2009 World Series of Poker - Event #28 - No-Limit Hold’em $1,500 - Final
Tuesday, 16th of June 2009 01:00 AM (Elissa Harwood reporting) Mike Eise is the Rio’s newest bracelet winner, picking up the gold and the cash after three long days of poker. Eise hit two lucky rivers to survive during the final table and two lucky turns to eliminate his last two opponents. Eise gets $639,331 and a bracelet for his first WSOP cash.
After being the overwhelming chip leader for much of the final table, Rico Ramirez was eliminated in 3rd place. He doubled Mike Eise early in three-handed play to give up the chip lead, and then Ramirez continued to slide. In his final hand, Eise raised to 300,000, and Ramirez called from the big blind. They checked the K J J flop, and 9 peeled off on the turn. Rico bet out 725,000, and Eise moved all in. Ramirez called all in, sure that his J4 was good. But Eise tabled 99 for the turned full house. Ouch. The Ten on the river wasn’t what Rico needed to stay alive, and he went home in 3rd with a very nice $261,963 consolation prize.
When they began heads-up play, Eise had a nearly 5:1 chip lead on Jeff Chang. Chang won a few small pots but couldn’t get anything big going. Eise min-raised him, and he called to see a 6 3 3 flop. Jeff checked, and when Eise shoved, he called quickly. Chang’s AJ was ahead of Mike’s 87, but the 7 on the turn changed that. To hysteria from the rail, the dealer laid the 5 on the river, ending the match and shipping the bracelet to an elated Eise. Chang handled the beat with dignity, shaking hands and quietly leaving to pick up $392,494 for second place. Tuesday, 16th of June 2009 12:00 AM (Elissa Harwood reporting) The rail is so much quieter and less well-distinguished now that Jason Potter has been eliminated. He open-shoved the button for nearly a million, and Jeff Chang called in the BB. Potter’s Q T was in bad shape against Chang’s T T , but Potter’s railbirds were thrilled to see a Queen in the door. Until they saw the rest of the Q T 4 flop. The A on the turn brought more screaming as JP_OSU picked up a flush draw. But the 7 on the river left them booing and sent Potter on his way in 4th place. Jason earns $185,444 and some live cred to go along with his online reputation. Rico Ramirez took down a nice pot with a 1.5 million bet on the flop. The hand put him over the 7 million mark. The players took a 20-minute break and were just starting Level 29 (blinds at 50,000/100,000 with a 10,000 ante) when Ramirez made it 500,000 to go. Mike Eise moved all in on top for another 2 million. Ramirez put more thought into the decision than all of his other calls combined, but eventually called with A8. Eise was ahead with A9 and held up to win the enormous pot. Eise is the new chip leader with 5.1 million, and Ramirez is down to 4.5 million. Jeff Chang is hanging in there with 2.1 million. Monday, 15th of June 2009 11:00 PM (Elissa Harwood reporting) Barry Berger doubled up again when his Jacks held against Mike Eise’s pocket ducks. After the hand, Berger was over a million in chips for the first time in the tournament. But Barry didn’t hold on to his chips for very long. It folded to him the cutoff, and he raised to 215,000. Rico Ramirez called from the blinds to see the Q Mike Eise was down to 425,000 when it folded to him on the button and shoved with pocket 6s. Jeff Chang called with A3. The flop came 4 2 2, giving Chang a wheel draw to go with his Ace outs. And the rail started to rumble when the 5 peeled off on the turn to make Chang’s straight. But the noise was nothing compared to the explosion that happened when the 2 on the river gave Eise a boat. His deuces full was good for the pot, keeping him alive and doubling him to 940,000. Eise got it all in again a few minutes later with Q9 against Chang’s A6. The J 8 4 flop was no help to Eise, and the 7 on the turn was a brick as well. But a 9 on the river saved him once again, giving him close to 1.5 million. Monday, 15th of June 2009 10:00 PM (Elissa Harwood reporting) The cards have only been in the air for about 20 minutes since dinner, but there’s been plenty of all in action. With blinds at 30K/60K and a 5K ante, the short stacks are feeling the pressure. Jeff Chang got it all in quickly with Q A few hands later, Chang raised UTG to 180,000, and Zack Fritz moved in for 815,000 total. It folded around to BB Mike Eise, who surprised everyone with a quick call. Chang moved all in on top, and Eise called his shove as well. Chang tabled KK, Fritz AK, and Eise AQ. The Ten-high board didn’t change anything, and Chang tripled up with his pocket cowboys. He left for dinner as one of the short stacks with 590,000. Now Chang is second in chips with 2.7 million. Zack Fritz was eliminated in 6th place, with comes with $111,266. This is Zack’s 6th WSOP cash and his deepest finish by far. Barry Berger was down to 320,000 after paying his big blind, and when Rico Ramirez raised, Berger pushed in the rest of his chips. Ramirez called with AJ. Berger’s T8 was behind, but with two live cards, anything can happen. A then on the flop gave Barry the lead, and the pair was good to double him to 695,000. The hand didn’t hurt Ramirez too much. He’s still in the lead with 4,175,000. Monday, 15th of June 2009 09:00 PM (Elissa Harwood reporting) The final table is off at dinner, but only six players will return. Not too long before the break, Jose Luis Franco was eliminated in 8th place. Rico Ramirez open-raised (pretty standard by now) to 125,000, and Franco moved in for all of his 600,000. Ramirez called to see that his A J was far out in front of Franco’s A 3 . Ramirez picked up a flush draw on the K T 9 flop, but the J on the turn took away the 3s as outs. The 7 on the river spelled the end for Franco, who earns $83,180 for 8th place.
Only a few hands after Franco’s departure, Mike Eise raised to 150,000 UTG, and both blinds paid to see the A
The final six will be back from dinner around 9:30. Here are the break time chip counts: Rico Ramirez 4,350,000Mike Eise 3,370,000 Jason Potter 1,905,000 Zack Fritz 1,085,000 Jeff Chang 590,000 Barry Berger 450,000 Monday, 15th of June 2009 08:00 PM (Kaelaine Minton reporting) With just nine players remaining, they seem to have settled in for a long night. In a battle of the blinds and a battle of the Mikes: Mike Sulker (small) raised to 125k and Mike Eise called from the big. The flop came K 7 7 giving both players Kings-up and Mike's kicker was still good. Turn was a 6 and gave Jason more outs with the back-door flush draw. Rico Ramirez opened for 275k, then big-stack Mike Eise shoved for ~4 million. Rico wasted no time calling all-in, showing pocket Queens. Mike held AK off and it was race-time. Everyone else got out of the way and Eise chipped up to almost 2 million. On a flop of K J 3 raibow, Mike Eise checked, Jeff Chang bet 300k, and Mike Eise min-raised to 600k. Jeff tanked for a while, then let it go. Mike Eise picked up another pot. He's now sitting behind about 2.5 million. Joey Barttole opened for 250k up front and Luis Franco shoved for just under 400k. Joey called, showing pocket Queens. Luis held A9 suited and was way behind. Then the board came 7 6 5 A 6 and Luis paired his Ace to double up. Joey was left short with ~120k and was in the big blind on the next hand.
