(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

Play has ended for the day. There are approximately 650 players remaining from the end of this day that will resume play on Day 2B which starts on Wednesday.

A few notable players were eliminated in the last couple hours including Freddy Deeb, Backstreet Boy A.J McLean, James Mackey, Dutch Boyd, Erick Lindgren, and Antonio Esfandiari.

Many name players made it through the day. Among them are Daniel Negreanu, Dan Heimiller, Mike Laing, Chip Jett, Sorel Mizzi, Thor Hansen, Chris Grigorian, Michael Binger (who looks to be in great shape to make the money and break the record), Carlos Mortensen, Gus Hansen, Susie Isaacs, Peter Feldman, Gavin Smith, Paul Magriel, Layne Flack, Leif Force, Sully Erna, Kevin Song, Karina Jett, John Murphy, Mimi Tran, Theo Tran, David Plastik, and Nick Binger. PSO end of day updates: xxPiratexx has 32,800 and nvflag has 14,000.

This concludes our coverage for the day. Day 2A will start tomorrow at noon and we will bring you all the action from start to finish.

Here are photos of some of the chip leaders including two well known professionals:

Josh Evans, Day 1D chip leader

Josh Evans from Dallas, Texas, is the Day 1D chip leader. He was at nearly 250K the last time I checked.

Evan Kim

Evan Kim is from Los Angeles, California, and I believe is 2nd in chips out of the Day 1D players with about 200K in chips.

Gary Styczynski

Gary Styczynski won a bracelet earlier this World Series and has put himself in great position again with approximately 170K in chips.

Bill Edler

Also at 170K in chips and also a bracelet winner earlier this World Series is Bill Edler.

Ted Forrest

And rounding out the list is no stranger to big-time poker. Ted Forrest is above 150K in chips.

Marina Baroco and Antonio Esfandiari
Tuesday, 10th of July 2007 02:21 AM
(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

A couple of quick updates: xxPiratexx 39,600 nvflag 17,000

Marina Baroco joined Antonio Esfandiari's table and the chatter there is going. Half the table is focused on the poker game and are remaining silent and watching the play carefully. Antonio, a man named Joey in seat 3 (Antonio seems to know him well), and Marina, however, are a completely different story. The first topic of conversation was about crazy prop bets. Antonio was talking about how someone lost a bet and had to get a tatoo of him (him being Antonio) on his arm. It was either that or pay 50K. I think I'd find a way to scrum up 50K.

So Marina kind of fake dares Antonio to kiss Joey -- a proposition to which Antonio laughs at. She says "you'd do it for 5 million dollars." He gives her a serious look and says "For 5 million I'd do more then kiss him." Coming Soon: Indecent Proposal 2 starring Antonio Esfandiari and some dude named Joey.

A fun table (Joey is in seat 3)

And what poker conversation is complete without a segway to Brokeback Mountain. Yes, that's right... nearly 3 minutes were spent talking about the infamous, but critically acclaimed movie. Joey admitted to pirating the movie and said "I was home alone in bed one night and watched it." Both Antonio and I thought that was... ummm... a rather unusual time to be watching Brokeback Mountain.

Transition from Brokeback Mountain to a proposed wrestling match between Antonion and Joey encouraged once again by Marina. Antonio says "Have you seen him? Wrestling him would be no fun. Wrestling you sounds like fun." Before it was over, however, I think there was a match arranged where Joey would take on Antonio and Phil Laak. If they did it in sumo wrestling outfits and threw in some jello I think they could turn it into a pay-per-view event. Especially if they added Marina to the mix. She even mentioned something about making a whitebread sandwich. Ummm where do I sign up for that one?

As I was leaving a photographer from another media outlet came by and took Marina's photo and said to me "It's so refreshing to take a picture of a beautiful woman after looking at ugly men all day."

Well said sir.

(Justin West reporting)

When I came to Las Vegas for the first time, in 2006, to cover the World Series of Poker, I prepared myself by reading books like Super System, Big Deal, and, of course, The Biggest Game in Town. The last of those was the biggest influence on me. It describes not only the events surrounding the 1997 World Series of Poker - though Stu Ungar is noticeably absent due to a grievance on Alvarez, the author's, part - as well as the history behind it.

That book, finished by me in no more than a few hours, provided me with perspective. It described an entirely different event than what I saw in 2006. I found myself longing for a time that was, long before me. That's how good Alvarez' book was.

Doyle Brunson, one of the most revered of all poker players for those that follow the game, is part of the generation that saw the World Series of Poker in its beginning. So was John Cutter, whom I mentioned in my last post.

In lieu of pacing the rails for forty minutes before the players went on break, I chose instead to go back into the VIP room and talk further with Mr. Cutter.

Boy," he said. I took absolutely no offense whatsoever. "I been in this town longer than Doyle or Amarillo or any of these players you hear about. I'm a true gambler. I used to play pool... that how I got into gambling. Then it was gin, poker... I'm a true gambler."

One of the things that first drew me to Mr. Cutter was the fact that he always carried himself with a certain attitude. Always dressed business slightly-higher-than-casual, cowboy hat topping his head and a glass of win or beer in his hand, cigarettes smoked through a holder, Mr. Cutter is a visual representation of not only the "old school" gambler, but of the South. Just listen to him talk for a few minutes and you'll see what I mean.

I listened to him talk on for many minutes before I finally had to stop him.

"Mr. Cutter, would you like to shoot a game of pool?"

"For what?"

"I don't know."

"Loser buys the beer," Mr. Cutter said with a grin, meaning that the loser had to walk to the free beer and open it for the winner.

"Sounds good."

"Alright then," said Cutter. "Rack 'em up."

I racked up a game of 8-ball... and this man, this man who seems almost like a frozen piece of time from an age gone by, proceeded to thoroughly kick my ass. He's 70 years old.

When the game was over, he grinned.

"Still got it. "

Brandi Hawbaker
Tuesday, 10th of July 2007 01:08 AM
(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

Players are in the middle of a break and they are coloring up the 25 chips.

Brandi Hawbaker was recently eliminated from the tournament when she pushed all in for an additional 11K over a guy who was never going to fold... nope... not in a million years. Sure enough he called with KQ. Brandi had A7 so she was marginally ahead but that went out the window when a king flopped and a queen came on the turn. "How can you call 11,000 more with KQ," she asked before leaving. I think the guy that busted her wanted to lay on the poker table and spread her chips all over his body. But I could just be imagining things.

On a more positive note at least Sully from Godsmack will be able to focus on poker now.

PSO Updates: nvflag 12.5K (he said he was up to 44 but lost a big pot with trip kings to a guy that hit a flush) and xxPiratexx 28K.

Some chip counts of notable players: Daniel Negreanu 105K, Mike Laing 95K, Bill Edler 85K, Chip Jett 80K, Ralph Perry 75K, Carlos Mortensen 75K, Theo Tran 65K, Ron Ware 65K, and Michael Binger 50K.

Stick 'em up!

John Cutter
Tuesday, 10th of July 2007 12:12 AM
(Justin West reporting)

Whelp, John Cutter, always a cordial gentleman (except when he's not) has busted out.

"Come have a beer with me in the V.I.P. lounge!" he'd said to me just before the players went on break.

I came back from break to scout him out and he was nowhere to be found. The players at his table said that he'd busted about five or ten minutes before I came by, so I immediately went to meet him in the V.I.P room. I found him there, and we exchanged a few words about his bust-out (he went from being nonchalant about it, to being very anoyed very quickly).

"You know," John said to me a few nights ago over a cigarette. "I think I'm done after this year."

"Why?"

"Well I'm a break-even player. I think it's run its course. But I'll give you one piece of advice, young man. Never put anything off. Don't put a single thing on your life off, just go out and do it. 'Cause one day you'll be layin' up there on your last bed, thinking 'I shoulda done this,' or 'I coulda done that.' Just go out and do it. That's the best advice I can ever give you."

I took the words to heart.

Just as a word of note, the V.I.P. lounge, accessible with any $1,000 charity donation, is very, very posh. Alcohol, a pool table, and even one of those new-fangled heads-up machines that PokerTek is marketing and will no doubt soon pervade each and every bar in the state of Texas.

I had a chance to play one one of these for the very first time, against  Mr. Greg Cash. Greg is the co-founder of a site called BAPokerBoss.com.  What this site proposes to do is very interesting, electronically connecting budding and even established poker players across the nation/world with potential backers. The site is undergoing a big re-design, which should be live shortly after the WSOP, so don't let the somewhat basic appearance put you off. I'm honestly intrigued by the idea, and am looking forward to following the site's progress.

Oh, and did I win the match against Greg Cash?

Of course I did.

Michael Lynn
Tuesday, 10th of July 2007 12:08 AM
(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

Gonzo: Chip Reese, Michael Craig, Alan Boston, John Racener, Joe Bartholdi, David Benyamine, and Tuan Le.

Still here but losing chips rapidly: Vinnie Vinh's chair

Some recent chip counts: PSO member nvflag 18K, PSO member xxPiratexx 37K, e-mail request Frank Szabo 27K, James Mackey 80K, Carlos Mortensen 63K, John Phan 61K, Michael Binger 50K, Daniel Negreanu 45K, Thor Hansen 50K, and Ted Forrest 35K.

Anyone remember Michael Lynn? He was the young man ESPN featured on one of their Main Event preliminary episodes. His mom was watching and cheering him on and the segment focused on how close the two were. Well they are both here. Michael is playing and his Mom is in the Milwaukee's Best stands watching from a distance. Lynn flopped a set of 6's on a rag flop and got it all in with another big stack who had an overpair... jacks. The sixes held and Lynn doubled up.

Look Mommy! I won!

Just a few hands later Lynn took out the same player when he pushed with 7's and Mikey (as his Mom was yelling) called with jacks. Despite a set for the 7's on the turn, Lynn hit a flush and started to celebrate almost giving his Mom an air high five from 100 feet away. His Mom and her friends were vocal and you could hear them across the entire tournament room. He is the chip leader at the moment with nearly 175K in chips.

Speaking of vocal, a couple of hours ago I was in one far corner of the tournament room when from a distance you could hear clear as day "Yeeeeeeeee Hawwwwwwwwwwww." The entire tournament area laughed and one older gentleman who was wearing a cowboy hat said "I think that's my third cousin."

Dutch Boyd just made one of his patented punish the limpers short stack but get rewarded donk moves (I've seen him do it at least three times this World Series). One limper, Boyd pushed for his last 4K or so, and the limper called. Boyd had T4o, his opponent two paint cards... and Boyd hit trip 10's to double up. How's that saying go? Better to be lucky then good? Yea, that's it. Boyd is at about 10K now after the hand.

(Michael Cheser reporting)

I witnessed a hand between two players unknown to me, but it was noteworthy in two ways. The shorter stack re-raised all-in with A K and got called by a much taller stack who happened to hold A A.  According to PokerStove, the A K had a 12.14% chance of winning the hand preflop. Until, of course, the flop came Q J T. Now the A K was a 93.33% chance to win, and the straight did in fact hold up. But the dealer, whether not paying attention or whether shocked at the flop like everyone else, pushed the pot to the winner before paying him, with matching chips from the loser of the hand, for his final all-in bet amount. But now it was one glob of chips. So the floor had to be called, and they had to reconstruct the hand, from blinds and antes, to bets and raises. All the while, the player who had aces was beginning to steam and glare at the dealer. Finally, the winning player said, "Sorry." The losing player answered graciously, "Don't worry about it," and paid the man his chips.

Claus Nielsen moved all-in preflop for 22K more and an early position raiser went into the tank. He took so long that one of his table mates quipped, "If we all sit here and you never make a decision, we'll all make the final table!" The other player folded and Claus lived to fight another day.

On a flop of 4 6 4, Susie Isaacs bet, and another player pushed for 28K, which would have put Isaacs all-in. After some agonizing, Isaacs called and turned over 9 9. She was delighted to see her opponent show 7 6. When the J turn and 9 river came out, Susie yelled, "Yes!" She vaulted up to 50K or so and her opponent was left with just about 7K.

(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

1,058 players remaining. Among those who have left us include defending champion Jamie Gold, Erica Schoenberg, Bryan Micon, Paul Darden, William Thorson, Steve Zolotow, Martin de Knijff, Cyndy Violette, Danny Wong, James Worth, and Jim Bechtel.

A few chips counts of notable players at or near the top of the leaderboard: Chip Jett 105K, Ralph Perry 78K, Mike Laing 75K, Bill Edler 72K, Paul Magriel 71K, Ron Ware 64K, Daniel Negreanu 60K, Gavin Smith 60K, John Phan 58K, Prahlad Friedman 64K, Theo Tran 60K, Michael Binger 54K, and Vinnie Vinh's Chair (he never showed back up from dinner break) 27K.

And here are some photos I took while walking around to give you an idea of the kinds of things you would see if you were here:

John Cutter

John Cutter. Something about him exudes fun... and great stories.

I'm so lucky!

This young woman had just hit a miracle to survive. She was all in pre-flop with ten's against kings and hit a ten. The ten hitting caused her opponent to yell (quite loud) the F-bomb and he paced back and forth for several minutes muttering and shaking his head in disbelief. I think it cost him like 10K of his 60K stack... if he's going to get that pissed about one hand he's in for a long, long tournament.

Sure you are. And I'm Eminem.

Really bad shirt #1

Worst. Shirt. Ever.

Even worse then really bad shirt #1

Marina Baroco

I fold. No really I do.

(Michael Cheser reporting)

Gavin Smith never looked back after that lucky break to double up earlier off Nick Binger. He is cruising now, with nearly 70K. But don't worry, he could do something rash at any moment. Such is Gavin Smith poker.

Isaac Haxton got his final 11K in preflop with A A and got called by a skeptical player with A K. As soon as he saw those rockets, the guy who called off his stack was completely disgusted with himself. He watched the board without much hope, and that proved to be well founded: J 4 3 9 6. Haxton doubled up to about 24K and the other player was ousted.  He told the table that he had heard the guy next to him talking about visualizing aces, and then he himself peeked down to see that very hand.

Woman with notebook
There is a woman writing down notes in a journal of all the hands in which she is involved. For example, she will write down what the blinds and antes are, what position she was in, what cards she had, all the betting, and the end result. While I commend someone for wanting to record stuff like this for later analysis, I have to question doing it at a big tournament and in such detail. The time required to do it would detract from one's ability to study their opponents. And, in her case, she was writing down her hole cards in a notebook that could be potentially observed by her neighbors. This is just a bad idea.

Players are on a 20-minute break. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Word to the wise: don't flip another player's cards over. I know, you know this already, but a player at table ten didn't. Odd. Of course, he received a penalty for snatching an opponent's hand out of the air on its way to the muck, and turning it over for the table to see. One way to acquire information, I suppose.

Jim Arvanetes
Jennifer Newell mentioned yesterday a peculiar phenomenon that seems to take place just as the players return from dinner break. Pay loosens up considerably, and the players get tired. The loose play is interesting, but isn't it common for folks to get tired just after they eat? I know I do. I also seem to remember a passage in a book somewhere, warning players that eating on a full stomach could restrict their play. I've always made it a rule not to.

It's easy to spend more than half a day observing hands of Texas Hold'em, and grow so accustomed to seeing one-outers, suck-outs, and even some simply bad plays, that you lose sight of the other side... really well-played poker. For that reason, I made it a point to just stop and watch a hand that was developing between two players:

The board showed: 3 5 7

A player in early position,Jim Arvanetes, had found himself involed in a heads-up pot, facing a 9,100 bet from Michael Katz. The bet was strong, significant enough that either player could very well be pot-committed on the turn.

Finally, Jim called.

Both players checked the 10  turn.

The river: 2

Jim Arvantetes was first to act on the board of 3 5 7, and here's where things got a little interesting. Instead of immediately checking, or even betting right out of the gate, Jim took pause. For moments on end, perhaps even minutes, Jim focused intently on the flop while calculating his next move.

Finally, after subtly counting down his stack numerous times, he moved the rest of into the center of the pot.

Michael Katz
This was the first aggressive move that Jim had made throughout the entire hand, which was particularly significant to Michael, faced with the call. Michael was visibly puzzled. While the pot was never counted down, it was clear that if Michael called this all-in bet, his stack would suffer a massive hit.

I could see the cogs turning, see Michael trying to sort through the various hands that Jim might go all-in with on that river card. Did he flop a straight, and just slow play it the whole way? Perhaps a big pair, and given the rainbow board Jim felt confident it was the best hand? Whatever hand Michael put him on, after an intense internal debate, Michael finally laid his hand down.

I asked the players their names, and even if I could I wouldn't have asked what they had held. It's much more fun to try and figure it out!

Just a few photos for everyone:

Sully from Godsmack (wearing hat in background)

Sully from Godsmack is playing. I'm a big rock and roll fan and Godsmack is hit or miss for me but I'm a fan regardless. I remember he played last year and went fairly deep (made the money I think).

Greg Spinder (in hat)

Since Greg Spinder's wife has been so nice about everything I've decided to include a photo of Greg in action. Greg even has a semi-famous fan (check the rail). Greg is at 25K right now.

Jerry Garver

Here's Jerry "xxPiratexx" Garver trying to squish Kitty. Mean Jerry. Mean. Jerry is right where he started... with 22K. The other PSO member playing, nvflag, is at 22K.

Steve and Amy

Steve and Amy are two of my favorite floor people. Steve will tell it like it is and is often involved in some of the controversial decisions we've reported over the course of the World Series including the David Singer cell phone issue.

Dutch Boyd

Dutch Boyd was jealous he wasn't getting his picture taken with Kitty.

Michael Craig, the poker author, has had a smashing Series. He made two final tables and has already built up his stack today to over 50K.

Jack Ury, the 94-year-old player, called off all his chips on a Q 4 Q flop and exclaimed, "I've got a big hand here!". He turned over A Q for trips. His opponent had the always-dreaded A A  With the 5 J turn-river, Ury doubled up to about 21K.

Yosh Nakano
Yosh Nakano, a legendary cash game player out of Los Angeles, is playing well and is up to 42K. Bob Stupak is at his same table, but has far fewer chips at the moment.

Jim Bechtel has unfortunately been eliminated from the tournament. On a J-3-T board, he chose to stick the rest of his short stack in with K-Q and the open-end draw. But Chris McCormack, sitting on his immediate left, tabled Q-Q. The T-6 turn river didn't help the former champ, so he is gone.

According to the board, 1230 players remain in today's session.

Carlos Mortensen
Monday, 09th of July 2007 06:46 PM
(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

And the loudest round applause from the tournament room this World Series came because of this proclamation from Nolan Dalla: "Ladies and Gentleman, Phil Hellmuth has been eliminated from the tournament." People cheered... laughed... the amount of chatter increased ten-fold. I even saw some people high fiving one another. Ahhhh, it's good to be loved.

I have the complete list of payouts and will post them in a few minutes.

Jerry "xxPiratexx" Garver has fallen a bit to 22K. nvflag has moved tables and I couldn't locate him -- hopefully he'll call me on the dinner break (which is soon). Greg Spinder also is around the 20-25K mark. Also on the rail now is Fred Goldberg. Some dude named Vlado Matinkovic already has 140K. Over/under that he finishes with less then 50? Anyone? Bueller? Carlos Mortensen and Theo Tran are at the same table. Carlos has position and both players are hyper-aggressive. It should be an interesting table to watch and I'll be making sure to keep an eye on it.

The official news provider really botched this hand, so listen up to how things really went:

On a flop of 5 3 4 with about 3.5K in the pot, Nick Binger checked and Gavin Smith bet 2.6K. "How much do you have behind?" asked Binger. "A lot!" replied Smith. After a count, it was determined that Gavin had another 5.4K. Binger announced that he was all-in, shoving out more than 35K. Gavin went into the tank, obviously displeased about the situation he was in. Having the ESPN cameras and several looky-loos hovering around the table couldn't help. Finally, resigned, Smith called and turned over A 5 for top pair, an overcard, and a gutshot. Binger had 8 8 for the overpair. Gavin would need some help and didn't have to wait long, as the 2 turn gave him his straight. Binger just shook his head in disgust. With the 9 river, the 20K pot was pushed to Gavin, who nonchalantly began stacking.

Michael Chu, the bracelet winner from Event # 8, got all-in preflop with his J-J and was unhappy to see his opponent with Q-Q. Four bricks came on the board and Chu was all but gone, until one of the two remaining jacks spiked on the river. "Oh!" exclaimed Chu, as he sat back down, now with 14K.

On a board of 4 9 5 T and with 25K in the pot, Gus Hansen moved all-in for his final 11K. His opponent, who had him covered, but not by much, folded in disgust, and suddenly Hansen has 36K to work with.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the numbers for the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event are in!!

A total of 6,358 players competed in this year's main event, generating a total prize pool of $59,784,954.

621 spots will be paid.

And the number everyone wants to know... first place in the 2007 WSOP World Championship will earn $8,250,000.  621st will take home $20,320.

The room applauded, but not necessarily with excitement. The numbers are just about what everyone expected. At least what I expected, having put the over/under at 6,500 and first place at $8 Million.

"Forget clapping for the prize money!" said Daniel Negreanu. "How about let's hear it for Harrah's putting some of their money back!"
-

Folks, Vinnie Vinh does not look good. When he's not in a hand, he's not paying attention to what's going on around him, opting instead to spend most of his time with his head down. He seems very tired, continually chugging coffee. But, at least he's here.

Brett Jungblutt, aka "Gank," is watching "Lost" on his iPod. Interesting selection for viewing while playing poker, don't you think?

I witnessed a pretty wild hand at Table 186. David Plastik had gotten his final 4.6K in preflop with 8 8 and was up against A T . When the 9 T K flop came out, Plastik mumbled something, left his chair, ducked under the rope, and headed for the exit. The turn came the J and as the 2 river hit the felt, giving David a backdoor diamond flush, Plastik had reached the Amazon Room exit. Bob Goldfarb, also at the table, called after David. "You mean my hand won?" yelled David back. "Yes!" replied Bob. But the dealer had other intentions. He swept up the board and was about to award the pot to the other player, and when practically the entire table objected, he stopped his action and called the floor. When the floorman arrived and heard the story, he ruled that since the cards were face-up, the "cards speak" rule applied and the chips should be awarded to the winning hand, irrespective of whether the player was at his seat. Plastik sat back down, now with 10K, and looked stupefied that he had won the hand. I don't think he ever saw the complete board.

Jim Bechtel, 1993 and now
Do you think there's any degree of intimidation in playing a former winner of this event underneath a huge banner with his name and photo? Well, that's what the players at one table are facing, with Jim Bechtel, the 1993 winner, sitting in the 5 seat.

Daniel Negreanu is garnering a lot of interest from the media today, but he has had very little to show for it. He is sitting on about 7K, and that is because he won a small pot in which he moved all-in on the flop but got no callers.

Out already: Eric Lynch, Tim West, Michael Gracz, Hank Azaria, Travis Rice, and Brad Booth. Riding the short stack are David Chiu, Nam Le, Fred Goldberg, Erica Schoenberg, Erick Lindgren, Maureen Feduniak, and Cyndy Violette (they all have under 10K). Couple quick PSO updates: Jerry "xxPiratexx" Garver has 30K after taking out a short stack with the nut flush while Steve "nvflag" Dargenio still has 22K. I'd take a picture of Jerry but 1) it'd break my camera and 2) I don't have a wide enough lens to fit more then his head in (just kidding Jerry... well kinda). Jill Spinder e-mailed me asking me to check on her husband Greg. She told me that he left their family vacation to play in the Main Event. Now that's a poker player for you! Greg is doing just fine Jill with 25K or so... but I'm sorry... I did not hug him for you.

Dario Minieri is the first player to top the 100K mark. Paul "The Frog" Magriel has over 60K. Other notable players who have doubled up or come close to it thus far include Ralph Perry, Chip Reese, Layne Flack, Gus Hansen, and Peter Feldman.

And I must say it is a "sheer" disappointment that Jennifer "Jennicide" Leigh did not play in the Main Event. Earlier in the World Series there had been rumors and speculation (that had been verified) that she would be playing the Main Event in lingerie. Now thousands of poker fans will be unable to sleep at night (or err other things) due to her failure to live up to her word. Tsk tsk Jen... and I was such a fan.

I also ran into Justin Sellers, a player I'd squared off against in a Dakota Poker Tour event. Justin ended up winning Player of the Year for that series of events and has game ... although I do have to admit that my friends and I got tired of hearing "Justin Sellers blah blah blah" being announced by the tournament director (who is Mitch Schock, a poker player who finished real deep in last years Main Event) when we were playing in the event. It was quite comical really.

He made the final table with me at that event and I doubled him up twice before busting him when I flopped a set. I went on to win the tournament. This gratutious absolutely nothing to do with the World Series of Poker Main Event moment brought to you by Aaron Hendrix's ego. Actually Justin's a helluva player (he was by far my toughest opponent at the final table) who has experience playing these type of events so it would not surprise me to see him do well.

A short while ago there was announcement from the floor from Nolan Dalla. Nolan excitedly introduced Robert Wexler for a brief sermon.

Wexler is a congressman from Florida, who is inolved in the struggle to legalize and regulate online poker.

"It's time for Americans to have your (sic) voice heard! The fact that online poker is illegal in America is absolute insanity! With your help, we're gonna reverse this legislation!"

There was applause from the room, and chatter at the tables. After his brief speech, Robert shook the hand of Gary Thompson who congratulated him on a job well done.

I wonder if I can use the microphone in the Amazon Room to promote my own personal campaigns. How about the "Get Justin an iPhone Fund?" Seems like it would suit the interests of everyone in the room if I acquired one, because if I don't I'm going to be in a bad mood until I do.

Robert Daily, whom I mentioned earlier, took down a very nice pot with quad jacks!

David Solomon's table has just balanced, and before the last break he found himself caught with his hand in the cookie jar, bluffing 2,600 on a river board of 9 7 8 4 9. One player called the bet and showed an 8 for two pair, nines and eights, and David mucked his hand.

Jeffrey Pollack

(Aaron Hendrix reporting)

With the field that we have here today we have easily topped the 6,000 mark and probably are closer to 6,200. Not bad considering the UIGEA's impact on online qualifiers. Seems to be many more big name's playing today then any of the other days and I can understand since today seems to me to be the most favorable. Play, have one day off, and then get right back in the groove. I don't know how people could play on Friday and have three days off. Well I do, I'd just prefer the one day off.

For all the flack he gets Jeffrey Pollack is a good guy. He takes it all in stride and is good natured about the criticism levied his way. I truly believe he listens to player's concerns and wants to do something to address them. That being said, I do think that they could prepare for situations more efficiently. Some of the issues that have taken place over the World Series could have (and should have) been anticipated with some careful planning.

If you have a player you want me to cover today or there is anything else you want to discuss/talk about, please let me know via e-mail at ajhendrix@hotmail.com. I need table and seat # and if the table is broken there won't be much I can do unless you get their new table/seat #.

Some photos for everyone:

Maureen Feduniak

I've gotten to know Bob and Maureen Feduniak over the course of the World Series and I have to say they are two of the nicest people in poker. They always have a smile on their face and a positive attitude... and I love that.

Steve Dargenio

Steve Dargenio is playing today. For those of you that don't know Steve won his seat through www.pokerschoolonline.com and their "Big One" promotion. Three times a year PSO members are given the opportunity to win sponsorship points to a major poker tournament through a special tournament that you have to qualify for. Based on your finish in these qualifiers you receive a certain qualification level. Steve had earned a "D" qualification which is the best possible and he became the first PSO player in history to win the "Big One" with a D qual and earned 15,000 sponsorship points in the process. All this for under $20 a month plus the opportunity to learn from greats like T.J. Cloutier and me (oh wait, I don't teach there anymore... well you can still find me hanging out there and offering advice...cuz I'm nice... and hey that rhymes!).

Steve was a little up at 22K when I went by his table.

Erica Schoenberg

Erica Schoenberg is off to a slow start today but with this structure there is no reason to panic. Erica almost took down a bracelet a couple weeks ago finishing 3rd in one of the $1,500 events.

Cyndy Violette

Cyndy Violette is always a friendly, colorful face in the crowd. Kitty has posed with lots of lovely ladies (Shannon Elizabeth, Cyndy Violette, Erica Schoenberg, and the Hooters girls to name a few). I'm thinking I'm going to have to sell kitty on E-bay now. Any takers?

Robert Williamson III

Maybe if I close my eyes no one will know it's me.

Sorel Mizzi

I was walking out to valet the other day with my friend Catherine when Sorel Mizzi drove by in his sweet little black sports car. He stopped to tell me how he had exited out of the tournament. Wishing good things for Sorel because good people deserve good things.

Michael Binger

Michael "The Machine" Binger needs to cash in this event to break the record for most cashes in one World Series. He is currently tied with 8. Not a bad follow up to a 3rd place finish in last years Main Event.

Eric Lynch

Eric "Rizen" Lynch is another internet professional who has made the successful transition to the live arena.

Well, they've already set up some cash games in the Amazon Room, so all the tables in the tent must have been moved by now.

On a flop of 7 9 J, Paul Magriel called a player's all-in. The other player had flopped the nuts with T 8 and Magriel had K Q for the higher straight draw and the flush draw. The Q  turn didn't help Magriel, but the J river did the trick nicely. The other guy looked disappointed but took it like a man and headed out of the room.

Scott Ritchey
A couple more quotes I overheard:

"You know, if it weren't for the turn and the river, I would be the greatest poker player alive."

"There is too much donk-on-donk violence going on at this table."

I ran into my friend Scott Ritchey, from Miami, at Table 43. He and I met at last year's Main Event, as we both had earned our entries through the same online poker room. Defying the odds, we both cashed, but Scott made it much deeper than I did, finishing in 290th spot. He had over 300K in chips but lost them all when he overplayed ace-king, so I'm pretty sure he learned that lesson. He has his work cut out for him today, though, as both David Baker and Mimi Tran are seated at his table.

Monday, 09th of July 2007 03:59 PM
(Justin West reporting)

Phil Hellmuth is dressed like the world's most arrogant race car driver. Unless, of course, Tide detergent changed their logo.

Last year's World Series of Poker tournament director, Robert Daily, is playing! He's not the tournament director this year, as he has moved on to a different project. It's always good to the see the guy, as he's always in good spirits and greets me with a firm handshake. Good guy! Robert has about 18,000 in front of him right now and says he's only played three hands.

I mentioned yesterday that the room seemed eerily quiet. The riffle of chips, and an occasional all-in call from a dealer are really the only sounds that pervade the room. Kathy, one of the best dealers here at the Rio, approached me a moment ago to explain why.

"No cash games!" she saidl

Aha! She's right. The cash games create a lot of noise. The players in the main event are about as serious as a heart attack.

I spotted David Solomon, who finished at a final table during last year's World Series of Poker. David is from Austin, and I consider him to be one of the strongest players on the scene there. David has taken two big cashes down since he's been in Vegas, both at the Venetian Deep-Stack events. Look for him to make some upward movements today.

Peter
Monday, 09th of July 2007 03:07 PM
(Michael Cheser reporting)

During the break earlier, I was perusing the seating assignments for today's session. I stumbled upon the following anomaly for Table 57:

Seat 5 - Peter Neff
Seat 6 - Peter Karall
Seat 7 - Peter Dawson
Seat 8 - Peter Skouteris

I spoke with them briefly and the entire table got a great laugh out of it. There was a hearty round of "Hi Peter! I'm Peter!" Then the cards went back in the air and it was all business again.

Vinny Vinh
In other Peter news, I saw Peter Feldman bust another player with his set. He absorbed the other guy's 15K stack and now has about 47K and is one of the early chip leaders.

Phil Hellmuth made his grand entrance, dressed in a Nascar suit and carrying a helmet. At 2:50pm, just a half hour into level 2, he took his throne at Table 78, the ESPN cameras eating it up. I'll post his bustout hand and comments as soon as they occur. Ha Ha.

Vinny Vinh has somehow managed to buy in before the deadline and is seated and playing.  Like a train wreck, this is both sad and fascinating, and we'll keep an eye on him to track his behavior, erratic or otherwise.

Gus Hansen
Monday, 09th of July 2007 01:43 PM
(Michael Cheser reporting)

Michael Binger arrived 45 minutes late, but is now seated and playing.

Don Zewin doubled up with the Destiny Hand: his pocket aces stayed ahead of his neighbor's pocket kings. His opponent is out and Zewin essentially gets to play the Main Event with twice the stack as all the other players.

There are numerous tables with two recognizable faces. During my first pass through the tournament room, I only saw one in which I knew three. Table 151 has:

Seat 2 - Cyndy Violette
Seat 3 - David Benyamine
Seat 6 - Isaac Haxton

Tuan Le and Karina Jett
Vinny Vinh is in the house! I saw him chatting with a friend who was playing in the main tournament room. I was rapidly concluding that Vinh was not playing today when that hunch was confirmed, as one of the security officers realized he was not playing and asked him to leave.

There were ten tables in use out in the player pavilion (tent). Some of the professionals stuck out there are Gus Hansen, Karina Jett, Tuan Le, Dan Heimiller, and Michael Gracz. The temperature was not unreasonable, though. Obviously, the staff wants to consolidate all tournament players into the Amazon Room. The table break order, though, begins with table 1, which is in the main room. So they are breaking the early number tables in the Amazon Room and then moving the players from the pavilion, one table at a time.

Jack Effel, Alfonse D'Amato, Jeffrey Pollack
Monday, 09th of July 2007 12:41 PM
(Michael Cheser reporting)

At 12:05pm, Alfonse D'Amato, Chairman of the Poker Players Alliance, took the microphone from Jeffrey Pollack and asked those in the Amazon Room: "Should we have the right to play poker on the internet?  Let me hear what you think!"  That met with an enthusiastic round of applause.  "Now, good luck to you all, and shuffle up and deal 'em!"

Today's main ESPN table features Jamie Gold, who has respectfully shown up on time.  The secondary feature table will include Phil Hellmuth, who naturally has not arrived yet.  As per usual, he will probably show up fashionably late, to make sure that all the cameras can give him complete attention.

Gus Hansen walked briskly by me, looking for his table humber and saying to a friend, "I have a feeling it's in the f***ing tent."  He was f***ing right.

Hank Azaria, the well-known actor and one of the voices of the Simpsons, is here and playing.  Azaria is no poker slouch and is among the few celebrities that have serious game.  I, for one, would not be surprised at all to see him do well.

Jack Ury, age 94
Mikael Thuritz, a Swedish poker professional, arrived at table 180, only to find someone sitting in his assigned seat.  Upon examining his seat card, the dealer pointed out that it was for the first Day 1 session, Day 1A.  "But I just registered and paid yesterday," said Thuritz, puzzled.  A floorperson came over, took one look at his seat ticket, and said to a senior floorman, "We have another one!"  Thuritz was escorted to the registration window to get things sorted out.  Another one, huh?  That required further investigation.  I cornered the floorman and asked what was going on.  He explained that a number of players who registered yesterday were inexplicably given seat assignments for prior days that had already been played.  I asked how many there were so far.  "About twenty," replied the floorman, as he squirmed away from me and tended to a (fabricated) urgent issue on the other side of the room.  Do I really look like Dan Rather?

Jack Ury is playing in today's session.  The man is 94 years old and is believed to be the oldest player in WSOP history.

(Michael Cheser reporting)

Things should get under way in about 15 minutes.  According to the very latest number from Harrah's, there are 1,512 players registered for today's session, so we have already exceeded 6,000 in total.  New players may register up to the conclusion of level one, or about 2:00pm.  Within a couple hours of that time, we should have our official final count, as well as the release of a payout schedule.

We have officially made it through three of the four flight days for day one of the 2007 World Series of Poker.

Day 1C began with 1,743, the largest flight day by far. That brings the total number of players so far for this WSOP at 4,575. While the total number of registrants for the fourth and final day one flight are unknown, it's looking like the main event field will fall between 6,000 and 6,500, well short of last year's field, which featured almost 9,000 players.

Some notables left in play after the first three flights and eager to begin play on their day 2 flight (in no particular order):

Joe Hachem (2006 WSOP event 5)
Scotty Nguyen
Evelyn Ng
Mark Seif
Sabyl Cohen
Joe Hachem
Bill Chen
David Pham
Berry Johnston
Billy Baxter
Deanna Dozier
Huck Seed
Lamar Wilkinson
John Spadavecchia
Dustin Woolf
Bobby Baldwin

Of course, that's just a small selection, as thousands will remain as we head into the first day two flight on Tuesday.

Official chip counts for the end of the third day 1 flight may be viewed by clicking here.
