2009 World Series of Poker - Event #24 - No-Limit Hold’em $1,500 - Day 2
End of Day 2 chip counts and seating assignments:
Saturday, 13th of June 2009 03:00 AM (Aaron Angerman reporting)At 10 minutes to 3 a.m., and with about 15 minutes left in level 21, the clock was paused and players were informed there were just five more hands to play. It looks like 19 players will come back for Day 3. We have a new player atop the chip counts, in Andy Seth with about 1.2 million. Seth got there in an 'ol fashioned battle of the blinds. Sitting in the BB was then chip leader Ernst Hermans. Hermans came over the top of a Seth raise with the rest of his stack. Seth snap called with KK. Hermans tabled AcJc and by the river, Seth had made a diamond flush to double. Hermans was left with about 300K, but won a race to pump it back up over half a million. Alan Jaffray also made a late run and is up to 700K. First it was Jaffray doubling thru Brian Fitzpatrick. Jaffray made the move on the flop after picking up the nut club draw. Fitzpatrick went for the knockout, having flopped top pair of aces. Jaffray wouldn't waste any time and completed his flush on the turn to double up. A little while later, Jaffray would double again, again through Fitzpatrick. This time, Jaffray had his overpair hold up against a pair and an open-end draw. Add a few more pots, including a bust out of Roberto Morales, and Jaffray should bag about a million chips tonight. That does it for Day 2 coverage. Since they didn't get down to the final table, Saturday play will start a little early. Join us tomorrow at 1 p.m. local Vegas time as they take this $1,500 event all the way down to a winner. Saturday, 13th of June 2009 02:00 AM (Aaron Angerman reporting)Level 20 has come to an end and the final 25 players are on their last 20 min break. With the final table still a ways away, it has been ruled that they'll play until 3 a.m., then bring out the bags. Level 21 has 2K antes to go along with 8K/16K blinds. Anyone busting will now take home $17,753. Just before the break, Marty Derbyshire, Bill Wood, David Goldklang and Ryan Barwacz busted out. Derbyshire and Wood missed out on the latest pay jump and took home $14,093. Derbyshire fell at the hands of Ernst Hermans, one of the new big stacks. Derbyshire, a fellow member of the poker media, was down near 10 BB shove range and made his last move with AQ. Hermans, who opened the pot with and UTG raise, was priced in and made the call with 7c5c. The board would bring a 7, but no help for Derbyshire's AQ and he's gone in 29th. Hermans is now over 800K, with Fitzpatrick and Hamrick right there with him. Since the re-draw, Truijers has falled to 600K, which should still put him in the top five. Saturday, 13th of June 2009 01:00 AM (Aaron Angerman reporting)We've lost a few more, including Tommy Le and David "the Maven" Chicotsky. Le was short and shipped it holding A2 in the BB. He got looked up by QJ and after the board came Q-high, Nam's little bro was a goner. Chicotsky had been sitting behind a big stack all day, but went a little overboard in a pot with Alan Jaffray. Chicotsky shipped his last 200K in from the BB holding AK. But Jaffray wasn't going anywhere with his KK. The board would finish up K Q J 4 5 and Jaffray's set of cowboys sent Chicotsky to the rail. Jaffray now has 500K, which is good for 4th in the room. Truijers still holds more than 900K and the lead, while Ernst Hermans seems to have leapfrogged Fitzpatrick for 2nd. They board is showing 29 players remaining. The next pay jump will come at 27th-place, which is good for $17,753. Antes are still 1K, but blinds are up to 6K/12K now. Saturday, 13th of June 2009 12:00 AM (Aaron Angerman reporting)Players have just returned from yet another 20-min break. Dustin Dirksen got a head start on break by going broke just prior. After a couple of key double ups, Dirksen again got it in good, this time QQ to A8. But after his opponent made trip eights on the turn, Dirksen could collect $10,604 at the payouts. Truijers is on a roll, now flirting with the 1 million chip mark. Truijers' latest pot came at the expense of Chris Sparks. Truijers check-called bets with the board reading 8 6 4 Q and after a T fell on the river. In the showdown, it was Sparks tabling AQ for top-top. But Truijers tabled KK. The cowboys were good and worth a half million chip pot. Dean Hamrick is trying to keep pace, but after a short stack ran AQ into Hamrick's AK, his 500K is still only half of what Truijers has. Brian Fitzpatrick has about 700K, which is good for 3rd. Next pay jump is at 36. Reach that and earn at least a $14,093 payday. The blinds are now going up to 6,000/12,000 with 1,000 antes. Friday, 12th of June 2009 11:00 PM (Aaron Angerman reporting)Roberto Truijers is up to almost 600K now. Most of those chips came at the expense of the lovely Kara Scott. Scott got her last 140K, or so, in after the turn with an ace on the board. She picked up action from Truijers, who tabled A4. Scott showed a couple kings and would need help. After the river bricked, so did Scott's tournament hopes. Dirksen doubled again. This time he had his aces ran into by 77. The only player to improve on the board was Dirksen, who rivered a set. After the hand, Dirksen was up to 100K. After dumping off a lot of chips, Alan Jaffray is up to almost 300K. In a late pot, Jaffray saw his 40K river bet raised to 100K. Jaffray didn't wait long to make the call, his KJ having rivered top two pair. His opponent could only turn over mid-pair and Jaffray took in a big one. Craig Gray was once nearing the felt with about 50K, but seems to have doubled and was sitting behind almost 120K at the time of my last pass. Truijers and Fitpatrick each have more than 600K. If I was to guess, I would say Fitzpatrick had the slight lead. Friday, 12th of June 2009 10:00 PM (Aaron Angerman reporting)Play has slowed dramatically. There are still 65 players seated. We're halfway thru the 3,000/6,000 level. Up next is 4,000/8,000 blinds with antes doubled to 1,000. Average stacks are fairly deep, and with prize jumps starting to escalate, everyone seems to have tightened up. Finish in the top 63, earn $6,875. After that, the next jump is at 54 players, which will be good for $8,380. All chump change compared to the $600K for taking it down. Alan Jaffray can smile now. He shoved with AJ and topped KK after flopping a pair of aces to get to 160K. Dean Hamrick, who just missed out on the November Nine in last year's Main Event, took a dip from his highwater mark of 300K, only to bounce back some. Hamrick was able to take a 150K pot away from Roberto Truijers. Each would slow down as five rags fell on the board. A small bet on the river was called by Hamrick, who turned over 55. Truijers' AK was only good for overs, giving the pot to Hamrick. Truijers still has over 400K and is near the chip lead. Brian Fitzpatrick looks to have about 500K, which has got to be the big stack. Friday, 12th of June 2009 09:00 PM (Aaron Angerman reporting)Play resumed after a 20-min break. Only eight tables remain. Alan Jaffray is down to under 90K. It was checked to Jaffray on the river, but after he put a 40K bet into the 95K pot, his opponent moved all in. "Just how crafty are you, sir?" said Jaffray as he examined the 5 4 3 J T board. After a few pained minutes, Jaffray gave the pot up.Dustin Dirksen is back in business after a key double up. There was already an opening raise to 11K and a call from the button when Dirksen shipped his last 31K from the BB. The original raiser got out of the way, but the button made the call. "Show me QJ, one time," said Dirksen as he tabled KJ. His opponent turned over AdTd. But after the board ran out J 5 2 Q 8, Dirksen has paired his jack to more than double. He now has about 80K. More chip counts; Kara Scott (105K), Tommy Le (80K), Craig Gray (70K), Dean Hamrick (300K) and Marty Derbyshire (180K). Play continues in the 2,000/4,000 blind level, with 500 antes. Friday, 12th of June 2009 08:00 PM (O'Keeya Singleton reporting) Jeff Banghart was the recipient of the much sought after triple-up. Banghart raised all-in preflop. The response to that was another reraise all-in. The big stack at the table called both all-ins. The players turned over unspectacular hands. Banghart had K J . The other all-in showed Big Slick (A K ) and the big stack had K Q . The Flop came 4 J 5 , giving Banghart a pair of Jacks. The 4 on the Turn and the 9 on the River meant the Jacks held up. Banghart tripled-up and the other all-in won the side pot. At the same table a few moments later it was Chris Sparks turn. Sparks and another player called an all-in preflop reraise. The Flop came 2 5 6 . Sparks then moved all-in and was called. So with two players all-in Sparks turned over his pocket Aces (A A ). The original all in player showed A Q and Sparks’ caller showed pocket Eights (8 8 ). “Hold up one time,” screamed Sparks. The Turn was a safe J and the River was a brick 4 . Sparks was somewhere between doubled and tripled-up.Friday, 12th of June 2009 07:00 PM (O'Keeya Singleton reporting) Just before the dinner break, Joe “Joebok” Sebok found himself on the edge of elimination. Sebok pushed all-in before the Flop with Q J . He was called by a player with A Q . The Flop was 4 2 3 . Sebok didn’t connect at all and was drawing to the three Jacks left in the deck. No Jack on the Turn, instead it was the T . No Jack on the River, as the 4 ended Joebok’s tournament.Players went on a 60 minute dinner break. Friday, 12th of June 2009 06:00 PM (O'Keeya Singleton reporting) Darryll Fish, who has one of the most unfortunate names in poker (for a good player) called an all-in raise for 111K from a player across the table. Fish showed A 9 and was up against a pair of black Jacks. The Flop came 4 3 5 . The Jacks were still ahead. The Turn was the 5 . The River was the T and Fish was counting out chips to ship.Dragan Galic let me know earlier he is from Croatia not Hungary. Galic put in a reraise preflop and was called. The Flop was 8 8 9 . The other player made it 8K to Galic on the Flop and Galic called. Both players checked the A on the Turn. The 9 came on the River and it was checked to Galic who put in a 20K bet. That bet went uncalled and Galic took scooped. Galic is sitting next to online player of the year David “The Maven” Chicotsky. Chicotsky revealed to me he was up 125K in chips and "Hi, Mom". Friday, 12th of June 2009 05:00 PM (O'Keeya Singleton reporting) Joe “Joebok” Sebok was able to double-up again. He moved all-in before the Flop and was called by a player with A 3 . Sebok showed his A Q . The Flop came 2 7 T . Not much there. The Turn was the 4 , yet another blank. The River brought the 7 . The other player said, “we both have a pair of Sevens!" But Sebok’s kicker played, so he scooped the whole pot and stayed alive. Just as that hand completed, Sebok met his new neighbor chip leader Glenn McCaffrey.I think it’s a bit chilly in the Amazon room today, apparently tournament player Christopher Goo disagrees. He’s chosen to ventilate his shirt by opening most of the buttons. Goo raised all-in and was called preflop. Goo showed unsuited A 5 . He was thinking of where he was going to have dinner tonight after his opponent showed A Q . That’s basically a three-outer, people. The Flop was a heart stopping 4 5 A . Goo had made Aces up and reversed roles leaving his opponent with only three outs. The Turn was the 7 . No help. The 9 River meant Goo had doubled-up.Friday, 12th of June 2009 04:00 PM (O'Keeya Singleton reporting) Alan Jaffray, known for wearing oversized women’s hats at his final tables, just picked up some chips. The Flop was 5 6 J . Jaffray went all-in and picked up a call from the other side of the table. Jaffray showed J9 and the other player had pocket Eights. The Eights were drawing to two outs. Neither the Turn K nor the River T were one of them. One more player was out and Jaffray was climbing the leader board. Joe Sebok moved all-in preflop and picked up a caller. Sebok flipped over K Q and was surprised to see 8 7 on the other side. The Flop was Q 4 9 . Sebok paired Queens and the other player picked up a backdoor straight draw. That straight draw petered out when the 3 appeared on the Turn. The 4 on the River gave Sebok Queens-up for the double up.Friday, 12th of June 2009 03:00 PM (O'Keeya Singleton reporting) Today’s action in the $1500 NLH Event #24 has begun. Peter Rho, who placed 2nd in Event #11 ($2,000 NLH), is started the day sitting at the same table as tournament chip leader Glenn McCaffrey. For McCaffrey, the rich just get richer. He bet out 2,400 on a 9 8 6 Flop. Pedro Mezza called. The Turn is the 2 . McCaffrey bets and Mezza pushed all-in. McCaffrey called and showed his Queens. Mezza’s pocket Threes (3 3 ) were way behind. The 5 on the River sent Mezza packing and had McCaffrey stacking new chips.Across the room three players made it to the flop which came J 6 9 . John Nepoli moved all-in. Oliver Busquet and the other player in the hand called. Nepoli had mad a flush on the Flop with K 5 . Busquet showed a pair of Tens (T T ) and the other player showed pocket Eights. The 2 on the Turn and 5 on the River didn’t change the standings. Nepoli doubled-up and Busquet took a hit to his stack. The other player was out on the rail. After just over 10 levels bellied up to the tables in Event #24, they are already in the money. The final 270 players in this $1,500 No Limit Hold'em tournament each bagged their Day 1 chips knowing they have guaranteed themselves at least a $2,668 payday. Who will move up the prize list on Day 2 to grab a seat at the final table? Tune in Friday at 2 p.m. Las Vegas time for LIVE updates from the felt.
