2009 World Series of Poker - Event #24 - No-Limit Hold’em $1,500 - Final

Sunday, 14th of June 2009 12:00 AM

(Aaron Angerman reporting)

Champ Panayote 'Pete' Vilandos
Panayote 'Pete' Vilandos is the latest $1,500 No Limit champion.  Vilandos will pocket $607,256 and the gold bracelet, which is the second of his career.

After seeing the first few pots shipped across the table to Andy Seth, Vilandos crippled the kid.

A series of preflop raises saw Seth run his AQ into the AK of Vilandos.  After the hand, Seth held  chips and was in danger of coming up a spot short of the bracelet.  Vilandos now held about 9 million of the more than 11 million chips in play.

After Vilandos limped a couple buttons, Seth decided to raise one up.  Vilandos then came over the top and Seth snapped for the rest of his chips.  When the cards were turned, Seth's AQ was dominating the A5 of Vilandos, but after picking up a gutshot on the 8 4 3 flop, Vilandos spiked a deuce on the turn to make the wheel.  After fading a chop on the river, Vilandos straight had earned him a bracelet.

Andy 'BKiCe' Seth is the Event #24 runner-up, earning $372,855.

Vilandos, who entered this final table with $1 million in career earnings already, grabbed his first bracelet in 2005 by topping 263 others in a $1,500 Pot Limit Hold'em tourney.  Congrats, Pete.

Time for heads-up.  It all started with Glenn McCaffrey exiting in 4th in very peculiar fashion.

Down to about 1 million chips, McCaffrey put all but 150K of those in the middle preflop.  Andy Seth made the call and turned over A Q, apparrently thinking McCaffrey was all in.  He wasn't, and after seeing Seth flopped a diamond draw, McCaffrey said he was behind, and mucked rather than commit his last 150K.

McCaffrey would then triple up after Greco and Vilandos checked it down to let him find a four-flush.  But the four-flush would then become McCaffrey's enemy.

A few minutes later, McCaffrey shipped with AJ and got looked up by Seth, who held A 7.  The board brought four diamonds, and with McCaffrey's hand bling-less, Seth's 7 was enough to rid the table of McCaffrey.

Glenn McCaffrey is out in 4th, earning $176,165.

The final three took a short break, Vilandos holding 5 million chips to Seth's 3.5 million and Greco's 1.25 million.  But on the first hand after break, Greco shipped it with AT.  He was looked up by the 77 of Seth.  After the race, Seth's sevens had outran the overs of Greco, clearing the table for heads-up.

Mike Greco is out in 3rd-place, earning $248,855.

Andy Seth has a slight chip lead entering heads-up, his 5.8 million to Vilados' 5.3 million.  Blinds are about to go up to 50K/100K with 10K antes.

Players returned from a 20 minute break and got right back to action.  Already, they are two players lighter.

With level 27 blinds at 30K/60K, plus 5K antes, Alan Jaffray made the huge shove for just under 1 million chips.  The odd hatted one was looked up by Pete Vilandos, who was next to act and woke up with AQ.  Jaffray tabled KQ and was in bad shape.  Each would make queens and threes by the river, but Jaffray never overcame the kicker probs and has been bounced.

Alan Jaffray will take home $105,699 for leaving in 6th.

Vilandos was up over 4 million after the hand and is the overwhelming chip leader.  But he would soon give up some of those to Marc Greco.

Greco put in an almost min-raise to 130K and Vilandos came along from the BB.  K 9 3 on the flop and Vilandos check-called 200K from Greco.  After another 9 turned, Vilandos chose to check-raise, putting Greco at a decision for the rest of his stack.  After pacing around the table, Greco would return to call with AA, ahead of the KT of Vilandos.  The river would brick off a deuce, doubling Greco up to more than 2 million.

Even after the hit, Vilandos remains the table aggressor.  He holds more than 3 million chips, with Greco, Seth and McCaffrey each hovering around 2 million.  Dean Hamrick was the short-stack, holding onto about 1.5 million...

Then Hamrick tangled with Vilandos.

Hamrick raised up Vilandos' BB.  He didn't like it much and shipped it into Hamrick.  Hamrick called off his last million with AQ.  Vilandos turned over 99.  Vilados would fill up after the board ran out 7 T T 9 7 and Hamrick, who finished 10th in last year's Main Event, won't pick up his first bracelet today.

Dean Hamrick is out in 5th-place, good for a $132,380 payday.

Down to a half dozen.  Not long after the Greco double ups, Ronnie Kevin had his stack on the line.

Andy Seth opened the pot by sliding out 115K.  Pete Vilandos then came over the top, making it 300K.  And before Seth got a chance to act, Kevin moved all in.  Vilandos made the call with KK.  Kevin tabled AQ and after the dealer tossed out five baby cards on the felt, Kevin was rail-bound.

Ronnie Kevin is out in 8th-place and will take home $79,017.

Vilandos would flash pocket aces after taking down another pot.  He was up to almost 2.5 million after the hand, which was good for the chip lead.

David Lerman would soon follow Kevin to the rail.

Both Lerman and Alan Jaffray would call a Glenn McCaffrey pre-flop raise.  T 4 3 on the flop and Lerman shoves his last 400K in the middle.  McCaffrey was right behind to call with KT.   Lerman could only muster 94 for mid pair.  The K on the turn improved McCaffrey to top two, leaving Lerman searching for a 4 and only a 4.  But the river ace put Lerman away.

David Lerman finishes in 7th-place, earning $88,937.

Play returned to the raise/fold, bet/fold mode of play. Very few hands were reaching showdown, and the ones that did were checked down.

There was a short break for the camera crew, then they resumed play. Here are the chip counts as of the break:

SeatPlayerChips
7Andy Seth 2,770,000
4Glenn McCaffrey 1,900,000
9Panayote 'Pete' Vilandos 1,490,000
3Dean Hamrick 1,450,000
8Alan Jaffray 1,200,000
2Ronnie Kevin 670,000
1David Lerman 625,000
5Michael Greco 400,000
6Brian Fitzpatrick 390,000
Total chips in play11,277,000
Players remaining9
Average stack1,253,000

That break seemed to jolt them into action.

Brian Fitzpatrick moved in and got the look-see from Pete Vilandos, who held AT off. Brian's A8 off was dominated. The board came T 7 2 J 3 and Brian was busted.

Brian Fitzpatrick finished in 9th place, earning $73,886.

Dean Hamrick made it 130k to play and Glenn McCaffrey flatted, then Michael Greco moved in for ~390k. Dean opted out, but Glenn made the call, showing pocket Tens. Michael held AQ offsuit and needed to improve to survive. He did, when the board came J 8 5 Q 8 and Michael doubled up to ~1 million.

On the turn with a board of 9 8 6 8, Michael got all-in again, this time against Andy Seth, who held pocket Queens. Michael was out in front, holding A8 suited for trip 8s. River was another 9 giving Michael the full house and yet another double-up, to almost 2 million.

8 players remain.

They took a short break at the end of level 24, then play resumed with

Level 25: Blinds 20k/40k with 5k antes.

After an opening raise, David Lerman moved in from the big blind. Brian Fitzpatrick made the call, showing A3 suited. David held AJ offsuit and the lead. The board came 8 8 2 T 4 and David's kicker played to double him up.

Andy Seth opened for 95k up front and Dean Hamrick called to the a flop of 7 7 2. Andy led for 145k, Dean kicked it up to 335k,and Andy called. Turn was a King and they both checked. River was an 8 and they both checked. Andy rolled over pocket 6s, but Dean showed 98 suited for the rivered bigger pair to take the nice pot.

Ernst Hermans moved his last 360k all-in and got action from Ronnie Kevin in the small blind. Ernst held pocket 3s and was way behind Ronnie's pocket Kings. The flop was all blanks, but the turn was a King, sealing the deal for Ronnie.

Ernst Hermans finished in 10th place, earning $51,755.

Nine players remain, so they have finally reached the 'official final table'.

Play resumed after dinner with about 25 minutes remaining in

Level 24: Blinds 15k/30k with 4k antes.

Chip counts as of the dinner break:

SeatPlayerChips
8Andy Seth 2,290,000
9Alan Jaffray 1,946,000
4Glenn McCaffrey 1,500,000
3Dean Hamrick 1,473,000
7Brian Fitzpatrick 989,000
5Michael Greco 896,000
6Ernst Hermans 859,000
10Panayote 'Pete' Vilandos 702,000

1David Lerman 276,000
Total chips in play11,277,000
Players remaining10
Average stack1,127,700

More inaction that action after the dinner break. Players seemed a bit sluggish getting back to the business at hand. Most hands have been resolved pre-flop with a single raise or three-bet.

Short-stack David Lerman moved all-in once, but got no takers.

(Kaelaine Minton reporting)

Still on dinner break. Play will resume at about 5:30pm.

Saturday, 13th of June 2009 04:00 PM

(Kaelaine Minton reporting)

Benny Champlin open-shoved for ~320k and Glenn McCaffrey looked him up, showing pocket 8s. Glenn held AQ off and was happy when the flop came A 6 2 giving him the lead. Then the turn brough the J , which put three hearts on the board. Everyone searched for hearts and Glenn held the 8 . River was the 4 , completing the flush for Glenn and completing the tournament for Benny.

Benny Champlin finished in 11th place, earning $51,755.

With ten players remaining, they drew for seats and moved to a single table, that table being the Feature table.

Since the clock had already been stopped for the redraw, they decided to go ahead and take an early dinner break. Play will resume at about 5:30pm.

(Kaelaine Minton reporting)

After Robert Truijers opened for 73k up front, Andy Seth kicked it on up to 142k straight. Roberto tanked for a minute, then made the call. Flop came Q T 6 and Andy fired 80k. Roberto shoved and Andy called. Robert held KJ offsuit for the open-ended draw. Andy was ahead with pocket Kings, but not very comfortable with it. Then the last two came 4 6 missing all of Roberto's outs. Andy is now sitting behind about 250k.

Roberto Truijers finished in 15th place, earning $36,225.

After Mihai Manole opened up front, Michael Greco shoved from the button for ~425k. Mihai made the call all-in, showing AK off. Michael held pocket Tens and it was post-time at the races. The board ran out 9 4 2 Q 3 and Michael's pair held up.

Mihai Manole finished in 14th place, earning $36,225.

Dean Hamrick opened for 60k and Stuart Marshak shoved for 221k straight. Dean made the call, showing QJ suited. Stuart was ahead with AT offsuit, but the board came Q 7 5 5 J and Dean took the pot with two pair.

Stuart Marshak finished in 13th place, earning $36,225.

Play continued into

Level 24: Blinds 15k/30k with 4k antes.

In a battle of the blinds, Gualter Santos made it 90k to play from the small, then Alan Jaffray shoved from the big. Gualter tanked for a bit, then called all-in, showing AT suited. Alan held pocket deuces and was ahead, slightlyl. Then the board came 8 3 2 8 Q and Alan improved to ducks-full to take the pot.

Gualter Santos finished in 12th place, earning $51,755.

11 players remain. Two more to go to reach the final table.

They took a break at the end of the level, then play resumed with

Level 23: Blinds 12k/24k with 3k antes.

After Ernst Hermans opened the action, Roberto Truijers shoved for about a quarter-million. Ernst made the call, showing KQ off. Roberto was dominating him with Ak off. The board came A T 9 6 4 and Roberto doubled up.

Saturday, 13th of June 2009 02:00 PM

(Kaelaine Minton reporting)

They got the cards back in the air just a few minutes after 1pm with

Level 21: Blinds 8k/16k with 2k antes.

Chris Sparks open-shoved, then David Lerman made the over-shoved. Everyone else got out of the way and Chris showed pocket 7s. He was racing against David's AK off. The race was a short one, however, as the flop came A A K, then another King hit the turn. River was irrelevant and Chris was busted.

Chris Sparks finished in 19th place, earning $17,753.

They paused the clock as the final 18 players drew for seats and moved to the final two tables, then got back to business.

Andrew Seden moved in and got action from Ernst Hermans in the big blind, who held AQ off. Andrew was ahead with pocket Kings, but then the board came 8 8 4 A 7 and Ernst paired his Ace to take the pot.

Andrew Seden finished in 18th place, earning $25,347.

Roberto Correa got his chips in behind with A T getting action from Benny Champlin, who held A T. The flop came J 6 5 and changed nothing, then the Q came on the turn giving Roberto a lot of outs with the gutshot Royal draw, but giving Benny top pair. River was the 9 and not one of Robert's outs.

Roberto Correa finished in 17th place, earning $25,347.

16 players remain. 7 more to go to reach the final table.
