Join us Thursday at 12 p.m. PDT for live coverage of Day 3 from the Bellagio.

Wednesday, 22nd of October 2008 08:30 PM

The tournament clock has been stopped with about 20 minutes remaining in the last level of the day. Shawn Sheikhan pleaded with the tournament director to "draw a one, one-time." So they decided to give Shawn the responsibility of drawing, since he spoke up. Sheikhan squeezed the card, but his shoulders dropped as he found it was three-across. Seven more hands, then Day 2 will be finito.

"You are one pathetic loser," said Brad Booth from across the room, we think jokingly.

Ryan Young, Negreanu and Sebok
Booth is in a joking mood after having a player run jacks into his pocket aces. Negreanu is in an even better mood, as he picked up aces as well, and was able to knock out both Tom "durrr" Dwan and another opponent with them, boosting his stack towards 500K.

Negreanu's Poker VT protege, Adam Junglen, didn't quite have the day at the tables Daniel did. Junglen was crushed after his AK couldn't catch up the the queens of Justin Bonomo. Junglen would then fall to Ted Lawson a short while later, after his top pair and straight draw fell to Lawson's aces, which found Broadway on the turn.

More eliminations: Jason Mercier, Amit Makhija, Mike Watson, Scott Seiver, Erick Lindgren, Howard Lederer, Robert Mizrachi, Jennifer Harman and Scotty Nguyen.

Blake Cahail and Zach Hyman
Here's a look at the www.worldpokertour.com's top ten:

Daniel Negreanu -- 480,000
Justin Bonomo -- 345,000
Joe Sebok -- 320,000
Isaac Haxton -- 320,000
Dutch Boyd -- 317,000
Matthew Stout -- 310,000
Blake Cahail -- 295,000
JC Tran -- 285,000
Brad Booth -- 284,000
Jamie Rosen -- 275,000

Bonomo is now in the second spot, thanks to the giant double through provided by Junglen.

Joe Sebok made a big jump into third place after doubling through Ryan Young. Sebok would get the rest of his stack in against young holding pocket queens after a flop of three small diamonds. Young would make the call, having flopped a set of ducks. One of Sebok's queens was the Q , so Young would need to dodge a diamond, or fill up. He could do neither. Running diamonds put a flush on the board, but Sebok's higher flush was enough to put him over 300K. Young is about average with 150K.

Play is about to wrap. We will be back to post the end of day chip counts, just as soon as the Bellagio decides to ship it. Join us Tomorrow (Thurs.) at the crack of noon for Day 3 of the WPT Fest Al Lago main event.

The mighty have fallen. First it was Brian Rast.

Brian Rast
Rast found himself tangling again with Dutch Boyd, who apparently has his number. After Dutch bet the 9 9 8 flop, Rast would move all in for about 75K. Boyd would call the additional 50K or so with K J for the flush draw. Unfortunately, Dutch was up against the A 3 nut flush draw of Rast. Then Dutch spiked a king on the turn. And just for good measure, he found a jack on the river. His top two pair were more than enough to eliminate Rast, who started the day as one of the big stacks, but will instead fall way short of the money.

Antonio Esfandiari started the day as the biggest stack. He's now a goner. Most of his stack migrated across the table to Daniel Negreanu in his last two hands.

In the first confrontation, Negreanu would get it all in after a K-J-x flop. Antonio, holding AA, would make the call. Kid Poker turned over JJ, having flopped middle set. After Negreanu was able to fade an ace on 4th and 5th street, Esfandiari was crippled.

On the very next hand, the Magician was able to pull an AJ out of his sleeve, only to run into Daniel's AQ. No suckout here. Negreanu's hand holds and in a suprising turn, Esfandiari, who came into Day 2 with an enormous chip lead, won't be invited back for Day 3. Meanwhile, Negreanu is up to 350K, which looks to be good for the chip lead.

More notable elims: Lee Markholt, David Pham, Nick Schulman, Matt Brady, Vanessa Rousso
Jared Hamby, Mark Newhouse, Vivek Rajkumar, Chad Brown and Kyle Wilson.

Haxton
Chad Brown was sent downtown by Ted Lawson's nut flush. Wilson, a former point guard at UMASS, picked up top pair with his J10, only to go broke at the hands of Isaac Haxton, who outkicked Wilson with KJ. Haxton is now over 300,000.

Mike "SirWatts" Watson was down towards the 10BB mark and shoved his small stack in the middle holding A9. Watson would get action from Jonathan Aguiar, who tabled KJ. Watson was able to catch a pair on the turn and another on the river to double trough. Watson is now around his 45K starting stack.

At the same table, former LAPC winner Eric Herschler had his JJ hold up in a race with Alec Torelli and his AK. Herschler is up over 55K.

We're about to wrap up level 9. One more 90-minute level to play. Level 10 means blinds of 1,000-2,000 and a 300 ante. There are about 120 players remaining.

Wednesday, 22nd of October 2008 05:10 PM

Another wave of players have bit the dust, many of them in pots involving pocket aces.

First is was Allen Kessler, who ran his ladies into the AA of Marco Traniello. Matt Graham, who took down the second to last bracelet event on the WSOP schedule, had just A-10, but decided to run the hand, albeit unsuccesfully, into an unknown's rockets. Matt "allinat420" Stout was able to eliminate one player after his aces held, and double through another, dragging a three-way pot that brought him all the way up to 175K.

Cajelais - an AA casualty
EriK Cajelais wasn't as lucky with his preflop nuts. He got the action he wanted after an opponent was up for playing the pot for Cajelais last 100K or so with A K. The flop produced a couple hearts, meaning Cajelais would have to dodge a heart twice to survive. A harmless diamond fell on the turn, changing nothing, but the river Q finished out the flush, eliminating Cajelais.

Esfandiari's hot streak continues to cool. He found himself involved in another pot with Negreanu. The Magician's A10 managed to find top two on the A-10-2 flop, but after the turn and river each brought another 2, Negreanu would get to show his A4 cheap, earning the chop.

"Ouch. I can't believe how cold you're running now," chuckled Negreanu.

Michael Binger, Layne Flack and Gus Hansen have each bit the dust. The board is showing 165 players remaining. Nenad Medic looks to have assumed the chip lead and is approaching the 300K mark that Esfandiari started the day at.

Here's a look at the unofficial top ten:

Demichele changes tunes while Medic stacks another pot

Nenad Medic -- 269,500
JC Tran -- 255,000
Jennifer Tilly -- 237,000
Johnny Chan -- 235,000
Antonio Esfandiari -- 225,000
Ryan Young -- 222,000
JC Alvarado -- 219,000
Chad Layne -- 216,000
Daniel Schreiber -- 206,925
Sabyl Cohen-Landrum -- 206,000

Wednesday, 22nd of October 2008 03:35 PM

It's break time again. Level 8 will crank up in 15-minutes, with 600-1,200 blinds and 200 antes. Before the break, Dutch Boyd was able to double through Brian Rast and his huge stack.

With A-9-Q-9-A already on the board and more a pot of nearly 100K at risk, Rast, the preflop reraiser, would tank to a 23K bet by Boyd. After a couple minutes, Rast would make the call to see Dutch turn over AQ, for aces full of ladies. Rast would flash a 9, before throwing his smaller full house in the muck.

On the next table over, Sabyl Landrum had an opponent all in and at risk on a K-7-7-2-A board. Her opponent would show J7, for trip sevens. Then Sabyl showed her pocked deuces, having turned a boat. Her opponent is now long gone while Sabyl has joined the 200K club.

There are less than 200 players remaining in the main event as at least 60 players have already been bounced from Day 2. Kenny Tran, Ralph Perry, Kathy Leibert and John Hennigan are some of the latest to be dismissed.

Dutch, Jimmy Tran and Rast
Here's a look at the top ten stacks from the WPT website:

Chad Layne -- 240,000
Brian Rast -- 238,000
Jennifer Tilly -- 235,000
JC Alvarado -- 219,000
Isaac Haxton -- 212,000
Sabyl Cohen-Landrum -- 210,000
Daniel Schreiber -- 206,925
Antonio Esfandiari -- 200,000
Joe Sebok -- 200,000
Ryan Young -- 198,000

Wednesday, 22nd of October 2008 02:45 PM

Players are in the middle of level 7 now, with 500-1,000 blinds and 100 antes.

Antonio Esfandiari has dropped in the chip counts. He now sits behind about 150K, which is still above average, but may have had some more wind taken out of his sails after running into the nut flush on a A 10 9 2 9 board.

But the hits haven't seemed to change the Magician's mood quite yet. Esfandiari is getting the table conversation started. His latest conversation starter is a prop bet; trying to figure out how many men Daniel Negreanu thinks VP Candidate Sarah Palin may have slept with in her life. Antonio was as high as nine, before Negreanu stopped the bidding, informing the table that he believes Palin's husband is her one and only. "Yeah, but she lives in Alaska," Esfandiari added. "There isn't much to do there."

And if you needed any more evidence that baseball is AMERICA'S pasttime, this was overheard at the same table:

"So who do you guys like in the baseball game tonight?" asked a tablemate.

"Who's playing?" responded Negreanu, a Canadian. Guess they haven't heard of the World Series up there. Maybe he'd pay attention if the Blue Jays were playing.

Alaei watches Nam (Boston hat) take care of Rosenblum
Nam Le can add another 50K+ to his stack, thanks to 2002 Main Event final tabler Russell Rosenblum. A series of preflop raises cued Rosenblum to shove about 53K into the middle. Nam would make the verbal call before Russell's stack made it into the pot. Russell tabled AK and would be looking for a miracle to crack the rockets held by Nam. Nothing happening on the jack-high board and Rosenblum is done.

Kristy Gazes followed Rosenblum to the rail. After Jennifer Harman opened with a raise to 2,800, WPT Bellagio Cup IV Champion Mike "SirWatts" Watson came over the top with his last 13,000. Kristy looked down at a couple of ladies in the BB and shipped her last 17,000 or so, chasing Harman out of the way.

Alec Torelli and Kristy Gazes
The cards were turned and Watson's KK had Kristy in trouble. After the dealer ran out the 4-4-J-10-6 board, Watson had more than doubled, while Kristy was down to just a few thousand. She would ship those chips a few minutes later, unsuccessfully.

Also banished to the sidelines are Hevad Khan, John "World" Hennigan, Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Steve Sung and Blair Hinkle. Sung's JJ lost a race vs. Eric Liu for the rest of his stack. Hinkle, who picked up his first bracelet this summer, held K10 against a K-J-x-x board and would get his short stack all in. His opponent would make the call, turning over KJ for top two. The river was a cruel J, filling up Hinkles opponent.

Jennifer Tilly appears to have the chip lead at the moment, holding onto 232,000 chips.

Wednesday, 22nd of October 2008 01:20 PM

Play has begun and the chip leader wasted little time getting involved in a big pot.

Antonio Esfandiari started the day with a 100,000 chip lead on the next closest competitor and will need all of them. Not only does the Magician had Daniel Negreanu at his table, but he'll also be sharing the felt with Jason Mercier, perhaps the hottest tournament player on the planet right now. Surprisingly, it would be an unknown player handing the WPT poster boy a big hit.

Esfandiari makes it 2,400 to go from the CO, while the BB comes over the top, making it 7,400. Esfandiari would call to see the 2 3 4 flop. His opponent would lead out for another 8,000 and was met by the Magician's insta-call. After the K turned, Esfandiari would chose to lead out for 18,000, a move that triggered his opponent to shove. Antonio would make the call to turn over 7 8 for the flush. Sadly, for Esfandiari, his opponent would turn over A Q for the nut flush. Drawing dead, Esfandiari would ship over 50K across the table, putting a dent in his chip lead.

Brian Rast now sits just 20K or so behind Esfandiari, but has his work cut out for him as well. Former WPT NAPC champ Scott Clements, Vinny Pahuja, Jared Hamby and Jimmy Tran will all have their shots at Rast and his 210K.

My vote for most stacked table in the room goes to table #57. It is home to Tuan Le, Jennifer Harman, Jonathan Aguiar, Chau Giang, Kristy Gazes, Eric Herschler and Alec Torelli, who conquered back-to-back preliminary events here at the Festa Al Lago.

Jesus and Daniel on Day 1A
The table featuring Tony Cousineau, Allen Kessler, Blair Hinkle, Marco Traniello, Erik Cajelais and Chris "Jesus" Ferguson got a little lighter, at Jesus' expense. The bearded one was all in holding K10 on a K-high flop, only to run into a pair of aces. No suckout for Jesus means he's walking.

Other rail-bound notables: Full Tilters David Benyamine, Erik Seidel, Jonathan Little and Team PokerStars Pro Alexandre Gomes. Little, last year's Mirage Poker Showdown champ and WPT POY, still had a good Festa Al Lago as he finished runner-up to Torelli in both of his wins.

Due to the size of the Day 2 field, a few tables were forced to start the day in the main Bellagio card room. Some of the cash game players had the treat of playing next to Doyle Brunson, Erik Seidel, Mike Matusow, Jennifer Tilly and Howard Lederer for a bit, but they are now in the process of consolidating the tourney to just the Fontana room.

Wednesday, 22nd of October 2008 11:55 AM

The start must be getting close. Many of the tournament's 256 survivors are scrambling to the info desk to see how cruel/kind the redraw was for them.

Play will begin in level 6, with 400-800 binds and 100 antes. Tournament officials decided to wait until morning to race off the 25 chips, so play will start a little late today as they get the greens colored up. We'll be back after the cards are in the air.

Day 2 of the 2008 WTP Festa Al Lago begins Wednesday at 12 p.m. PDT.
