2008 World Series of Poker - $10K World Championship Main Event - Day 6

We're down to three tables.  Of the original 6,844 entrants, just 27 still have a shot at becoming the next Main Event champion and the $9 million first-place prize.  Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow and Victor Ramdin couldn't survive the battle that was Day Six.  Tiffany Michelle, Chino Rheem and Brandon Cantu did, and are among those chasing Dennis Phillips and Craig Marquis, who will enter the Day Seven with more than 11 million chips each.  Who will get their ticket punched for a seat at November's final table?  Live coverage of Day Seven begins Monday at 12 p.m. PDT.

Official 'In the Money Finishers' listed below chip count table.

Players returned from break and played another 40 mins at the tables, at which time the final three tables were formed and the clock was stopped.

First to go was Romanian Christian Dragomir. Dragomir was down to his last 1.5 million and came over the top of an Ivan Demidov raise with all of it. Demidov would call.

It was Dragomir's 10-10 in a bad way against the A-A of Demidov. The dealer would run out a Q-6-2-7-J, not even a sweat card. Demidov's aces had held, putting us just one elimination from Day Seven.

Cristian Dragomir is done in 29th, earning $193,000.

The ESPN cameras circled, just waiting to pounce at the next all in and a call. A couple of false alarms would give way for the last all in of the day.

Action folds to Nicholas Sliwinski in the SB. Sliwinski makes the call, but Nikolay Losev decided to make it 775K. Sliwinski moved all in. Losev tanked, before deciding to call off his last 750K.

Losev turned his hand over, showing just 8-3. Sliwinski tabled A-5 and was in good shape to put a close on Day Six. The 10-4-10-9-4 board was no help to Losev. Sliwinski's ace kicker played.

Nikolay Losev is our 28th-place finisher and will take home $193,000.

High fives and fist pounds all around the Amazon Room. Only 27 of the 6,844 who entered the Main Event will be back for Day Five, each with a shot at returning in November to sit at the epic 2008 final table. Players must now stop the celebrations and begin bagging and tagging. Chip counts and official results will be posted shortly.

Join us tomorrow at noon PDT as the final three tables will be trimmed to just one.

Scott Montgomery has put a nice little run together. Not long after taking a big pot off of Dean Hamrick, he was busting Brokos. A few hands later, Montgomery played a big one with Owen Crowe.

Both players saw a cheap 10-7-6 flop. Crowe check-raised Montgomery from 125K to 300K and picked up a call. The turn brought a king and a bet of 500K from Crowe. Montgomery would call to see the dealer put out a 6 on the river. Both players checked and Montgomery's 10-7 had hit two pair, besting the Q-10 and one pair of Crowe.

Brandon Cantu has surrendered his chip lead.

Cantu called a reraise from Craig Marquis, it cost 700K to see the J-6-5 flop. Action was check-check. The free turn card was an ace and Cantu check-raised, from 200K to 1 million. Marquis called. The river brought a 10. Cantu shoved and Marquis called. Cantu immediately threw his hand in the muck. Marquis showed A-Q for a pair of aces. Cantu falls below 5 million, while Marquis is up to 12 million.

Now for the eliminations.

Jamal Kunbuz was next to hit the payouts line. Kunbuz looked down at A-10 and open-shoved his last million. Ylon Schwartz isolated with a reraise, before tabling A-A. The 10-8-4 flop gave Kunbuz some hope, but the 7 and J on fourth and fifth street did him in.

Jamal Kunbuz is our 33rd-place finisher, worth $193,000.

Kunbuz was quickly met in the payouts line by Clint Schafer.

Schafer was down to just 330K and shoved from the button. Tim Loecke made the call from the BB. Schafer was behind, but live, holding K-8 to the A-Q of Loecke. The A-7-5-4 board had Schafer calling for a river 6. But after a 3 rivered, Loecke's pair of aces had held.

Clint Schafer has been eliminated in 32nd-place, earning $193,000.

Garrett Beckman faded a trip to the rail in his first of two all ins. Beckman's K-J was up against Q-Q, but found a boat on the J-4-4-J-K board.

Beckman would take those chips to battle with Dennis Phillips. Phillips called 175K from Beckman to see the 7 6 10 flop. The 9 was turned for free, but the river would cost Beckman everything. His bet of 280K was reraised to 600K by Phillips. Beckman then moved all in and Phillips quickly called. Phillips' K-8 had found a straight on the turn, while Beckman tabled A Q, for nothing but a club draw. After Phillips faded the river club, the rest of Beckman's chips were shipped in his direction.

Garrett Beckman is done in 31st, good for a $193,000 payday.

In the last hand of level 27, the Main Event lost its biggest remaining name.

After spending most of the day uncharacteristically quiet, Mike "the Mouth" Matusow played a big one with Paul Snead. Snead started the pot by raising to 200K. Matusow reraised to 650K and Snead called. A-A-5 on the flop and both players checked. After a 9 fell on the turn, Matusow opened with a bet of 500K and Snead moved all in. Matusow made the call.

Matusow turned A-J, for trip aces. Snead tabled A-9, having turned aces full. Matusow would be looking for a jack on the river, but would have to settle for a king. Matusow's trips were no good.

Mike Matusow is out in 30th-place, earning $193,000 for his Main Event run.

Break time. Down to 29 players, still looking to lose two more. Level 28 means 40K/80K blinds, plus 10K for an ante.

Kim is hit and miss with the ladies.

Kelly Kim was the first in the pot, making it 180K to play. Jason Riesenberg made the call, as did Peter Eastgate. 7 5 3 on the flop and Kim check-called 400K from Riesenberg. Eastgate mucked. The turn was the 7. Both players would check to see the 2 on the river. Kim led out for 600K and Riesenberg moved in for 1.5 million. Kim went into the tank. After five minutes, Kim mucked pocket queens face up. Riesenberg turned to his girl in the crowd and told her, "quad sevens, sweetie." He tabled the other two sevens and added to his stack, which is right at the 4 million average.

Kim would get some chips back, at the expense of Nikolay Losev. Losev was one of four to pay 175K to see the Q-5-2 flop. Action was checked to Kim, who bet 400K. Losev would be the only taker. After the 6 turned, a bet of 1 million from Kim was enough to scare off Losev. Kim flashed Q-Q for top set and chipped up to 9 million. Losev looks to be just above 1.5 million.

On the ESPN table, Christian Dragomir was able to collect a few chips. After bleeding many away to Tiffany Michelle earlier in the day, Dragomir showed a boat vs. Albert Kim to take a 2 million chip pot. Dragomir's river bet of 470K was called by Kim. Dragomir showed A-K against the K-K-5-6-A board and Kim threw his hand in the muck.

Dragomir wouldn't wait long to give some of those chips to Tiffany. In a battle of the blinds, Tiffany called 125K on the flop and 175K on the turn of a 8-6-2-A board. After the river came K, Dragomir check-called 500K from Tiffany, who turned over Q-8 for a pair of eights, queen kicker. Dragomir mucked 8-10 face up, his ten kicker failing him in the end. Dragomir is back to 2 million, while Tiffany is at 7.5 million.

We lost a couple more players. First it was Andrew Brokos moving all in for his last 1.1 million. Scott Montgomery, who opened the betting with a raise, would call the additional 925K. Brokos found himself in a race, his A-Q trailing Montgomery's J-J. The board was an uneventful K-6-2-5-K, meaning the jacks were still good.

Andrew Brokos is out in 35th, earning $193,000.

Greg Byard was down to his last 500K and shoved from the button. Ivan Demidov woke up with a hand in the BB and made the call. Demidov showed K-J, dominating the J-6 of Byard. The flop contained a king, pairing Demidov. The other four board cards were of no help to Byard, who is now busted.

Greg Byard's Main Event is over. He'll earn $193,000 for finishing in 34th-place.

Craig Marquis appears to be the new chip leader. He is sitting behind about 12 million in chips.

Sunday, 13th of July 2008 09:00 PM

The 35 survivors have returned from dinner break. The tournament staff is looking to trim the field to 27 before calling it a night.

We're in level 27 now, with 30K/60K blinds and 10K antes. Hard to refer to 4 million chips as average, but that amount only puts you in the middle of the pack right now.

Sunday, 13th of July 2008 07:20 PM

Brandon Cantu opened for 175k and Nikolay Losev called from the button, as did Peter Eastgate in the big blind. On the A J 8 rainbow flop, Peter checked, Brandon fired 350k, and Nikolay called. Peter got out of the way and the turn was an Ace. Brandon fired 475k and Nikolay made it a cool million. Brandon called. River was a 4. Brandon checked and Nikolay started futzing with his chips as he has done before, counting them out, stacking them back up. Some players complained about the action, whether it was or was not a string bet. The floor was called and Nikolay was warned, via translator, about proper chip movement. His final bet was 1.5 million and Brandon called, showing pocket 8s for the full house. Nikolay mucked and Brandon has crossed the ten-million mark.

Niklas Flisbert shoved for 450k and Peter Neff looked him up from the small blind. Niklas held KT off and was trailing Peter’s AQ, but the board came T 8 8 9 5 and Niklas doubled to ~1 million.

Joe Bishop opened for 225k and Kido Pham made the 1.13 million push from the small blind. Joe tanked for a bit, then made the call showing pocket Jacks. Kido held AK off and would need to improve to survive. The J T 9 flop gave Joe the set, but gave Kido four outs. Any Queen would give him a straight. The last two were 9 3 and and Joe took the pot.

Thang ‘Kido’Pham finished in 41st place, earning $154,400.

Clint Schaefer opened for 150k and Nick Sliwinski called from the cutoff. On the flop of T 7 5 , Clint fired 225k. Nick called. Turn was a 3 . Clint fired 600k and Nick shoved for ~2.7 million. Clint tanked for quite a while, counting out his remaining chips (about 1 million) and seeming to agonize over the decision. When he finally decided to fold, Nick showed A 5 for a pair of 5s and flush draw. Clint slammed his hand on the table – apparently he made a bad laydown.

On a flop of Q 8 7 with two diamonds, Peter Eastgate fired 200k and Mauro Lupo shoved for 1.2 million. Peter called, showing A K for the flush draw. Mauro held QJ offsuit for top pair. The turn was the K , giving Peter the lead and the river was the T clinching Peter’s win.

Mauro Lupo finished in 40th place, earning $154,400.

Following a raise and a call, Craig Stein moved in for 580 from the big blind. The opened folded, but Darus Suharto looked him up, showing pocket Queens. Craig’s AJ would need to improve for him to survive. The board came Q T 2 6 2 and Darus took the pot.

Craig Stein finished in 39th place, earning $154,400.

On the second feature table, Craig Marquis opened the action with a raise to 150K from the button. Felix Osterland moved his last 1.25 million in from the SB and Chino Rheem made the risky call from the BB. Luckily for Rheem, Marquis let his hand go, leaving the two to battle heads-up.

Rheem showed pocket eights. Osterland tabled A-10, racing with Rheem's pair for his tournament life. Osterland would find a 10 in the window, only to see Rheem pick up a set after the dealer fanned out the 10-8-2 flop. The turn and river would bring a couple blanks, handing the pot to Rheem and his set of eights.

Mike Matusow wasn't a big fan of the Rheem overcall. Matusow told him, "I love you man. You are my friend. But that was a horrific call." Rheem agreed to disagree and began adding to his stack, which is now nearing 8 million chips.

Felix Osterland has been eliminated in 38th-place, earning $154,400.

Kelly Kim made it 130K to go and Andrew Rosskamm made it 450K to go from the SB. Kim made the call to see the 9 J 10 flop. Rosskamm wasted no time shoving his last 2 million. Kim was even quicker with the call.

Kim turned over A Q , having flopped the nut flush. Rosskamm tabled A-J for top top, but was without a heart and would be looking to fill up. The turn brought the 9 , pairing the board and giving Rosskamm some hope. Sadly, the river was the 6 . Kim faded both a 9 or J on the river to take down the monster pot. Kim, of Whittier, Alaska, is now over 8 million in chips.

Andrew Rosskamm had his Main Event end with a 37th-place finish, worth $154,400.

After the button opened for a raise, Peter Neff shoved from the small blind.  Then Darus Suharto shoved from the big blind.  The button folded and Peter discovered that his A9 off was badly beaten by Darus' AJ offsuit.  The board came K J 8 8 K, giving Darus the pot.

Peter Neff finished in 36th place, earning $193,000.

Level 26 came to an end and the remaining 35 players have been sent on a 90-minute dinner break.

Brandon Cantu is the chip leader with 10.1 million.

Sunday, 13th of July 2008 06:00 PM

Now that Hellmuth has been sent packing, Tiffany Michelle and her tablemates now find themselves at the feature table in the ESPN arena. Michelle hasn't let the pressure of the main stage keep her from being active.

First it was Michelle spreading some of her chips around the table. Joe Bishop called a raise to 200K from Tiffany to see the 10 10 8 flop. Bishop would check-call Tiffany down as the turn and river came 5 and 3, respectively. He showed 7 6, having turned a flush. Tiffany mucked, her stack dropping to 4 million. Bishop used the 3 million chip pot to top the 7 million chip mark.

Tiffany would get some of those chips right back. She reraised Ivan Demidov out of a 2 million chip pot, her raise to 1.6 million on the turn chasing him off the K-J-8 board. Shortly after, Tiffany went all in over the top of Garrett Beckman. Beckman reraised to see an A-6-6 flop, but mucked after his 300K bet was met with Tiffany's all in. Tiffany Michelle is now back to 6 million.

Feature Table 1: Kido Pham got all his chips (725k) in the middle pre-flop and got action from Joe Bishop. Kido’s A-Q was badly dominated by Joe’s AK. Then the flop came Q-3-3 giving Kido the lead with a pair of Queens. Joe needed a King to send Kido home. The turn was a Jack, which gave Joe more outs with the gutshot. A Ten would give him Broadway, but the river was an 8 and Kido doubled up.

Feature Table 2: David ‘Chino’ Rheem opened for 150k. All folded to Chris Crilly in the big blind, who made the call. On the flop of 9 2 2, Chris moved in over the top of Chino’s 200k bet. Chino made the call. Chris held AQ off and was trailing Chino’s pocket Queens. Chris apparently had a lot of supporters up in the MBL lounge looking down on the table as they were calling loudly for an “Ace!” With all due delay for the cameras, the dealer peeled off the turn, which was an 8. More cries for an “ACE” fell on deaf ears, as the river was a King and Chino took the pot, chipping up to ~5 million.

Chris Crilly finished in 44th place, earning $154,400.

Jason Glass raised to 140K and Scott Montgomery came over the top for the rest of his stack. Glass would call the extra 1 million to table A-K. Montgomery showed pocket jacks and it was off to the races. After the board came nine-high, Montgomery's jacks were good for the double up. Glass was left with about 100K.

A few hands later, Glass move in the rest of his stack after a Andrew Brokos raise. Brokos would call to turn over K-J. Glass showed A-6, which was good for a slight lead. Glass maintained that lead after the Q-8-4 flop, but would be headed to the rail after the turn brought a king and the river bricked. Brokos' pair of kings was enough to dispatch Glass.

Jason Glass is out in 43rd place, earning $154,400.

Next to go was Jonathan Plens. Plens saw his raise met with an Anthony Scherer reraise. It was now 400K to go. Plens then moved in the rest of his stack, worth about an even million. Scherer would make the call.

After the cards were exposed, Plens' A-K was in great shape against the A-8 of Scherer. After the A-4-8 flop, Plens watched Scherer hit top two pair to take the lead. The 6 on the turn had Plens looking for a king. The river brought paint, but it was just a queen. Scherer's two pair sent Plens packing.

Jonathan Plens has been eliminated in 42nd-place, worth a cool $154,400.

Sunday, 13th of July 2008 05:00 PM

Peter Eastgate made it 120k to go and Brandon Cantu called from the cutoff. Aaron Keay then shoved for 285k from the big blind. Peter then kicked it on up to 570k, then Brandon massively shoved for 5.8 million. Peter decided to bow out and Brandon showed pocket Tens. Aaron’s pocket 5s were crushed. He picked up some flush outs on the flop of T 8 4 as he held the 5 , but Brandon had improved to a set. The turn was the 9 and changed nothing. Not one to be greedy, Brandon said “C’mon, give me quads.” The river was the 3 , however, and Brandon picked up another pot, chipping up to 6.8 million. Aaron Keay finished in 49th place, earning $135,100.

Adam ‘Roothlus’ Levy shoved for 510k over the top of Ivan Demidov’s 130k opening raise. Ivan called, showing pocket Kings. Roothlus held AT off and would need help to survive. The board came T 6 3 3 2 and it was not enough.

Adam ‘Roothlus’ Levy finished in 48th place, earning $135,100.

After Andrew Brokos opened for 120k from the cutoff, Tommy Le shoved for 400k on the button. Andrew called the extra 280k, showing 64 off (I don’t make this stuff up, folks). Tommy’s A6 suited had Andrew dominated, but the board came Q 5 3 3 2 giving Andrew the straight on the river to take the pot.

Nhan ‘Tommy’ Le finished in 47th place, earning $135,100.

On a flop of K 8 8, David Saab moved in and Nikolay Losev looked him up. David’s pocket Aces were crushed by Nikolay’s 86 suited (trip 8s). The last two were T 3 and no help to David.

David Saab finished in 46th place, earning $135,100.

On ESPN Feature Table 1, Phil Hellmuth shoved for 405k utg and Andrew Rosskamm looked him up. Phil’s A Q was racing against Andrew’s pocket Jacks. The flop was K 4 3 and didn’t help much. The turn was the T , which gave Phil the nut flush draw and a gutshot, needing a or Jack to stay alive. After what seemed like an interminable delay as ESPN filmed Phil holding his wife’s hands in the front row of the audience, the dealer rivered the 2 .

Phil Hellmuth, Jr. finished in 45th place, earning $154,400.

Level 25 came to a close and 44 remaining players were sent away from the felt for a 20-minute break. Play will resume about 5:07pm

Nikolay Losev has taken the chip lead with 10.1 million. Gert Andersen has dropped to second with 8.7 million. Albert Kim is third with 7.34 million and Brandon Cantu is fourth with 6.8 million.

Down to 50.

Play has tightened and we have lost only three players in the last hour:

Alan Gould picked up a couple ladies and put in a reraise to 400K. Albert Kim then made it 1.1 million, isolating the action with Gould. Gould would then move all in. Kim would call the additional million to table A-A, out in front of Gould's queens. A board full of baby cards meant Kim's aces held, eliminating Gould from the big one. Alan Gould is out in 53rd, earning $135,100.

Mark Ketteringham started the day with the chip lead. He then ran his A-K into the ground, leavind him with less than 1 million chips.

After being blinded down to just 600K, Ketteringham got it all in on the button with J 8. He was looked up by Gert Anderson in the BB, who held A-Q. Anderson picked up a queen on the flop, which would be enough to take care of Ketteringham. Mark Ketteringham has been eliminated in 52nd-place, good fro $135,100.

Gert Anderson is now nearing 10 million.

Alfredo Fernandez fell after a confrontation with the Mouth. Mike Matusow got the action started with a rais to 110K. Fernandez came over the top with his last 600K. Matusow made the call with A Q . Fernandez tabled J-10 and had some catching up to do. After the board ran K-6-6-4-A, Matusow's queens up was enough to bounce Fernandez. Alfredo Fernandez is out in 51st, good for $135,100 at the payouts desk.

"They can't beat me!" Matusow declared, as he began adding to his stack, which is now over the 3 million mark.

Nikolay Losev raised to 110k and Chris Klodnicki called from the big blind. On the flop of 9 6 6, both checked. The turn was the 5 and Chris fired 225k. Nikolay raised to half a million and Chris called the extra 275k. River was the K . Chris checked and Nikolay tanked, counted out a bet of 500k, then checked behind. Chris showed pocket 7s (both black) for two pair. Nikolay showed A 6 for trip 6s to take the pot, chipping up to 7.8 million.

Tiffany Michelle continues to accumulate chips, lately at the expense of the player on her right, Cristian Dragomir of Romania.

First, Michelle limped UTG to see a cheap flop with Toni Judet and Dragomir. The dealer fanned out a 9-7-9 flop and Michelle would call 75K from Dragomir. The 4 turned and Dragomir saw his bet of 100K raised to 200K. Dragomir then decided to repop it to 400K, at which time Tiffany moved all in. Dragomir chose to fold, still holding on to more than 2 million chips.

Then it was Tiffany getting Dragomir to lay down on a Q 9 10 3 4 board. Tiffany called 275K from Dragomir on the flop, then check-raised to 525K after the turn. Tiffany would move all in after the river and Dragomir would finally let it go, leaving himself with just over 1 million chips.

Chino Rheem and Craig Marquis bothe went to a Q 9 3 flop. Marquis would check-call 100K from Rheem. Both checked the turn, after another 9 fell. When the river brought the 6, Marquis again check-called Rheem, 300K this time. Rheem showed Q-J, but was outkicked by the K-Q of Marquis. Rheem switches places with Marquis; Rheem is at 2.5 million, while Marquis is at about 3.2 million.

On a Queen-high flop, Nikolay Losev shoved over the top of Geert Jans’ bet. Geert called all-in, showing pocket Aces. Nikolay held QJ suited for top pair and was trailing. It appeared Geert was headed for the double-up, but a cruel Queen fell on the turn giving Nikolay trips. Nothing but an Ace on the river would save Geert, but the river was a 9. Geert Jans finished in 62nd place, earning $115,800.

Thomas ‘Thunder’ Keller shoved his last ~150k and got looked up by Jeremy Joseph, who held 76 suited. Thomas was ahead with KQ off, but the board came J 6 3 T T and Jeremy paired his 6 on the turn, silencing the Thunder. Thomas Keller finished in 61st place, earning $115,800.

Kelly Kim made it 90k up front and Phil Hellmuth called from the big blind. Flop was K 6 5 rainbow. Phil bet 90k and Kelly called. Turn was a Queen and Phil checked. Kelly bet 150k and Phil tanked, then finally called. River was another Queen. Kelly bet 250k and Phil called. Kelly showed AK off for Kings-up. Phil mucked and Kelly took the pot.

Mike ‘the Mouth’ Matusow got his chips all in the middle and got action from Jeremy Gaubert. Mike’s pocket Jacks were ahead of Jeremy’s AK off. Then the flop came J 8 8 giving the Mouth a full house and something to holler about. Jeremy was dead to two runners that never materialzed and he was busted. Mike chipped up to 2.4 million.

Jeremy Gaubert finished in 58th place, earning $115,800.

Level 24 ended at 2:15 pm and 57 players were sent on a 20-minute break. Gert Andersen is the chip leader with 9 million chips. Brandon Cantu is second with 6.2 million. Nikolay Losev is third with 5.9 million and Albert Kim is fourth with 5.6 million.

Level 25 kicked off at about 2:35pm. Antes 5k, Blinds 20k/40k.

Jeremy Joseph, who led the field at the end of days 3 & 4, found himself short and shoved for ~500k with pocket 5s. He ran into the pocket Jacks of current chip leader Gert Andersen. The Jacks held up. Jeremy Joseph finished in 57th place, earning $115,800.

On a flop of J 7 4 , Eric Bamer shoved and got looked up by Jonathan Plens. Eric held K T for the flush draw. Jonathan’s pocket Aces were way ahead. Eric’s hopes were hanging on a club, but the last two were 5 J and Eric Bamer finished in 56th place, earning $115,800.

Alex Outhred shoved for 525k after Chris Klodnicki opened for 110k. Chris looked him up, showing pocket 9s. Alex held AK off. The board came K 9 6 giving Alex a pair, but giving Chris a set. Alex would need two runners to survive, but the board blanked out and he was busted.

Alex Outhred finished in 54th place, earning $135,100.

Over on feature table 1, James McManus got all in against Andrew Rosskamm on a flop of T 9 3 rainbow. Andrew held pocket Aces and the lead. James held QJ offsuit for the open-ender. He needed a King or 8 to survive, but the last two were 2 A and Andrew took the pot. James McManus of Dublin, Ireland, finished in 71st place, earning $96,500.

After Suresh Prabhu raised to 90k from the button, Victor Ramdin shoved from the big blind. Suresh called, showing pocket 5s. Victor held A 8 . The board came K J 2 8 9 giving Victor the lead on the turn with a pair, then the flush on the river to cement the double-up.

A few hands later, Victor called from the middle and Terry Lade shoved from the cutoff. Victor called, showing A K . Terry held pocket Kings and it was the classic race scenario. The flop of T 6 2 gave Victor more outs with the flush draw. Then the Q h hit the turn giving Terry the set. River was the K and no help to Victor. Terry doubled up to almost 2 million. Victor was left with a bit over 300k.

Over on feature table 2, three players saw the flop of A J 8. Sean Davis bet 200k and both Gert Andersen and Mark Ketteringham called. Turn was a King. Sean bet 900k, Mark moved in, and both Gert and Sean called all-in. Big-stack Mark was actually behind with AK off for top two pair. Sean held pocket 8s for the set and Gert held QT suited for the Broadway straight. River was a 5 and Gert took the pot, chipping up to ~7 million chips, good for the chip lead. Mark was left with less than 1 million chips and Sean Davis finished in 69th place, earning $96,500.

On the river with a board of T 5 3 T 7, Albert Kim checked, David Saab bet 350k, and Albert raised to 1 million. David made the crying call, showing 64 for the straight. Albert showed T7 for the full house to chip up to almost 5.5 million.

A few hands later, Justin Scott shoved on a flop of J 9 4 and Albert Kim snap-called, showing pocket Aces. Justin’s A9 for middle pair was in bad shape, needing one of three 9s to survive. The last two were blanks and Albert continued to stack chips, closing in on 7 million.

Over on feature table 1, Phil Hellmuth raised to 90k and Allen Kennedy called from the button. Both checked the flop of J 9 2 . Turn was the 8 and Phil bet 60k. Allen called. River was the A and Phil bet 175k. Allen shoved for ~500k and Phil called. Allen showed QT off for the turned straight. Phil mucked.

Victor Ramdin shoved his last ~160k and got looked up by Garrett Beckman in the big blind. Victor’s A 3 would need help against Garrett’s pocket Jacks. The flop was a mix of good news and bad news for Victor: K J 5 gave Garrett the set, but gave Victor the flush draw. The last two were 5 8 , however, missing all Victor’s outs. Garrett took the pot. Victor Ramdin finished in 64th place, earning $96,500.

Gert Andersen is the chip leader with 7.2 million. Albert Kim is next with 6.8 million.

Here is the official statement on the reversal of Phil Hellmuth's penalty:

"This morning Phil Hellmuth met with Jack Effel, WSOP Tournament Director, Howard Greenbaum, Harrah's Regional Vice President for Specialty Gaming, and Jeffrey Pollack, Commissioner of the WSOP. Based on that meeting and an official review of the situation, it was decided that the penalty imposed on Mr. Hellmuth at the conclusion of play last night was excessive.

"Warnings and penalties are intended to correct inappropriate behavior and our rulings should be as fair as possible, given the circumstances," said Pollack. "In this instance, the punishment did not fit the crime."

"Phil has now been warned and put on notice in a way that he never has been," Pollack added. "

Sunday, 13th of July 2008 01:00 PM

Play resumed at 12:15pm with Level 24: Ante 4k, Blinds 15k/30k.

Phil Hellmuth was supposed to start the day serving a one orbit penalty. Near the end of day 5, he was berating another player and was given a warning to stop. When he didn’t stop, he was given a one-orbit penalty, just as play concluded. Phil’s table is the ESPN Feature table today and everyone was surprised when he sat down to play. We were told that the penalty was overturned. Media have been promised and are waiting for a formal statement on this.

In early action, Phil took a pot from James ‘not the author’ McManus. Phil (button) called a raise re-flop and called bets on the flop and turn. Both players checked the river with a board of Q J 7 5 K. Phil showed KQ and James mucked.

The second feature at the start of play today is Green-5, seating chip leader Mark Ketteringham, day 3 & 4 chip leader Jeremy Joseph, and Brandon Cantu. Dennis Phillips, in seat 6, moved all-in over the top of a raise from David Benefield in seat 5. All folded back to David, who did likewise and Dennis picked up the pot.

Thomas ‘Thunder’ Keller got his short-stack in early with pocket 9s with action from Aaron Gordon, who held AJ offsuit. The board blanked out and Thunder doubled up.

David ‘Chino’ Rheem (cutoff) raised and Bob Whalen (big blind) re-raised. Chino made the call to see the flop of 8 6 2 rainbow. Bob moved in for 450k. Chino tanked for a few minutes, then made the call. Bob held pocket Jacks and was way ahead. Chino showed 72 suited (I kid you not) for bottom pair. Once all the ESPN cameras were in place, the dealer burned and turned….a 7, giving Chino two pair. Bob needed a Jack, 8, or 6 to stay alive, but the river was a 3 and Bob Whalen finished in 79th place, earning $77,200. As Chino was dragging the pot, he said “Running good, Boys.”

David Saab raised to100k from the cutoff and Matt Matros moved in from the small blind for ~600k. David called, showing pocket 3s. Matt showed A7 off and it was race-time. The board came J J 6 9 4 and David’s pocket 3s held up to send Matt Matros home in 78th place, earning $77,200.

Mark Wilds ran his pocket 8s into the pocket 9s of Darus Suharto. Mark Wilds finished in 77th place, earning $77,200.

Chino Rheem and Dennis Phillips are in a dead heat for the chip lead with about 5 million chips each.

After five days of Main Event excitement, only 79 players still have a shot at winning the biggest title in the poker world. Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, and Hoyt Corkins didn't make the cut, and Mark Vos was eliminated on the last hand of the night. But Victor Ramdin, Phil Hellmuth, and Mike Matusow will be back on Day 6 to join chip leaders Mark Ketteringham, Andrew Brokos, and Tiffany Michelle. Only 27 players will be left standing at the end of Day 6. Join us Sunday at 12 p.m. PDT for live coverage from the tournament floor.
