2008 World Series of Poker - Event #51 - $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. - Final Table
Wednesday, 02nd of July 2008 03:30 AM
Immediately after our last post, we had an all in.
During Stud-8, Schaaf would see Hang call down to sixth street. By that time, the rest of Hang's stack was in the middle.
Hang - (A-7) J-2-7-7 Schaaf - (10-8) 6-8-9-8
Hang picked up trip sevens, only to run them into the trip eights of Schaaf. The railbirds leaned in to get a better look as both players would squeeze the last down card. Hang could only find the 5 , missing his boat. Schaaf's trip eights had held.

Tommy Hang earns $158,933 as the runner-up.
James Schaaf is our Event 51 winner. He will take $256,412 back to Torrance, Calif., with him, along with a gold bracelet. Not bad for his first trip to the WSOP.
Wednesday, 02nd of July 2008 02:30 AM
Hang entered heads-up with a 2-1 chip lead.
After an early Razz hand, Schaaf was able to show A-2-3-5-7 to beat Hang's 10-8-5-3 board and pull even.
In consecutive Stud hands, Hang reclaimed the lead, only to see Schaaf pick up the nut flush to again pull even. On the next hand, Schaaf had a couple kings on the board and split eights for two pair. Hang would flash his kings in the hole before mucking his hand.
It has been all Schaaf since.
Shaaf is taking down more than his share of pots since claiming the chip lead. He now has a big advantage over Hang, his 2.5 million to Hang's 500,000.

Last lady standing out in 4th.
Not long after dropping a big Stud-8 pot to the heart flush of Tommy Hang, Esther Rossi found herself all in and at risk.
Hold'em time and Phil raises from the button. A reraise from Rossi is worth the rest of her stack. Hellmuth makes the call.
It's the K-8 of Hellmuth against the J 9 of Rossi. Neither player could connect on the 2-4-4-10-A board, meaning Hellmuth's king-high was enough to take the pot.
Esther Rossi's run ends in 4th, good for a $68,505 payday.
A few hands later, it was Phil's turn.
Down to just a few bets during the Omaha-8 round, Hellmuth limped from the SB. Tommy Hang raises from the BB and Phil calls with the rest of his stack.
Hellmuth shows A K 10 5 , trailing the Q Q 4 8 of Hang. Hellmuth would be looking to top a pair of queens, but the J-7-5-7-8 board didn't cooperate. Hellmuth could only muster a pair of fives and Hangs ladies hold up.
Phil Hellmuth won't be taking home #12 today, but he proved he's more than a one-trick, Hold'em pony. We'll forget that he was nearly the first elimination of the $50K HORSE.
Phil Hellmuth has been eliminated in 3rd-place. The Poker Brat will take home $93,168 for his three days at the tables. Heads-up play has begun. Hang holds a 2-1 chip lead over James Schaaf.

After Dollinger's elimination in 5th, Hellmuth was forced to lay down in a few big pots, earning him the title of short-stack.
First, James Schaaf would watch Hellmuth call him down during Stud-8, only to muck after Schaaf showed trip aces. On the following hand, Hellmuth was able to get away from his Q-9-7 on fifth street, leaving himself with 130K.
All is not bad for Hellmuth. It was Hold'em time again and a series of preflop raises found the Poker Brat all in vs. Schaaf.
Hellmuth tabled pocket eights, in great shape against the 9-4 of Schaaf. Q-Q-Q-x-K on the board and Hellmuth is back up over 200K.

Surprisingly, the HORSE tourney is catching up to the PLO final table.
First, it was Sam Silverman biting the dust.
It was Hold'em time. Silverman bet out and Jason Dollinger raised from the SB. Silverman looks down at 59K in chips and shoves the rest of his stack. Dollinger made the call.
After the cards are turned, it's Silverman's 3-3 dominated by the 7-7 of Dollinger. Silverman couldn't find any help in the 10-J-10-K-8 board. Dollinger's sevens held.
Sam Silverman's run ends in 6th-place. He will take home $42,966.
Dollinger couldn't quite put those chips to use.
During Stud, Dollinger picked up the K and completed. Tommy Hang has the 9 up and raises. Dollinger puts in a reraise and Hang calls. Dollinger would get the rest of his chips in on fifth street, his K-4-K board giving him kings and fours. Hang had picked up a 7 on fourth and quickly turned over 7-7 in the hole. Hang set of sevens held up after Dollinger failed to squeeze out a full house.
Jason Dollinger has been eliminated in 5th-place, worth $54,804.
Down to four-handed.
Tuesday, 01st of July 2008 10:30 PM
Team PokerStars lost its final table representative.
Victor Ramdin found himself short during the Stud round. Ramdin is dealt the 4 up and completes for the rest of his chips. He is called by both Sam Silverman, 2 , and James Schaar, 4 . Silverman folds his 2 3 7 board on fifth street. James Schaaf is able to improve to 10's and 2's, more than Ramdin could dig up.
Victor Ramdin has been eliminated in 7th-place, earning $32,992.
We'll see how many of the Team PokerStars railbirds hang around to watch the Phil show.
Chip counts:
Tommy Hang - 680,000 Phil Hellmuth - 400,000 James Schaaf - 392,000 Jason Dollinger - 346,000 Sam Silverman - 310,000 Esther Rossi - 166,000

Leave it to Phil Hellmuth to attract a crowd.
The final table has been moved to the feature table below the Milwaukee's Best Lounge. No less than 100 fans and poker pros have come to sweat Phil during his quest for #12.
Among those on the rail:
Chad Brown Humberto Brenes Bill Chen Alex Kravchenko Joe Hachem
Phil has one less player to hurdle.
Matt Grapenthien and Tommy Hang both limped in during some Omaha-8. Victor Ramdin checked his option. A K Q on the flop earned three checks. A on the turn triggered Grapenthien to bet. Hang raises and Ramdin gets out of the way. Grapenthien tosses in his last few chips and is all in.
K K 8 2 for Hang, good for kings full. Grapenthien shows A J 6 3 and would need to improve on his trip aces to survive. The river came 10 , not what Grapenthien was looking for. Hang's boat picks up the pot
Matt Grapenthien is gone in 8th-place, worth $27,511 at the payouts desk.
Chip counts:

Last two eliminations:
9th $22,031 Edward Brogdon 10th $22,031 Lonnie Heimowitz
Heimowitz shipped the rest of his stack in during Omaha-8. His A 6 7 Q was at risk vs. the 3 4 J J of Victor Ramdin. After the board ran out A K Q 10 5 , Ramdin rivered a heart flush, busting Heimowitz, consolodating the field to one table.
Brogdon was all in for his last 34K against Tommy Hang in a hand of Hold'em. Hang's 10 6 would improve to a heart flush with the 4 3 2 Q K board. Brogdon's 7-7 couldn't improve and we have our eight-handed final table.
We're now down to the final table. Players are on a one hour break. Play will resume at approx. 8:30.

Two-time bracelet winner Randy Holland was sent to the rail by Sam Silverman during a Razz round.
Holland was all in vs. Silverman and Phil Hellmuth on fourth street. By the time sixth street was dealt, Silverman bet Hellmuth off of his 8-J-2-10 board.
It was Holland's 5-10-K-3 against the 9-10-K-6 of Silverman. Holland showed 2-3-4-5-10, but couldn't survive after Silverman showed 3-4-5 in the hole, good for a 9 low.
Phillip Penn Sr. moved all in with K-9 on the board during a Stud hand. Matt Grapenthien made the call with 6-6 up. When all was said and done, Matt showed a full house and Penn was done.

Big stacks:
Phil Hellmuth - 440,000 Matt Grapenthien - 373,000 Tommy Hang - 370,000 Sam Silverman - 250,000 Jason Dollinger - 235,000 James Schaaf - 200,000 Victor Ramdin - 200,000 Esther Rossi - 143,000 Edward Brogdon - 112,000 Phillip Penn Sr. - 70,000
During some Omaha-8, Hellmuth bet out and Esther Rossi came along from the BB. 10 7 5 on the flop. Rossi checked to Phil, who bet out. Rossi called to see the 9 turn. This time Rossi bet and Phil called. After the 9 fell on the river, Phil would call another bet from Rossi. Esther showed A K -x-x in the hole. With no possible low, Phil mucked and Rossi scooped a nice one.
Esther is the last woman standing, but isn't a stranger to the WSOP. This is her 10th WSOP cash and Rossi's career tournament earnings total more than $160K.

Recent elims:
14th $11,070 Arash Ghaneian 15th $8,878 Keith Sexton 16th $8,878 Art Young 17th $6,686 Stephen Wolff
Short-stacked Stephen Wolff was able to survive a couple all ins, but ran into trouble during some Hold'em. After an A-8-3 flop, Wolff got it all in and Phillip Penn made the call. Wolff found top pair, holding A-5. Penn tabled 8s3s, having hit bottom two. Bricks on fourth and fifth street meant Penn's two pair was good and Wolff was gone.
Keith Sexton lost a bunch of chips during Stud, when Hellmuth's kings in the hole held up. Sexton would then survive an all in vs. Hellmuth after his 8-7 low chopped with Phil's sixes and fives during Stud-8.
After finding a new seat, Sexton ran into Steve Diano during Razz. By fifth, Sexton was all in with (A-2) 4-7-J, trailing the (5-8) 3-A-4 of Diano. Sexton could only improve to a 10-7, giving the pot to Diano, before heading to the payouts desk.
Hellmuth holds onto the chip lead and has some supporters. In addition to the fans on the rail, his parents and wife have arrived to help cheer Phil on to bracelet #12 and his first outside of Hold'em.
Chip counts:

Day Three of Event 51, $1,500 HORSE, is underway. We're not down to a final table yet. Phil Hellmuth leads a group of 20 players, each geared up for a long run today, as we're set to play down to just one.
Structure:
Hold'em - SB: 3,000; BB:6,000 Omaha-8 - SB: 3,000; BB:6,000 Razz - Ante: 1,500; BI: 2,000; Complete: 6,000 Stud - Ante: 1,500; BI: 2,000; Complete: 6,000 Stud-8 - Ante: 1,500; BI: 2,000; Complete: 6,000
Eliminations:
18th $6,686 Hoyt Verner 19th $6,686 Jens Voertmann 20th $6,686 Edmond Tonnellier
Jens Voertmann, winner of Event 22, $3,000 HORSE, went down in 19th during Stud-8 play. With 9-8-10 on the board, Voertmann check-raised his last 24K in vs. Stephen Wolff, who was showing A 9 J . Wolff quickly called, prompting Voertmann to ask if he, "had the flush." Wolff simply nodded and turned over 7 8 in the hole. Voertmann turned over his J-7, having made a jack-high straight. Not enough to top Wolff's flush, Voertmann will only capture the one HORSE title this year.
Hoyt Verner got it all in on 4th street with split queens, also during Stud-8. Tommy Hang made the call with sixes on the board. Verner held on til the river, when Hang was able to squeeze out that third six, to go with his 7-low, eliminating Verner in the process.
The $1,500 HORSE event called it a night about 3:20 a.m. with 21 players still in the hunt, including chip leader Phil Hellmuth and Victor Ramdin. They will return at 3 p.m. PDT Tuesday to continue the battle for the bracelet and $256,412. And for Phil, to continue the quest to expand his bracelet count to an even dozen.
Final table coverage of Event #51, $5,000 H.O.R.S.E., begins Tuesday, July 1st.
