2008 World Series of Poker - Event #14 - $10K World Championship Seven Card Stud - Final Table

Monday, 09th of June 2008 11:00 PM

Not long into heads-up play, Fu Wong ran his pair of kings into the two pair of Eric Brooks. Wong was crippled. Then... fireworks.

Brooks would bring in with a 5 on the board. Wong would complete with the A up and Brooks would call. Wong would check the 4 he picked up on 4th, while Brooks would bet his 3 . A couple more raises would bring the rest of Wong's stack in the middle. The cards were then unveiled.

Brooks: (A 5 ) 5 3

Wong: (4 10 ) A 4

Brooks would pick up an ace on 5th, while Wong only caught a useless deuce. Lightning would find Wong on 6th, when Wong found his third 4. Brooks would pick up his fourth diamond, prompting Brooks to call out for any non-diamond.

Brooks would make the squeeze on the last card... it was the Q . Wong was looking to fill up, but couldn't do it, handing the pot and the championship to Brooks.

Fu Wong has been eliminated in 2nd place, earning $259,910.

Eric Brooks will take home $415,856 and the gold bracelet as the $10K World Champion of Seven Card Stud.

According to WSOP.com, Brooks says he plans to donate his winnings to the Decision Education Foundation, which helps students K through 12 learn the science of decision making.

Kostritsyn has the 4 showing and puts in a raise. Brooks makes the call with the 7 up. Brooks would lead after picking up an ace on 4th. Kostritsyn's picked up a king and called. Brooks would get dealt another 7, prompting him to put in another bet. This time Kostritsyn would put in a raise, shoving in the rest of his stack after seeing a 3 fall in front of him. Brooks called.

Brooks: (A 8 ) 7 A 7
Kostritsyn: (K 4 ) 4 K 3

It was Kostritsyn's kings up trailing the aces up of brooks. Kostritsyn would be looking to fill up on the last two streets to keep his bracelet hopes alive, but it didn't happen. Runner-runner 10's for the Russian made Brooks' last two cards irrelevant. Aces up was good enough to take down the pot.

Alexander Kostritsyn has been eliminated in 3rd place, pocketing $163,372 in the process.

This clears the way for heads-up play.

Chips:

Fu Wong - 1,000,000
Eric Brooks - 2,160,000

Three-handed now.

A series of raises on the bring in forced Minh Ly all in vs. Kostritsyn. Ly would end up mucking his (8-8) 10-3-J-Q board after Kostritsyn, with (9-9) 10-3-6-7 up, squeezed an eight on the last down card, completing his 10 high straight.

Minh Ly has been eliminated in 4th place, earning $118,816.

Right after the start of three-handed play, Kostritsyn would take a big hit, courtesy of Brooks.

Kostritsyn was raising on the early streets of the hand, with Brooks not going anywhere. By 5th street, it was Brooks coming over the top, with Q-10-K-Q in front of him, and Kostritsyn calling with his 4-9-5-K board. After the river, a Brooks check-raise earned a call from a confused Konstritsyn. Brooks would turn over K-Q-x, good for queens full. Kostritsyn mucked his cards, saying he held trip nines.

New chip counts:

Eric Brooks - 1450000
Fu Wong - 1450000
Alexander Kostritsyn - 225000

We're now four-handed.

Erik Seidel was able to double up through Kostritsyn, his aces up topping the tens up of the Russian. Seidel would then dump half of his 400K stack right back to Kostritsyn after a couple of nice pots. Then the following happened.

Seidel called Minh Ly all the way to 6th street, by that time the rest of his stack was in the middle. Seidel had K-Q-5-A on the board and pocket fives in the hole. Ly had A-10-J-7 showing and A-5 down. Ly couldn't improve on the down and dirty card, meaning all Seidel had to do was top a pair of aces. Alas, Seidel could only squeeze out a lousy 7, ending his bid for bracelet #9.

Erik Seidel has been eliminated in 5th place, good for a payday of $92,825.

Players have just returned from a short break. Before the break, Minh Ly and Eric Brook made some moves.

Ly was down near 100K after having his nines fall to the jacks of Brooks. Then he found himself all in after 4th street vs. Kostritsyn. After the cards ran out, Kostritsyn had improved to trip queens, but couldn't get rid of Ly, who riverd nines full of fours. Ly would triple up on the hand get over 300K.

After taking the pot from Ly, Brooks would also get involved in a big pot with Kostritsyn. A Brooks check raise isolated the action between the two and Kostritsyn would call down, showing Q-9 in the showdown. It was no good, as Brooks' K-3-Q-5 board combined with his K-K-5 in the hole for a boat and a huge pot, pushing him near 1 million chips.

Chip counts:

Alexander Kostritsyn - 1,080,000
Eric Brooks - 920,000
Fu Wong - 415,000
Erik Seidel - 382,000
Minh Ly - 270,000

After two more levels of play, they will visit discuss the dinner break situation.

Oppenheim's fall is complete.

Oppenheim moved the rest of his short stack in against Kostritsyn. Oppenheim had 9-8-Q-Q on the board and a couple bricks in the hole. Kostritsyn had a pair of fives up and little else. When Kostritsyn squeezed his down card, he found a third five. Oppenheim would muck.

David Oppenheim is out in 7th Place, good for $59,408.

Not long after, we had our 6th place finisher.

Paluszek was down to just a few thousand after dumping a huge pot to the nut flush of Fu Wong. He got the rest of those chips in agains Kostritsyn. Kostritsyn's cards would run out (10-8) 8-10-J-K (A), for tens and eights. Paluszek couldn't find as much as a pair.

Jim Paluszek is done in 6th Place, worth $74,260.

Chips:

Alexander Kostritsyn - 1,470,000
Eric Brooks - 580,000
Fu Wong - 520,000
Erik Seidel - 250,000
Minh Ly - 120,000

Just before the last break, we lost our first player.

Vassilios Lazarou was all in and at risk vs. Oppenheim. Oppenheim started the hand with 2-2-2, which was more than enough to eliminate Lazarou.

Vassilios Lazarou is out in 8th place, earning $48,269.

The post break action belonged to Seidel, but not all of it in a good way.

First off, Seidel would dump a big pot to Kostritsyn after the Russian revealed trip fives in the hole. This left Seidel with just under 50K.

Seidel would tangle with Kostritsyn again, this time rivering his third queen to double up.

Seidel would then find himself all in with 9-J-A-9 on the board and a couple of fives down. Oppenheim would make the call with 10-Q-2-K in front of him and K-Q down, good for two pair. Seidel would squeeze a five on the river to fill up, but Oppenheim couldn't do the same. Seidel, who was nearly out yesterday on the bubble, is surviving once again.

Chips:

Alexander Kostritsyn - 1,500,000
Minh Ly - 400,000
Eric Brooks - 340,000
Jim Paluszek - 335,000
Fu Wong - 260,000
Erik Seidel - 195,000
David Oppenheim - 65,000

The cards are in the air at the final table of Event 14, the $10K World Championship of Seven Card Stud. David Oppenheim entered the day as the big stack. Oppenheim will have his work cut out for him today with Aussie Millions champ Alexander Kostritsyn at the table, along with eight-time bracelet winner Erik Seidel, who was runner-up to Kostritsyn down under.

Seating chart:

Seat 1 - Alexander Kostritsyn
Seat 2 - David Oppenheim
Seat 3 - Jim Paluszek
Seat 4 - Erik Seidel
Seat 5 - Vassilios Lazarou
Seat 6 - Minh Ly
Seat 7 - Fu Wong
Seat 8 - Eric Brooks

The story from the final table thus far has been the rise of Alexander Kostritsyn and the fall of David Oppenheim.

Oppenheim entered play with the chip lead, searching for his first bracelet. He quickly dumped a pot to Minh Ly, then one to Jim Paluszek. Then it was Oppenheim paying to see a Kostritsyn full house to dip down to about 50K.

Kostritsyn rode that full house to the chip lead, a spot the young Russian has occupied at many points of the tournament.

The level has ended, giving the players a 20-minute break.
