After four long days of poker, Day 1 of the Main Event is over. The final flight of the Day 1s began with 2,461 entrants - nearly twice the number of players on Day 1A and more than double the entrants on 1B. After five levels, 1,352 players remain. They will join the 1,026 1C survivors on Wednesday for a packed Day 2B.

In total, 3,629 players made it to Day 2. Last year's Main Event champ, Jerry Yang, isn't among them. He ran pocket Tens into Jacks bust just before the end of the night.

Cyndy Violette didn't make it through the day either. She risked her last 7,950 on A-K suited, and Jan Skampa made a tough call with pocket dueces. The ducks held up when the board ran out Ten high, ending Cyndy's Main Event.

Layne Flack raised to 1,350 pre-flop, and Christian Oman paid to see the J 9 8 flop. Flack checked the action to Oman, who made it 1,800 to go. Layne shoved, and Oman snap-called with the nuts. Flack's K J needed to make a flush to beat Oman's Q T for the straight. Back-to-back s meant Flack was out of luck and out of chips.

Fabrice Soulier moved in on an A K 7 A board with A-5, but trip Aces wasn't enough against his opponent's 7-7 for 7s full. A 4 on the river didn't save Soulier. Shane "Shaniac" Schleger is out after running into quad Aces. Can Kim Hua and Anthony Chatelain were also late casualties.

Poker School Online member Christina "SeekingPlumb" Schroeder also didn't make it through the day. She got her last chips in with top pair, top kicker, and looked good to double up against an opponent with the same pair and a lower kicker. But he made two pair on the river to end Schroeder's ME experience.

Jimmy "AirborneDaddy" Burgess is fairing better. He finished the day with 55,725 and will return on Wednesday with a better-than-average stack. Burgess picked up a sweet pot from Men "The Master" Nguyen that had the master cursing. On a 7 6 5 board with 8k already in the middle, Men bet out 6k, and Burgess made the call. Both checked down the 2 on the turn and the 8 on the river. Burgess tabled A-5 for middle pair top kicker, and Nguyen mucked with a few unprintable comments for Burgess. You know it's a good day when you have The Master swearing at you.

Steve Austin is the Day 1D chip leader with 149,000, but he is far behind the leaders from the previous three days. Mohamad Kowssarie is next with 146,000, followed by David Stucke with 140,525. Henning Granstad, with 242,950, is the overall chip leader after all four Day 1s.

Stay tuned for Day 2 action at 12:00 pm PDT on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Monday, 07th of July 2008 12:00 AM

Down to 1,503 with an hour left to play. If they don't eliminate people quickly, with Day 1C and D survivors combined, Day 2B will be even more crowded than today.

Todd Brunson did his part to make room by hitting the rail at the beginning of the level. Just before the break, Brunson got his short stack in with Aces. After a pre-flop raising war, an opponent called him with Kings, and Brunson's pocket rockets held up to double him to 26,000. But shortly after the break, Brunson risked it all on a 6 4 2 6 board, tabling 6 5 for trips. It was an easy call for Tom Braband, who held A J for the nut flush. Braband is up to 110,000 while Brunson is down for the count.

Dario Minieri and his scarf won't be making it deep this year. As usual, the Harry Potter of poker had been up and down all day. He raised to 1,600 from the SB, and Cedric Kolstad called to see the 7 2 2 flop. Minieri bet out 2,300, and Kolstad called again. Dario moved in for his last 7,500 after the T turned. Minieri's Q Q was ahead of Kolstad's A T on the turn, but Cedric had plenty of outs. And he hit one with the T on the river. Trip tens for Koldstad, and an early exit for Minieri. No ME cash, but he can't be too disappointed with bracelet he picked up in the $2,500 Six-Handed NLHE event.

Melissa Hayden got her last chips in pre-flop with pocket Tens and was off to the races with an opponent's A-J. The 7 7 5 flop was harmless, and she was in good shape for a double up after a Queen on the turn. But a cruel Ace on the river put an end to her tournament.

Steve Austin has the chip lead with 140,000, followed by Dylan Linde with 135,000.

Sunday, 06th of July 2008 11:00 PM

The remaining 1,620 players have just returned from a 20-minute break to begin the last level of the night. Blinds are at 200/400 with an ante of 50. Play is slowing down even more as everyone knows they only have to survive two more hours to make it to Day 2. And since Day 2B is on Wednesday, for many, a bust means going home and back to work, while staying alive means three more days of living the dream in Vegas.

Defending champ update: with J 5 4 on the board, the action was checked to Jerry Yang, who tossed in more than 10k, several times the size of the pot. Everyone folded, and Yang warned the table that next time he'd have a monster.

A while later, action was checked to Yang UTG, who bet 1,200 on a Q J 7 flop. The button called, while the BB let them go heads up. The turn came 3, and Yang led out for 3k. The button didn't think long before mucking. Even though he didn't use the overbet, Yang showed a monster, A-A, and dragged another pot. Yang is now up near 45k.

After making his first final table in Event 5, $1,000 NLHE w/Rebuys, Jonathan "FatalTerror" Aguiar is looking to add a Main Event cash to his poker resume. That might be a little tougher now. Aguiar was sitting behind about 15k and picked up K K.

Aguiar got his opponent to commit his last 11,100 chips on a T 6 3 flop, then turned over his cowboys. His opponent tabled T T for top set. Two bricks fell on the remaining streets, and Aguiar is now left with just a few thousand chips.

Recently busted: Michael "Grinder" Mizrachi, Karina Jett, Leroy Le, and Doug Lee.

Sunday, 06th of July 2008 10:00 PM

The field is down to 1,683, and the anxiety is rising.

Sarah Bilney is among the casualties of the last level. Bilney raised to 1,400, and only one player called to see the T 6 4 flop. Her opponent, Rob Roseman, bet out 2,100, and Bilney raised to 7,500. Not to be outdone, Roseman repopped to 18k, and Bilney called.

Roseman shoved after a 5 came on the turn, and Bilney made the call all in. She tabled pocket Kings, but her overpair was behind against Roseman's 4-4 for the flopped set. Sarah needed a King on the river to stay alive, but instead, the case 4 spiked, making quads to end her day.

Chris Ferguson found himself down to just 5k, thanks in large part to dropping a big pot to a player with pocket cowboys.

A few hands later, Ferguson moved the rest of his stack in on the turn, his 7-7 having found a set on the A Q 7 3 board. The bad news for Ferguson was that his opponent's K 6 had flopped the nut flush.

Jesus needed to pair the board and fill up on the river. No such luck, and Ferguson is gone.

John "Razor" Phan picked up not one, but two gold bracelets this year. A deep run in the Main Event would immortalize his 2008 WSOP performance. Sadly, that isn't going to happen. Phan called off all but his last 3,500 to see his opponent show A-A on a K 5 5 A T board.

When Phan looked down at Q-Q, he risked his remaining chips, and picked up a caller with A-K. The Ace in the door effectively ended the race, and with it, Phan's impressive series. Maybe he should have gone back to "no look poker."

Men "The Master" Nguyn has been having some difficulty since dinner time. He bet a 9 9 X flop, and his opponent moved in on him, making it nearly 20k to go. Nguyn called off half his stack, tabling pocket Aces. Not good enough against his tablemate's K-9. The turn and river blanked, and Nguyen was down to around 20,000.

A few hands later, Men raised to 800 from the SB, and Rafe Furst made it 2,500 on the button. With both big names in the pot, the ESPN camera team instantly swarmed the table, sticking boom mics in the players' faces. Nguyen paid to see the K J 4 flop, then fired out 3,000.

Furst slumped in his chair and spent several minutes deep in the tank before moving all in for around 15,000. The Master counted out his chips, sat back in his chair, and stared at them for awhile. Then he tossed them into the muck, and Furst scooped the pot while the ESPN crew moved on disappointedly.

A few tables over, a short-stacked player moved all in, and another player flat called. Bryan Micon only thought for a moment before shoving over top. The second player shrugged and mucked his Jacks face up.

Micon showed down pocket Aces to the short-stack's 9-9. The board ran out Q J 5 4 T, giving Bryan the pot. As the loser gathered his things, Micon pulled a Neverwin Poker hat out of his bag and gave it to him as a parting gift.

Beth Shak, sitting two seats from Micon, was shaking her head as the hand went down and commented to me that she was surprised how badly the guy with Jacks had played the hand. Had he raised or shoved rather than flat called, he would have been pot committed by the time Micon moved in, and with a Jack on the board, would have tripled up. That's the beauty of the Main Event.

Shawn Cunix is the current chip leader with 145,000, followed by Mohamad Kowssarie with 118,000.  Aaron Kanter is next with 112,000.

The last Day 1 dinner break is done, and everyone is back to business. The atmosphere seems even more serious now that players are focused on making it to Day 2. To do that, they'll have to survive two more levels. They're currently in the middle of Level 4, with blinds at 150/300 and an ante of 25.

Just before dinner, Doyle Brunson made his departure. On a 7 5 5 board, Shrini Kelkar bet 2,000, and Texas Dolly responded by shoving for 7,925. Kelkar tabled pocket Ladies for the overpair, and Brunson held 6-4 for the open-ended draw. The Ace on the turn didn't do it, and the 7 on the river was just one off. Ladies and gentlemen, Doyle Brunson has left the building.

Robert Williamson III also took his dinner break a few minutes early. Justin St. John raised to 800, and Williamson called to see an A T 2 flop. St. John bet 1,800 into Williamson, who made it 3,600 to go. Then Justin repopped, and Robert called all in, tabling A-K. Top pair wasn't good enough for the lead against St. John's pair of ducks for bottom set. Blanks on the turn and river sent Williamson home.

Maria Ho saw her chips stack dwindle to just under 4K.  A raise from the button triggered Ho to move the rest of her chips in holding 9-9.  The player on the button would make the call with K J.  Ho's hopes of repeating her impressive 2007 Main Event run were shattered after a king showed up on the flop.  Maria failed to find a 9 on the turn or river, meaning her 2008 series was done.

Scary board, bro.

With more than 10K in the pot and 8 Q 10 8 7 on the board, Eugene Todd watched his opponent toss out three orange chips, a bet of 15,000.  Todd dipped into the tank, first grabbing his things and getting up from his chair as if he was ready to leave, then sitting back down and playing with the 12,000 chips he had behind.

"Doesn't get any worse than this," said Todd as he tossed his hand in the muck.  He looked across the table at Ray Henson, who was observing the hand.  "I flopped the joint.  What are you going to do?"

The surviving 1,893 players are now off to a much-needed dinner break. Today began with a whopping 2,461, and in six hours of play, only 568 players were eliminated. Guess a $10,000 buy in makes people a tad more cautious.

But $10k is nothing to some pros, and many made their exit in the last level. Recent eliminations include:

David Woo
Paul "Eskimo" Clark
George Danzer
Vinny Vinh
Allen Kessler
Fred Goldberg
Allen Le
Mats Rahmn

Phil Ivey's disappointing 2008 WSOP has come to an end. Ivey watched more than half of his chips disappear after he turned the nut flush, only to fall to a full house when the board paired on the river. A short while later, Ivey would run into big slick. He was eliminated after he couldn't top Ace-high. No bracelet this year means quite a hit to Ivey's bank account. It's rumored that he had nearly $2 million in prop bets that he would pick up some gold WSOP bling this summer.

Tom Schneider got it in with A-Q on an Ace-high flop. Mark Newhouse made the call, having flopped an open ended straight flush draw. Newhouse was at least kind enough to do Schneider in on the turn rather than the river. Newhouse found the high side of his straight on the turn, and Schneider was drawing dead.

Mickey "Mouse" Mills pulled up a seat to the right of Jennifer Harman to start the day. It wasn't a good one for Mills. Mickey found himself all in and at risk holding J-J, hoping to dodge not one, but two players. One tabled A-J, the other turned over A-Q. Mills saw the A-Q catch up on the flop when the board ran out Q 7 6 9 6. Mills couldn't find the one-outer, and he's gone.

Jennifer Harman is having a better day in her seat. After a 8 7 6 flop, Harman was one of two players to call a bet of 1,500. Another 8 on the turn and Harman would move her last 12k in over the top of a 7k bet. The third player would get out of the way, and the original bettor called.

Harman showed T-9 for the big straight. Her opponent's 5-4 was only good for the low end. The river was a meaningless 3, and Harman doubled through. She now holds onto more than 35k in chips.

In the Brasilia Room, Amir Vahedi was able to double up in the level's closing minutes. Vahedi would flat call a raise to 800 pre-flop. After the dealer fanned out 10 5 3 on the board, action was checked to Vahedi. Amir made it 1,600, and his opponent came over the top for 4k total. Vahedi decided it was time to shove and his opponent called.

Vahedi tabled K-K, way out in front of his opponent's A-10 for top pair and kicker. The turn and river couldn't have brought bigger bricks than the 4 and 6 that were tabled. Vahedi's K-K was good, and the former Main Event final tabler is just under double the starting stack, sitting behind almost 40k.

Poker School Online member Christina Schroeder is also doing well. Known as SeekingPlumb, she redeemed sponsorship points to win a buy in to her first WSOP event. Her table is a bit thrown off by a skilled female player, and she's taken advantage of their confusion to chip up to around 30k. Jimmy Burgess is also still looking strong. Along with Schroeder and Burgess, Steve "nvflag" D'Argenio is also sponsored by PSO today. Good luck to all of them!

Brad Tisdale is the dinner-time chip leader with 112,000.  Victor Ramdin, Carlos Mortensen, and Antonio Esfandiari are also high up on the leader board.

The action will resume around 8:30 pm PDT.

Jennifer Tilly found herself sitting behind just half her starting stack, but picked up a nice pot with her A K. She picked up the nuts by the turn, thanks to the J 2 10 Q board. Even though she didn't need it, she found a diamond on the river, improving her nut straight to the nut flush. Tilly was over 16k, to the delight of the ESPN cameras hovering over her, but the extra chips didn't last too long. Tilly's already on her way home.

And it was a Poker School Online member who did the honors! Jimmy Burgess, aka "AirborneDaddy", wasn't intimidated at all when he found himself sitting at a table with Ms. Tilly, Men "The Master" Nguyen, and Rafe Furst.

Burgess looked down to see pocket Tens and raised from middle position. Tilly called, and another player made it 1,200 to go. Burgess flat called, and Tilly shoved for around 8,000. The third player got out of the way, and AirborneDaddy made the call to see Tilly's A-K suited. The board blanked for Tilly, ending her tournament.

Burgess, who redeemed PSO sponsorship points to earn his seat in the Main Event, also took a nice pot from Men Nguyen earlier, turning a straight and trapping Nguyen into calling him all the way down. Maybe PSO can teach The Master a thing or two. Burgess is up to around 50k.  Nice work!

In the Brasilia Room, Antonio Esfandiari has chipped up to more than 75k. He just put the boots to another player, his 9h 7 flopping the nut straight on the T 8 6 flop. He would get a player to call off the rest of his stack with Q-Q. After the dealer ran out a T on the turn and Ace on the river, Esfandiari's straight was still good. He pulled in the pot and Layne Flack, having caugh flack from Antonio earlier for his choice of starting hands, made a point to show the table that Esfandiari was playing raised pots with 9-7.

The moment the field has been waiting for is finally here - the massive prize pool has been announced. The 6,844 total entrants have created a prize pool of $64,333,600. The top 666 players will be paid, with minimum casher earning $21,230 and the final tablers guaranteed a payday of $900,670. The 2008 Main Event winner will take home a staggering $9,119,517, almost $1 million more than Jerry Yang took home last year.

Yang is doing his best to pick up some of this year's prize money as well. Yang found himself short early. Then he was able to double up after his 10 7 ended up being the bigger of two flopped flushes. A while later, Yang would get it in with Aces after a raggy flop. He was called by an opponent with K-K. Yang would fade the two-outer and chip back up to 15k.

Victor Ramdin wasn't having such a good day at the felt until he started burning up, literally. He just doubled up an opponent when he got involved in another big pot. A tablemate moved in, and Ramdin headed into the tank to contemplate making the call. He was jolted out of his thought process when a waitress accidentally spilled scalding hot coffee down his arm. Ramdin jumped up in pain, and the waitress looked like she might faint. Though the floor came over and offered to call security, Ramdin shrugged it off and got back to the hand. He kissed his chips as he threw them into the pot, and moments later his opponent hit the rail. "I didn't mind after I won the pot," said Ramdin, still rubbing his arm minutes later. After eliminating another player, Ramdin was up to 80k, and since then, he's built his stack to 107,000 and taken over the chip lead.

I stopped to watch the action over on table Green 11, but I wouldn't have enough Advil to last the day if I stayed too long. I sure hope the players there all have iPods - Jean-Robert Bellande and Teddy "The Iceman" Monroe are sharing the felt and competing for talk time.

A herd of players is filtering back into the Amazon and Brasilia Rooms as the second break of the day has come to an end. Players spent most of the last hour in the hallways or at the Poker Kitchen.

Some players that didn't survive to take the break:

John Murphy
Raymond Davis
Andy Bloch
Jose Canseco
David Wells

Andy Bloch got the rest of his chips in on a Q J 8 Q board holding 10-9, having flopped the nut straight. Problem is, the Q on the turn filled up his opponent, who tabled J-J. Bloch was drawing dead.

Former MLB stars Jose Canseco and David Wells both exited in the second level. Canseco couldn't recover after his K-K was outflopped by the 3-3 of his opponent, who found bottom set. Canseco would ship the rest of his chips with A-10, only to be eliminated after he couldn't top A-K. Wells held A-2 on a 5-4-2-2 board. He would get it all in, but found a caller with 5-2, for fives full. The river bricked, and Well's trip deuces weren't enough to save the lefty.

New level, with 150/300 blinds.

Who's da Men?

There were more than 7,000 chips in the pot and J 5 9 8 on the board. Action was checked to Men "The Master" Nguyen, who put in a bet of 3,000. His opponent raised all in for about 7,500. Nguyen would give it a minute, before deciding to make the call.

Nguyen's A 4 turned out to be in the lead, after his opponent turned over K 10. The river bricked, and the Master's Ace high held up. He is now up to 30k.

Chris Ferguson is chipping up as well. With A K 5 J A on the board, Jesus watched his opponent call his bet of nearly 12k on the river. Jesus quickly showed J-J, having rivered a full house. His opponent mucked, allowing Ferguson to inch his way toward the 30k mark.

Some others aren't fairing as well.

After chipping up to a respectable 27k, Forrest Griffin found himself in a big pot with his new buddy, Johnny Chan. Griffin called raises from Chan on each street of a K 8 2 8 J board. After calling the last 5k on the river, Griffin showed just J-6. Chan turned over A-K and left the new UFC champ with just a few thousand chips.

Griffin shipped the rest of his stack on the next hand. Griffin pushed his K-9 after a Q J 3 flop. He was called by a player who flopped top pair with his Q-8. Griffin was looking for a King or Ten on the last streets, but didn't get. At least now he has time to ice down and get some rest.

Annie Duke is done as well. Duke was crippled after dropping a 30k pot to a player who flopped top two. Duke took her last 5k and moved it in with T-T after a J 4 2 flop. She picked up a caller who tabled Q-Q. The turn brought another Queen, giving Duke's opponent a set and leaving her drawing dead.

The board is showing 6,844 total entrants for the Main Event, but we're still waiting on the official numbers.

Phil is here.

While he may never live down the car accident preceding his arrival at last year's Main Event, Phil Hellmuth isn't letting that embarrassing moment stop him from making another grand entrance. Hellmuth arrived in a convoy, and he and his lady escorts were dressed in military garb. He walked the red carpet and made his way to his seat at the ESPN feature table.

If he would have shown up earlier, he could have played a little more with Chuck Liddell. Not long after returning from the first break, Liddell got knocked out -. not something that happens to him often.

Fellow fighter Forrest Griffin is fairing a little better. He and Johnny Chan have commanded the ESPN cameras for the better part of the morning, each getting involved in quite a few big pots. Recently, Forrest received a river call with K 8 5 6 6 on the board. The Champ showed K-6, having rivered Kings full of 6s. His opponent flashed a King, before tossing his hand in the muck. Griffin is nearing 30k.

Chan is also off to a good start. Not only is his table pounding All In energy drinks and attracting the largest rail crowd in the room, but the two-time Main Event winner is well over 30k in chips.

In the Brasilia Room, Sam Simon saw his day come to an end.

The Simpson's co-creator was down to just 3k and moved the rest of his chips in with J-9 after a J 6 2 flop. He picked up a call from a player who tabled Q 9 . Simon was alive after the 4 bricked on the turn, but he saw his Main Event window close after the Q fell on fifth street, pairing his opponent.

The capacity crowd has the Amazon and Brasilia Rooms packed, and players are also at tables crammed into every available inch of the main casino. The Brasilia room is home to quite a few big names, many of them seated side by side. Sam Simon is seated with Wynn Classic champ Chris Moore. Tom Schneider is on the immediate right of Mark Newhouse. And Allen Cunningham is side-by-side with a cowboy-hatted Brett "Gank" Jungblut.

Allen Cunningham was one of five players who paid 300 to see the 2 2 8 flop. The second player to act would make it 1,050 to go. Only Cunningham called. The 2 fell on the turn. Cunningham called another bet, 2,200 this time. After the 7 rivered, it was going to be 4,000 to show his hand. Again Cunningham called. His opponent wasn't happy with his hand anymore, and he slowly showed J-J. Cunningham saw it was safe to show his K-K and scooped a pot worth more than 16,000.

Tim Vance flopped the nuts but couldn't hold on to the lead. He raised preflop with A-K, and Ray Henson called from the button. Q J 10 on the board, and Vance decided to check-call 500 from Henson. Vance checked the 4 turn as well. Henson made it 1,200, and Vance reraised to 4,000. Henson called to see the 2 river. Vance checked one last time, only to see Henson put him all in. Vance made the call, tabling Broadway. Henson showed A 3, having rivered a flush. An unhappy Vance dropped a few curse words and headed for the door.

Shirley Williams was sneaking onto the tournament floor, hoping to deliver hand lotion to her son David, seated at Brasilia table #28. She was just moments too late.

Williams had been very active early and found himself down to just 2,500 chips. He got the rest of those chips in post-flop with 9-9 on a K 9 6 board. He was called by a player with Q 10 and was able to dodge the spades, but couldn't get away from the runner-runner straight after the dealer ran out the 7 and 8 . William's set was no good, and he was gone before mom could give him his lotion.

Also in the Brasilia Room:

Allen Kessler
Jose Canseco
Ryan Young
Layne Flack
Victor Ramdin
Amir Vahedi

Clear the hallways. Players are leaving for their first break of the day. Play will resume at 2:30.

Sunday, 06th of July 2008 01:00 PM

The last of the Day 1 Main Event flights is underway. Those who procrastinated, or just wanted to start as late as possible, have braved the stampede of dreamers to take their shots at the big one.

The four Day 1 flights is evidence of poker's continuing popularity. These days, the only competition growing as fast as poker is Mixed Martial Arts. The UFC is on display today, headlined by the "The Iceman" at the feature table. No, not Teddy "The Iceman" Monroe. It's Chuck Liddell, former UFC champ, attracting more than his share of fans at the ESPN arena.

Not far away is another UFC champ. Griffin is just a day removed from upsetting Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Today, he has a different champ trying to knock him out.

A swollen and bruised Griffin finds himself at the same table as two-time Main Event winner Johnny Chan. Chan gave Griffin a river brush up just to show him he's not in the Octagon. Griffin would check call 1k from Johnny on the river with Q J 8 10 8 on the board to table Q-J, having flopped top two. Chan would turn over K-K, having counterfeited Griffin on the river for a better two pair. "You had me til the river, Forrest," said Chan as he stacked his winnings.

A few tables over, Maria Ho has been shown some early respect. Two players called her raise pre-flop to see three rags fall. A bet of 1,050 after the flop chased out one of the Hyman brothers. After a King fell on the turn, Maria's bet of 2,200 caused her opponent to muck T-T face up. Maria happily added a few thousand to her stack.

Also in the main poker room, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Phil Laak, Mark Seif, Steve Dannenmann, John "Razor" Phan, and Men "The Master" Nguyen.

Level 1: Blinds 50/100. Players will start with 20,000 chips. Levels will last two hours.

The Main Event is off to an explosive start, and the final Day 1 is sure to be the largest and most star-studded yet. By the end of Day 1C, the nearly 2,000 entrants had been whittled to around 1,000 surviors. They will join those who make it through Day 1D on Wednesday for Day 2B. Poker pros like David Singer and Evelyn Ng climbed the leader board on Day 1C. Which famous faces will join them from Day 1D? Be sure to stay right here at PokerPages.com as we bring you all of the live wire-to-wire action from the 2008 WSOP Main Event!

Live coverage of the Main Event - Day 1D begins Sunday, July 6th.
