palevic collected $86,516 on the way out, while Mizzi continued to increase his stack.

Hindin got it all in preflop against Richard Austin shortly after Palevic exited.

Hindin: K  K  Q  7
Austin: A  A  K  8

Q  6  6  T  7  was essentially blank as Austin's Aces held off Hindin's Kings. Hindin got a pay raise for his trouble, taking down $116,748.

Nothing big has happened since the last bustout. There have been a few flops seen, but mostly whoever fires out or puts in a big raise wins.

Sorel Mizzi just scored a big pot against Rifat Palevic. Palevic limped from the small blind and Mizzi checked in the big blind. A  T  9  arrived and Palevic led for 40,000. Mizzi called. 7  came on the turn and Palevic checked. Mizzi loaded up 115,000 and fired. Palevic called.

4  was the river and Palevic again knuckled. Mizzi bet the pot of 300,000 and Palevic thought long before making the call. Mizzi tabled J  8  5  5  for a straight and Palevic threw his hand in the muck. Mizzi is up to 1,300,000 while Palevic is all the way down to 120,000.

Van Marcus is a goner.

It took two shots to off him, but Dan Hindin scored first, finding a club flush on the river against Marcus' set of Queens. Hindin doubled up to 900,000 on that hand.

The second came at the hands of Cliff Josephy. JohnnyBax got all in with Marcus preflop and the hands were:

Josephy: A  A  9  3
Marcus: K  K  T  4

The board came 8  8  5  2  A  and Van Marcus went, taking him $55,687 for his efforts.

It's break time once again. Be back in 20.

Play has been cautious here unless two big hands run into each other.

Samuel Ngai ran his Kings and connected cards into Aces preflop against Van Marcus and was unable to catch up.

Ngai: K  K  Q  T
Marcus: A  A  7  6

J  8  2  J  J  was no help for Ngai, who was eliminated in 9th place.

Peter Jetten was next to go. He and Richard Austin got involved in a pot with a board reading K  8  5  T . They got it all in on the turn with these hands:

Jetten: A  J  T  4
Austin: T  T  9  8

The river brought the 9h, missing Jetten's flush draw and straight draw and sending him to the rail in 8th place.

Play has been on pause since Isaac Baron went out in 10th. Richard Austin got all in with Baron preflop, tabling K  K  9  6 . Baron had A  Jh Td 8h.

The board brought K  Q  4  and a ton of draws for Baron, but the 8 and Q  crashed his party and Baron ducked out the back door, collecting $32,330 on the way.

The reason the action has stopped is that ESPN is scheduled to televise the official final table starting at 3 p.m, so the final nine have been on an unscheduled break since then.

The final day of this Pot-Limit Omaha tournament has a palpable air of excitement as the final table is right around the corner. Pots promise to be bloated as big hands collide.

Jeppe Nielsen was just knocked out in 11th place. He raised to 70,000 in the cut off with blinds of 10,000/20,000 and was raised all in by Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy in the small blind. Isaac Baron folded in the big blind and Nielsen called for his tournament life.

Josephy: A  A  K  3
Nielsen: A  K  3  2

T  T  8  5  9  rolled off the deck and Nielsen was gone after receiving no help. Play was held up for a bit as the yellow 1,000 chips were colored up and the players redrew seats for the final 10 table. With one more elimination we will reach the official final table. Here are the new seating arrangements:

Seat 1: Felipe Ramos
Seat 2: Cliff Josephy
Seat 3: Richard Austin
Seat 4: Rifat Palevic
Seat 5: Sorel Mizzi
Seat 6: Dan Hindin
Seat 7: Van Marcus
Seat 8: Samuel Ngai
Seat 9: Isaac Baron
Seat 10: Peter Jetten
