Join us tomorrow at noon for live coverage from the Bellagio.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 09:00 PM

The clock was stopped with about 15 minutes to play.  A card was drawn to see how many hands would be played out and Kenny Tran's table, which featured Tom Scheider, David Grey and Jonathan Kalmar, had $100 each riding on which number would be drawn.  It was a three and an unknown player would pocket $700.

In the last three hands, Brian Rast took a big hit.  Rast would be forced to lay down on the river, leaving him with about 150K (he was at 1.1 million as recently as level 14).

Ray Coburn ran his kings right into David Chui's aces, ending his WPT run.

Gus Hansen would take the biggest pot of the tourney in the second to last hand of Day 3.

Tim Phan - minutes before the hit
Tim Phan would make it 32K to go and the player on his left would call.  Hansen bumped it to 152K and only Phan would see the flop with him.  A 3 4 fell and Phan would check to the bettor.  Hansen pushed out 202K and Phan would instantly announce all in.  Hansen would tank and a crowd would gather.  Hansen would call, holding A K, in good shape against Phan's A Q.  After the 8 turn and J river fell, Hansen would double up to nearly 2.3 million.  Phan is around the 100K mark.

Play has concluded.  It looks like 55 players are remaining.  Official chip counts will be posted as soon as they are made available.  It appears Hansen is our chip leader.

Poker Pages' live coverage resumes Wednesday at 12 p.m. PST.

A clock issue led to an early breakclock in level 14.  Level 14 has since ended and play has immediately begun in level 15, with blinds at 5,000-10,000 and a 1,000 ante.

In the closing minutes of level 14, Brian Rast busted three players, including Negreanu, on his way to the 1-million chip club.

Brian Rast
With 4 9 10 on the board, Rast would lead out for 65K.  Negreanu was next to act and shoved his last 189K.  Dino French, the man on Negreanu's, left followed Daniel with the all in, also holding about 190K.  Negreanu's eyes would roll after a third player, Saifuddin Ahmad, declared all in for 215K with Rast still to act.  Rast would tank, giving a speech about being priced in, before making the call of about 150K more.  Negreanu tabled J J and French showed a set of tens.  Ahmad held top two, while Rast's 7 8 left him with some open ender outs.  The Q gave Daniel some hope and while the river J gave Daniel the set, Rast would hit his straight to bust all three players and scoop a pot of more than 800K..

Rast is over 1.1 million, trailing only Cory Carroll in the unofficial WPT chip counts.

The bubble has burst.  Jordan Rich is our bubble boy.

Rich was all in preflop with A-A against the 8-8 of Amir Vahedi.  The 8 on the flop was enough to send the 5-Diamond final tabler Rich to the rail.

Everyone is now guaranteed no less than $39,570.

Level 14; 1,000 ante to go along with the 4K-8K blinds.  Time for hand-for-hand play.

The Bellagio implemented a new procedure for hand-for-hand play.  This from the WPT site:

"If a table has players who are all in, they do not reveal their hole cards until all the tables either complete their hands or reach an all-in situation. That way, players at other tables don't have the advantage of knowing whether a short stack is weak or strong, potentially affecting their decision."

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 05:31 PM

We're down to 101 players.  When players return from break, we will be in hand-for-hand play.  Those who avoid the label of bubble boy will be guaranteed no less than $39K.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 05:19 PM

Break time.

Before the break, Ray Coburn doubled through Chuck Kelly when his K-K found a set on the flop to crack Kelly's aces.

Philippe Rouas was all in with 6-6 and was called by a player holding Q-Q.  The 7-8-9 flop stopped Rouas from putting on his jacket momentarily, but after two bricks fell, Ruoas would give a few handshakes on his way out of the tournament area.

Gus Hansen was challenging for the chip lead, but would take a step back after shipping over 100K across the table.  With the board reading J A 10 6 Q, Hansen would tank, befor deciding to throw 63K into a 75K pot.  His opponent would make the call and Hansen would tell him "I don't think I can beat anything."  Hansen would muck after his opponent turned over his A 3.

Bryan Devonshire lost over 100K to Steve Billirakis, who rivered a queen high straight.

Erik Seidel, Nam Le and 5-Diamond Champ Eugene Katchalov each fell during the last level.

Players have returned from break to blinds of 3,000-6,000 with a 500 ante.

It's break time.

Before the break, I had a turn on the floor and watched Gus Hansen pick up a big pot.

Gus made it 13K to go from the hijack and was called by the CO.  7 4 9 on the flop and Hansen would take his time counting out 22K, eventually cascading it into the pot.  The CO would again call.  A on the turn led to another long though process for Gus, who took a couple minutes before sliding out another 55K.  3 on the river put Hansen in the tank, he would cut out 122K, but ultimately decided to check it.  The CO would check behind, prompting Hansen to say "I've got a small pair," showing J 4.  The cutoff would muck and Hansen began stacking the 200K pot.

"200K pot for a pair of fours?" commented Greg Meuller, who was sweating from the neighboring table.

Hansen is now neck-and-neck with Jayde Tran for the chip lead.

Also before the break, Mike Gracz was able to eliminate an opponent, catching river flush with A 6 on a board of K 9 K4 7.  The all in player slammed his hand on the felt and tabled K 10.  Gracz now has more than 500K in chips, which puts him near the top of the leaderboard.

Some recent eliminations; Mike Sexton, David "Devilfish" Ulliott, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson and Dan Harrington.

According to the tournament monitors, there are 124 players remaining on just 13 tables.  With the top 100 getting paid, the money bubble isn't far away.

Jayde Tran

Just 142 players remain.  Our chip leader looks to be Jayde Tran, wife of Kenny Tran, with close to 750K.

A look at some of the tough tables.

Nick Binger, Anna Wroblewski, Daniel Negreanu, David Redlin, Rhynie Campbell and Steve Wong at table 56.

Table 60 houses Phil Ivey, David Grey and Kenny Tran.

Bryan Devonshire has to deal with David Ulliott and Alex Jacob.

The toughest table of the day race is between the one featuring
David Benyamine, Alan Smurfit, Ross Boatman, Jordan Rich, Greg Mueller, Jordan Morgan and Burt Boutin, and table 63, which can boast of Isabelle Mercier, Mark Seif, James Van Alstyne, Doyle Brunson, Men Nguyen and Danny Wong.

Cards are being dealt again.  New level with 2,000-4,000 blinds and a 500 ante.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 01:48 PM

Level 11 is done.  Players will be back in 15.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 01:45 PM

A few bustouts to mention.

Dan Shak had his kings cracked by nines after his opponent found a set on the  flop, earning a trip to the rail.

Kathy Liebert took a couple of early hits and soon found herself racing for her tournament life, her tens against A-K.  The king on the flop ended her day.

Mike Matusow saw the CO make it 11K to go and pushed his last 23,800 in from the button.  The SB would call and was followed into the pot by the CO.  The two checked down the 10 9 9 J 8 board and the small blind tabled A K .  The CO mucked and Matusow said "I can't beat that.  I knew I had you [CO], but the SB had to wake up with a hand."  Matusow has busted in the first level of the day.

Roy Winston also went broke, saying he got unlucky in one pot, then made a mistake in the hand that did him in.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 12:35 PM

We've already seen a few big all ins.  Tom Dwan and Nam Le survived theirs to double and triple up, respectively, but Scotty Nguyen wasn't as lucky and has been eliminated early in Day 2.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 12:30 PM

We may have a WPT first.  Tournament Director Jack McClelland, with the help of Daniel Negreanu, took a vote to overturn the "show one, show all" rule.  After votes were cast in overwhelming favor of overturning the rule, McClelland ruled that it would now be ok to show just one card.  He did warn players to be patient, since he trained his dealers to always turn both cards over.

Tuesday, 22nd of April 2008 12:12 PM

Shuffle up and deal!!!  Blinds are 1,500-3,000 with a 400 ante.
