Here is the combined player list with chip counts and day 2 seat assignments, sorted by chip counts (to see this list sorted by table/seat, go to the day 2 blog):
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 10:56 PM The bell has rung signaling the end of level 10 and the end of day 1A. Before the bell: On the last hand, Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson was all-in with AT versus the AJ of Isaac 'westmenlo' Baron. A Jack on the flop was all he needed to snuff Chris' Shooting Star and collect the $5,000 bounty. With that pot, Isaac chipped up to 153,700 and that put him in the chip lead, earning him another $10,000 bonus. Vivek Rajkumar ended the day with 137k. Update on 1B Shooting Star bounties: All survivors will return at 10:45am Wednesday for day 2. Chip counts will be posted here when available.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 10:43 PM A short stack got all-in from the small blind with action from both Daniel Negreanu and Adam 'Roothlus' Levy. The flop came 8 7 6 rainbow and Daniel check/called Adam's 9,500 bet. They checked down the last two cards of 3 2. Daniel showed pocket Queens and Adam mucked. The all-in player held KQ and was busted. Daniel chipped up to ~80k. More Star v. Star action: Defending champ Brandon Cantu got all-in on a K 8 6 J board, facing Eli Elezra. Brandon held AK for top/top and was trailing Eli's two pair with J8. Then the river brought another 6, giving Brandon a better two-pair to take the pot and double up. His bounty goes uncollected, for now. Brandon has ~53k while Eli was left with ~48k.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 10:13 PM On a flop of K Due to the random nature of breaking/balancing tables, four bounties have ended up on one table. Table 23 is now home to (1) Allen Cunningham, (2) Brandon Cantu, (4) Daniel Negreanu, and (5) Eli Elezra. Also at that table are (6) Paul 'uclabruinz'' Smith and (7) Adam 'Roothlus' Levy. All players will get new seat assignments on day 2 and the bounties will be distributed as evenly as possible to start the day. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 09:56 PM Level 10: Blinds 400/800 with 100 antes. Play has resumed. This will be the last level of the day. 112 players remain. Goners: Mike 'GoLeafsGoEh' Leah, Matt Brady, Tommy Le, Peter Neff, Blake Cahail, David 'Chino' Rheem, Jon Friedberg, Hafiz Khan, Jamie Rosen, and Clonie Gowen.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 09:46 PM End of level 9 and they are taking ten to color up the green 25 chips. Before the break: Vivek Rajkumar ran pocket Queens into pocket Kings and was about to double-up a shorter stack, but then he caught a back-door flush, busted another player, and has taken the chip lead with ~160k. Shooting Star Jeff Madsen got all-in with pocket Kings against Justin Scott's A4 off. The board came K T 4 8 3 and Jeff doubled up to ~10k. Shooting Star Chau Giang got his last chips in with Q9 suited and ran into the pocket Kings of JP Byrne. Chau flopped a flush draw and turned a pair of 9s, but blanked on the river and was busted. Another $5k bounty paid. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 09:13 PM On a final board of Q J 5 4 5, David Levy was all-in and called. He held pocket 5s for quads and doubled up to ~60k.
On the next hand, seat 6 moved all-in for 1,300 from the button. Vivek (sb) raised to 2k, then the big blind moved all-in for 8k total. Vivek decided to make the call, showing K7 off. The big blind held KT off and seat 6 held A7 off for the lead. The board came 9 5 8 J 4 and seat 6 tripled up, while seat 8 (bb) took the side pot. After those two hands Vivek was sitting behind about 110k. In a three-way confrontation, Shooting Star JC Tran was all-in with pocket Tens, Dan Heimiller was all-in with pocket Kings, and Tony Cousineau (who had them both covered) held pocket 6s. The flop came Q Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 08:46 PM Level 9: Blinds 300/600 with 75 antes. Play has resumed.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 08:31 PM End of level 8 and players are taking 15. Before the break: Michael Binger got his last chips in with pocket Kings, only to run into the pocket Aces of Devin Porter. The Aces held up and Michael was bounced. Devin collected the $5,000 bounty. Despite adding Barry Greenstein's chips to his own, Josh Arieh has also busted out. After opening utg, Josh got three callers, then David Forester (bb) re-raised. He got two callers (including Josh) and the flop came 8 5 5. David checked, Josh fired, third player folded, David check-raised enough to cover Josh and Josh called all-in, showing pocket Jacks. David held pocket Kings and was way ahead. Only a Jack would save Josh. The last two came 7 A and Josh was busted. David chipped up to ~90k. 133 players remain.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 08:12 PM Barry Greenstein got his last chips in when he turned a flush, only to discover that the same card completed Josh Arieh's full house. Barry was busted and Josh collected his $5,000 bounty. On an 8-high flop, Chris Ferguson called a short-stack's all-in. Chris had AK off (two overs) and was behind his opponent's pocket 6s. The last two cards bricked and his opponent doubled up, leaving Chris with ~30k. Seat 9 raised to 1,500 and Gary Tighe (button) three-bet to 3,500. Seat 9 made the call and the flop came A
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 07:52 PM Shooting Star Scotty Nguyen got his last chips in on the turn with a set against the flush draw of Wook Kim. Wook got there on the river, sending the reigning (reining?) HORSE champion to the rail. Wook collected the $5,000 bounty and Scotty signed autographs all the way out the door. Alex Bolotin, who final tabled the WSOP Circuit Championship at Casesar's AC on Saturday, got his last chips in with K8 offsuit. Defending Champ Brandon Cantu was ahead with pocket 4s. The board bricked out and Brandon took the pot, sending Alex to the rail. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 07:31 PM Level 8: Blinds 250/500 with 50 antes. Play continues. Vinny Vinh got his last 3,500 in pre-flop with AT offsuit against Tim Vance's pocket 5s. The board blanked and Vinny was toast.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 07:23 PM Nam Le (who won this event in 2006) got his last 2,100 all-in and behind with KQ against A6 suited. The board came K J 6 9 8 and Nam paired up to double up. A short while later, Nam was all-in again, this time ahead with pocket Kings versus AT. The flop brought an Ace for his opponent and there was no salvation for Nam. His opponent collected the pot and the $5,000 bounty. Justin Scott got all-in with pocket 9s against AK. The board came Jack-high and Justin's pair was good for he double-up. His opponent, Jonathan Aguiar, was left with less than 1k and busted out soon after when he ran AT into pocket Aces.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 07:07 PM Shooting Star Scotty Nguyen got all-in with A After a short-stack moved all-in on the button, Isaac 'westmenlo' Baron called from the small blind. The button showed 7 These folks have disappeared at some point today: Ryan Young, Nick Binger, Allen Bari, JJ Liu, Robert 'RCW' Cheung, Ray Lynn, Jason Potter, and Tuan Le. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 06:31 PM Level 7: Blinds 200/400 with 50 antes. Play has resumed.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 05:33 PM
Before the bell: On the river with the board showing 8 7 2 2 4, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier got his last chips in the middle. His opponent showed pocket 8s for the full house and ElkY mucked his hand, heading for the door. Binh Nguyen and Kevin Saul have also recently departed. Gary Tighe is leading the field with ~142k. 186 players remain. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 05:28 PM
On the turn with the board showing 9 4 4 5, Chad Batista (cutoff) bet 5,200. His opponent in seat 6 tanked for a long time and eventually the clock was called. Before time expired, he shoved all-in. Chad insta-called all-in for less, showing pocket 5s for the full boat. Seat 6 held Q9 suited for nines-up. River was a blank and Chad doubled up to ~50k. A few hands later, the same two tangled again. The board read T Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 04:59 PM
More goners: Matt Hyman, Shane Schleger, Lee Markholt, Chris McCormack, and Billy Pilossoph. Shooting Star vs. Shooting Star: Allen Cunningham got all-in with pocket Queens against the pocket Jacks of Kathy Liebert. The board came 9 9 7 3 T and Allen doubled through. On a flop of Q 5 4, Shooting Star JC Tran got all-in with pocket 5s for middle set. His opponent held pocket Jacks. The last two came 8 8 and JC doubled up. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 04:32 PM Level 6: Blinds 150/300 with 50 antes. Play continues.
Phil 'Unabomber' Laak got his chips in on a King-high flop holding KQ for top pair. Bad news: Frank Khadivi held AK and had Phil out-kicked. The last two brought no clemency for the Unabomber and he was sent packing. Frank collected his $5,000 bounty. On a final board of J On a flop of T Jeff Madsen was all-in with pocket 6s against KQ. The board came A 7 3 8 T and Jeff doubled up. Very soon after that, Jeff was all-in again, this time holding KQ against Daniel Negreanu's J Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 04:09 PM Final player count for this event is 391, creating a prize pool of $3,714,500. The final 45 players will get paid as follows:
*Includes $25,500 for the seat in the Season 7 WPT championship.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 03:51 PM On an 9 8 6 flop, Michael 'the Grinder' Mizrachi got all-in with pocket 6s for bottom set. Bad news for the Grinder is that Marco Johnson held pocket 8s for top set and had the Grinder on the ropes. The last two cards came J 8 and Marco made quads to bust the Grinder, collecting the $5,000 bounty on his head. John Phan got his last chips in good with pocket Kings, getting three-way action against AJ and A2. In this case, the worst hand wins when the board came 5 4 3 Q J and Gary Tighe flopped a wheel to bust John and collect his bounty. James Mackey was all-in with AK suited, running into Kathy Liebert's pocket Kings. James caught a glimmer of hope when he picked up a flush draw on the turn, but it did not complete and James was busted. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 03:32 PM Level 5: Blinds 100/200 with 25 antes. Play has resumed. 220 players remain. WPT is reporting that Lars Long is the chip leader with 68k. Howard Lederer is second with 66k. Chris Ferguson is third with 53k.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 03:17 PM End of level 4 and players are taking 15. On a flop of K Michael 'the Grinder' Mizrachi was involved in a three-way all-in. He had the best of it with pocket Kings, facing AQ and 98 suited. The board came K 6 4 J 4 and the Grinder tripled up to ~22k with a full house. David Chiu was all-in again, but his AK was up against another AK and they split the pot. Then David got all-in again with pocket 9s, but ran into James Viglizzo's pocket Queens. The bigger pair held up and David was busted. Another bounty collected. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 02:56 PM
On the river with a board of A On a board of Q T x Q x, seat 9 got all-in against Nick Sliwinski. Seat 9 held Q3 for trip Queens, but Nick held QT for Queens-full to take the pot, sending another player home. David Chiu had another player all-in and in bad shape, with David's pocket Aces dominating his opponent's AK. Unfortunately for David, his opponent caught runner-runner to make a flush, cacking David's Aces and doubling up. That hand left David with less than 1k. A bit later, he got his last chips in with AJ, getting action from a player holding 54 suited. The board bricked out and David doubled up with Ace-high. His bounty goes uncollected, for now.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 02:33 PM On a flop of 7 234 players remain. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 02:17 PM Level 4: Blinds 100/200. Play continues. 238 players remain. Had to settle a bet between Alex Bolotin and Devo on how old James van Alstyne is (no idea why they are on this topic). Apparently Alex had <45. According to Wikipedia, James was born in 1966, which makes him 43 this year on his birthday. Pay up, Devo.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 01:59 PM On a flop of 6 4 2 with two hearts, Shooting Star Ted Forrest got all his chips in the middle. David Politzer called with J Antonio Esfandiari lost most of his chips on an earlier hand and was now all-in for 25 on the small blind. He didn't look at his cards as an early position player raised to 700, got two callers, then Tony Gargano raised to 3,500 on the button. Two players called to see the flop of 7 5 4 rainbow. It was checked to Tony, who bet 7k, folding the other two players. When the cards were turned up, Tony held A8 off for two overs. Antonio rolled over J4 off and was actually ahead with a pair of 4s. Then an Ace fell on the turn giving Tony the lead. River was a 3 and Antonio was busted. Tony collected the $5,000 bounty.
7 2 7 2 Jennifer Harman fired a bet and got raised by the button. Jennifer moved all-in, having her opponent covered. He tanked for a couple of minutes, then let it go.Men 'the Master' Nguyen and Ray Lynn were invovled in a multi-way pot. At the river, the board showed Q The Pai Gow table has broken and those players have now joined the maddening crowd in the main tournament area. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 01:22 PM Players I missed on earlier passes: Alex Bolotin, Peter 'nordberg' Feldman, Jacobo Fernandez, Chris Karagulleyan, Tuan Le, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, Hafiz Khan, Mohsin 'chicagocards' Charania, and Shane 'shaniac' Schleger. There seems to be some confusion over the numbers. I've been told that one more player signed up during the break, bringing today's count to 256 and the total to 391. (Yesterday I was told 136 total, but that number was apparently incorrect also. Day 1A total was 135 players.) Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 01:16 PM Level 3: Blinds 75/150. Play has resumed. Now the board says 255 players! TD Matt Savage just announced that 246 of those remain and the total # of players for this event is 390, twelve more than last year. 24 Shooting Stars remain.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 01:02 PM End of level 2 and players are taking a 15 minute break. Now the board says 254 players. The number is still going up! Before the break: Jennifer Tilly raised up front and Vivek 'psyduck' Rajkumar three-bet from the middle. Action back to Jennifer, who hit it again. Vivek shoved and Jennifer called all-in for her last ~7,500. Vivek made the call, showing pocket 5s. Jennifer was way ahead with pocket Aces. The flop was safe: 9 7 4. Turn was a Ten, which was also ok. River, however, was a 5 giving Vivek the set and the pot, not to mention the $5,000 bounty. Jennifer said she "had a feeling it was coming" as she prepared to sign the "I busted Jennifer Tilly" T-shirt. Vivek is now up to ~36k. Jon Friedberg's pocket Kings held up to bust a player who had flopped top pair. Jon is up to ~36k. TJ Cloutier reports he's up to ~32k...and he's only played four hands so far today.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 12:34 PM On a board of J 7 5 5, Nenad Medic called a shorter stack's all-in with J7 for top two pair. Unfortunately for the Serb, his opponent held J5 for the full house. River was a brick and Nenad was left with less than 3k. Nenad then got his last chips in with two callers. The board came J 9 5 x 5 and Nenad showed 98 suited for two pair. His opponent, Lars Long, held J7 for a better two-pair to take the pot, so Nenad Medic was the first bounty busted. (Jack-seven must be Nenad's least favorite hand now.) Lars collected the $5,000 bounty and the autographed "I busted Nenad Medic" T-shirt. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 12:11 PM Ok now the board says 251 players. John Phan lost a pot with flush vs. flush and is down to ~7k. Van 'Mrs. Master' Nguyen was busted by Jason Mercier, who is now up to ~32k. They're starting the Shooting Star player introductions, so the floor will be crazy for a bit. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 12:02 PM Level 2: Blinds 50/100. Play continues. The board now says 250 players -- that's the cap for today as I understand it.
Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 11:59 AM In addition to the bounties, here are some other players I spotted on my first pass: Tim Vance, Bryan Devonshire, Allen Bari, Tony Cousineau, Matt Hyman, JJ Liu, Allie Prescott, Phi Nguyen, Josh Arieh, Kevin Saul, Paul Smith, Adam Levy, Clonie Gowen, Robert 'RCW' Cheung, Theo Tran, Ray Lynn, Amnon Filippi, Jason Potter, Jon Friedberg, Steve Sung, Herbie Montalbano, David 'Chino' Rheem, Vivek 'psyduck' Rajkumar, Robert Mizrachi, Dan Heimiller, James Mackey, Devin Porter, Lee Markholt, Nick Binger, John Racener, Matt Brady, Ryan Young, John Smith, Justin Scott, Hevad Khan, and Chad 'lilholdem' Batista. My bad...the odd table across the casino is a Pai Gow table, not a blackjack table. The unfortunate players I know seated over there are Jason DeWitt, Joe Tehan, Mike 'GoLeafsGoEh' Leah, David Levy, and Michael Binger (shooting star bounty). Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 11:35 AM Lots of craziness today. There are 248 players registered so far and as I understand it, the cap is still 250. There is actually one table of players across the casino, playing on a blackjack table instead of a poker table. Here are today's Shooting Star bounty players: Michael Binger, defending champBrandon Cantu, 'Miami' John Cernuto, David Chiu, TJ Cloutier, Allen Cunningham, Eli Elezra, Antonio Esfandiari, Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson, Ted Forrest, Chau Giang, Barry Greenstein, Jennifer Harman, Michael 'the Grinder' Mizrachi, (late sub for Phil Ivey), Phil Laak, Nam Le, Howard Lederer, Kathy Liebert, Jeff Madsen, Nenad Medic, Daniel Negreanu, Men 'the Master' Nguyen, Scotty Nguyen, John Phan, Jennifer Tilly, JC Tran, and David Williams. Of course not all of them have shown up yet. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 11:02 AM Level 1: Blinds 25/50. Play has begun. Despite the long line of players still waiting for seat assignments, TD Matt Savage has put cards in the air. Tuesday, 17th of March 2009 10:56 AM There is still a long line of players waiting to get their seat assignments, so play has not yet begun. The board says 232 players registered already today and registration is still open. Day 1B gets underway at 10:45am Tuesday with a fresh batch of players and bounties.
