2009 World Series of Poker - Event #11 - No-Limit Hold’em $2,000 - Final

Sunday, 07th of June 2009 02:00 AM

(O'Keeya Singleton reporting)

Champ Anthony Harb

Anthony Harb wins the $569,199 first place prize.  The board was 9 8 K J .  Peter Rho pronounced he was all-in after slow playing the river.  Harb made a quick call.  Rho showed 9 8 and Harb had the Q T .  Harb had made the straight, and Rho's two pair were drawing slim on the river.  The 4 on the river ended 3 long days of poker.

Peter Rho takes down second place and $350,019 for his efforts. Rho was a tough opponent for Harb but was unable to find the right combination of agression and luck.

Jim Geary has been trying to get his stack in the middle when he has the best of it.  Perhaps, once too often, because he was finally called by Anthony Harb.  It was blind vs. blind with Geary in the Small Blind going all-in. Harb called and showed Big Slick (A K ). Geary only had  A 8 .  Geary needed a lot of help.  The flop came 5 J 4 with no help for Geary.  With the 4 on the Turn and T on the River it was time for Geary to head over and collect his winnings.

(O'Keeya Singleton reporting)

Jim Geary has been the short stack for a while, but he has been able to avoid elimination so far.  He has been consistently collecting blinds and ante with his uncalled preflop raises and reraises.

All three players saw the flop when it came 7 5 8 .  No action until the Turn 9 inspired Anthony Harb to bet out 150K. The bet forced out Peter Rho, but got a call from Jim Geary.  The River was the 9 .  Geary pushed 200K to the center and Rho called.  Geary turned over 98 offsuit for the full boat (Nines over Eights).  Rho didn't show, but looked frustrated.  Action has slowed to a snail's place.

The hour ended with players negotiating the break time.  They settle on 15 minutes.  Maybe a quick catnap will invigorate the action.

Adam Adler has been eliminated.  Anthony Harb and Adler got into a reraise war that ended in Harb reraising Adler all-in.   Adler called and turned over K Q .  Harb had A Q .  The board came 7 5 8 with neither player connecting. The Flop  3 and River  7 were both bricks and Adler finished in 4th place.

Jim Geary and Peter Rho, neither showing aggression, limped and check the hand down to the Turn.  The board read A T Q Q .  T came on the River and Ro bet 320K and picked up a call from Geary. Rho showed Q J for  Queens full of Tens.  Perhaps Geary has an Ace or Ten, but he mucked his hand, so we'll never know.

(O'Keeya Singleton reporting)

Players have returned from the dinner break.  Jim Geary is making a deliberate effort to play aggressively.  In one of the first hands back, Geary raised from the button.   Anthony Harb called from the Small Blind and Peter Rho folded his Big Blind.  The Flop was 3 5 K .  Harb checked and Geary bet 200K.   Harb called.  Both players checked the turn (J )  and the river (9 ).  Harb's 6 5 beat Geary's A 3 with a pair of Fives.

In another hand Adam Adler raised from the button and Geary reraised all-in from the Small Blind.  Adler thinks and calls another 550K.  Geary shows KJ offsuit and Adler has A 6 .  The board comes 3 5 K   Q   7 .  Both players hit the flop, but Geary connected with his Cowboy and rode it to the river for the double up.

They are dropping like flies...

Scott Hall has been eliminated in 7th place.  Peter Rho raised to 105k in the cutoff and it folded around to Scott Hall who was in the big blind.  Scott raised to 360k, and Peter came over the top for 1.5 million.  Scott moved for the rest of his stack.  Peter turned over A K while Peter had pocket queens for the classic coin flip.  Peter is lucky enough not to sweat the whole deal as 4  3  Q  3  T .  Peter Rho now has 3.8 million in chips.

Adrian Dresel-Valeasquez was eliminated in 6th place.  He was the short stack and moved in with Q  K  against Adam Adler’s call with pocket tens.  The board completely missed Dresel-Velasquez making him $92,867 richer.

The entertainment at the table has also been eliminated.  Jonathan “Walk it out” McGowan had been playing great short stacked poker all day.  He saw his chance to double up with pocket queens and moved his stack.  Unfortunately for Jonathan, Anthony Harb woke up with pocket kings.  The board flowed   J  7  J  5  which did Jonathan no good.

Even though Jonathan “Walk it out” McGowan is gone the excitement doesn’t stop.  Jim Geary just moved in with K  9  for his remaining 570k.  Anthony Harb insta called him with dominating pocket nines.  The board came 3  5  K  delivering Jim’s three outer.  The turn was the T .  Anthony was drawing dead and passed his chips to Jim for a double up.

Michael Dyer was once the chip leader at the final table, but recently his stack has fluctuated in a negative way.  He was trying to make a move and pushed all in, but he wasn’t happy when Scott Hall called.  Michael showed A  5 , and Scott felt fairly confident with A  K .  The board came 3  T  3  T  K .  Michael Dyer is our 8th place finisher.

Since Dyer got knocked out there hasn’t been much post flop action.  Adam Adler got a walk in the big blind and showed pocket aces.  That is as devastating as a bad beat.  Jim Geary also got a walk and showed pocket jacks.  Ouch!

Jonathan McGowan is probably the most talkative and animated player on the table.  He raised to 75k preflop, and Michael Dyer in the big blind called.  The flop came 4  9  K .  Both players checked.  The turn was a 9 .  Michael checked raised Jonathan 110k bet.  Jonathan quickly folded.

Brent Sheribon was eliminated in 9th place.  He shoved for 400k with 3  3 , but he ran into Anthony Harb who had A  A .  The board ran out 8  3  Q  2 .  When the third heart fell the crowd went wild at the excitement of pocket threes flushing to bust aces.  However, Harb’s A A held strong  when the J  hit the river.

Players are now on a 20 minute break.  The 1,000 chips are being colored up and taken out of play.

The final table started promptly, and at 4:05 cards were in the air.  Here is the seating arrangement for the final 10 players:

Seat 1: Mike Carlson  - 721,000
Seat 2: Jim Geary – 794,000
Seat 3: Scott Hall – 496,000
Seat 4: Brent Sheirbon – 630,000
Seat 5: Adrian Dresel-Velasquez – 826,000
Seat 6: Jonathan McGowan – 509,000
Seat 7: Anthony Harb – 1,537,000
Seat 8: Peter Rho – 1,465,000
Seat 9: Adam Adler – 1,066,000
Seat 10: Michael Dyer – 1,839,000

For the first several hands players demonstrated their dominance and chips were rewarded to the raiser.  At 4:17 the first flop of the final table was seen between Jonathan McGowan and Anthony Harb.  The board came 6  Q  K  7 .  Jonathan bet the flop and turn, and Anthony called.  The river was a 5 .  Jonathan took a few moments to decide what he was going to do; he went all in for 445k more.  Anthony ended up folding.

Mike Carlson would be the first one to leave the final table.  Mike raised, and Peter Rho smooth called from the small blind.  The flop came 4  A  J  which Peter checked.  Mike sensing weakness moved all in for 742k.  Peter made the call and turned over pocket jacks for a set against Mike’s K  8 .  Mike needed a spaid to survive.  The turn was a 6  and the river was an A .

Players are now nine handed…

Right after doubling up, David Mandt had about 500k in front and pushed with A  K .  He was was called by Anthony Harb who had over 1.1 million in chips.  Harb reluctantly turned over A Q  when he saw what he was up against.  The flop came 6  Q  T .  Harb celebrated about hitting his kicker.  The turn and river came a 6  and a T  to knock Mandt out in 11th place.

We are down to the final table.  Seats will be redrawn, and players are on a 30 minute break.

There have been a few eliminations thus far:

Eric Ladney was eliminated in 14th place.  He pushed all in with A  J  preflop.  Scott Hall called with pocket fives.  The flop gave Ladney a flush draw, but pocket fives were still leading.  The turn came an ace giving Ladney the lead.  However, Hall caught up on the river when a 5 hit, giving him the set.

Jeff Finucane shoved with his short stack, and was eliminated by Mike Carlson in 13th place.

John Hartery was in the big blind, and moved all in over the top of Adrian Dresel-Velasquez who raised to 62k in mid position.  Dresel-Velasquez called the 283k more and turned over A  Q .  Hartery turned over 8  8 .  The flop came an ace to knock Hartery out in 12th place

Only one more bust and we will be down to one table.

Players have been condensed to two tables.  It has become a mounting battle for the short stacks, as many continued to push all in.  The last woman left in the tournament was knocked out in 20th place.  Pilar Tuck’d shoved with Jc Jh, but David Mandt pealed pocket kings.  The board bricked for Tuck’d who was eliminated.

Blinds are now 10,000/20,000.

Olav Von Sachsen was bad beat for his tournament life.  He raised under the gun, and Anthony Harb woke up with Ac Kc and moved in over the top.  Everyone folded around to Von Sachsen who went all in showing J  J .  The flop comes out 2  5  J .  Harb starts counting out the chips he will have to send Von Sachsen’s way.  The turn was a Q .  Harb perked up and started shouting, “Ten, ten, ten!”  The river gave way to Harb and delivered a 10  for the runner-runner straight.

Mike Carlson was also able to deliver a bad beat to Michael Dyer.  Carlson shoved his short stack of 250k and Dyer called.  Carlson turned over A  6 and Dyer turned A  10 .  The flop came 8  5  9 .  Carlson seemed optimistic about hitting his gutshot.  The turn came a 9  and the river a 7 .  Carlson hit and was able to double up.

Dyer wasn’t through trying to get rid of the short stacks though.  Kenneth Smaron shoved all in for 350k and Dyer called.  Smaron had the best of it with A Q against Dyer’s K 8.  The flop delivered an 8 and Smaron couldn’t recover.

The final day of Event 11 has begun.  Players started the day with 25 players, and will play down to 18 and then redraw for seats.  When they get to the final 9 they will move to the main stage where the event will be filmed for broadcast by ESPN.

The blinds started out with 8,000/16,000 with a 2,000 ante.  The short stacks are putting a lot of pressure on the larger stacks, and someone can be seen moving all in every few hands.  Two players have been knocked out in the first level of play today.  Robert Goodson and Warren Woodall have been eliminated.

David Mandt, however, was able to push all in with A  Q  and was called by Steven Fager who held A K off suit.  The flop came an ace, and by the river Mandt had caught up with a flush and was able to double up.

Jonathan McGowan started the day as one of the shorter stacks, but he has a very upbeat attitude.  In the big blind he likes to sing the song by Unk, “Now walk it out, now walk it out.”  So far it has worked 1 out of 10 times.

Michael Dyer was taken out by Jim Geary after he had been pushing with his short stack.  Dyer pushed again, and Geary was quick to move all in over the top of him.  Everyone else folded to let the two battle it out.  Geary turned over K K against Dyer’s 99.  The flop came out A  3  J  2  A .  Dyer was sent to collect his tournament winnings.

25 players remain on their quest for a gold bracelet and the $569,254 first place prize in the $2,000 No Limit Hold'em event. The field is ready for action. Keep it here to find out who will become the winner and who will be eliminated. Due to the field not making it down to a final table of nine, play begins at 12:00 p.m. local time per WSOP rules.
