Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:49 PM

I have an intuition that this heads-up match will not last long.  They are both aggressive players and don't like to back down.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:48 PM

The piles of cash are now on the table and we are getting started with heads-up play.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:42 PM

A bit of useless information: the combined age of our two finalists is 46.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:40 PM

We are waiting while the two players are interviewed by the new WPT hostess and then they will do the money presentation.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:38 PM

The chip counts for the two heads-up players are astonishingly close:

Cory Carroll - 3,125,000
Jonathan Little - 3,050,000

Darrell Dicken - 3rd Place
Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:35 PM

Cory calls from the big and Dicken checks.  Flop comes 2 4 K .  Cory bets 100K, Darrell moves all-in, and Cory calls.  Dicken has 3 5 for the open-end straight draw.  And Carroll has K J for top pair.  Turn and river come 9 7 .  Carroll wins the pot and Darrell Dicken is eliminated in 3rd place, earning $259,369.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:30 PM

Jonathan raised to 180K from the small blind and Cory calls from the big.  Flop came A T 5 .  Jonathan bets 250K and Carroll throws his hand away.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:29 PM

Cory limps from the small and Darrell checks from the big.  Both check the 8 T K flop.  All hell broke loose on the 7 turn.  Carroll bet 80K, Dicken raised to 240K, and Carroll moved all-in.  Dicken called.  Carroll had 6 9 for the straight and Dicken had 8 7 for two pair.  The 9 river didn't help Dicken, so Carroll doubles up.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:24 PM

Darrell raised to 180K from the button and Jonathan Little moved all-in.  Dicken folded.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:22 PM

Cory Carroll raised to 160K from the button and Darrell Dicken calls from the small.  Out came the 5 4 A and both checked.  With the 3 turn, Darrell fires 200K and Carroll folds.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:20 PM

Jonathan Little raised to 175K and Cory Carroll raised to 550K.  Little moved all-in and Carroll called.  Little had A J and Carroll had K Q .  The board came 8 T 5 5 2 .  Jonathan's ace high wins the pot and he doubles up again to 2.2M.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:16 PM

Darell Dicken limped from the small and Jonathan Little checked from the big.  On the 6 8 6 flop, Dicken bet 80K and Little called.  On the 7 turn, Dicken moved in and Little called.  Dicken showed 7 5 for a pair of sevens and an open-end straight draw.  Little had T 8 for a pair of eights and a gutshot.  The K river kept Jonathan ahead and he doubles up to about 1.1M.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:11 PM

Jonathan raised to 175K and Dicken moved all-in.  Little filed for a divorce from his cards.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 08:04 PM

Cory checked from the small blind and Darrell checks from the big.  Flop A 2 3  and both check.  On the Q turn, Cory checks, Darrell bets, and Cory calls.  On the 9 river, Cory checks, Darrell bets 200K, and Cory calls.  Darrell throws his hand in and Cory wins the pot.

We are on another ten-minute break.

Jonathan moved all-in again, this time from the small blind.  No call from Carroll.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:40 PM

Darrell uncharacteristically limped from the button and then Jonathan Little moved all-in.  Carroll and Dicken got out of the way.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:39 PM

Darrell Dicken has won two small pots in a row, once on the flop and once before.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:33 PM

Cory Carroll raised to 180K and Darrell Dicken called.  On the flop of A 7 3 , Cory bet 205K and Dicken raised to 615K, dramatically sliding several stacks of chips out.  Carroll conceded the hand.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:31 PM

The blinds have been raised to 30K/60K with a 10K ante.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:30 PM

Darrell raised to 120K and Jonathan moved all-in.  Darrell pondered it but decided to pick a better spot to try knocking the short stack out.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:30 PM

Approximate chip counts:

Cory Carroll - 3.2M
Darrell Dicken - 2.5M
Jonathan Little - 800K

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:28 PM

Is it safe to say that Cory Carroll has been running well recently?

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:27 PM

Jonathan Little raised to 120K and Cory Carroll came over the top for 340K.  Little went all-in.  Carroll did some math in his head and then decided to call.  Carroll had A 5 and pumped his fist when he saw Little's J 8 .  The flop came ... are you kidding me? ... A 5 5 .  Carroll flopped the full house and Little just stared in disbelief.  The K turn and 9 river were just a formality.  Carroll doubled up tp 3.2M and Little becomes the table short stack.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:20 PM

Darrell raised to 120K and Jonathan popped it to 370K from the small blind.  Dicken said no.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:17 PM

Cory called from the small and Dicken raised to 140K, which Carroll called.  Flop came T K J .  Cory checked, Darrell bet 200K, and Cory called.  Both checked the J turn.  On the 2 river, Cory bet 320K and Darell called.  Cory showed trip jacks but Dicken had A Q for the flopped Broadway straight.  Dicken drags the 1.5M pot!

Richard Kirsch - 4th Place
Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:11 PM

Darrell Dicken raised to 120K and Jonathan Little came over the top to 370K.  Dicken folded.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:09 PM

And just three hands later, Richard Kirsch open shoves all-in from the button and Jonathan Little called from the small blind.  Kirsch had A T and Little had A J .  Kirsch needed a ten but watched the board drop 2 K 9 3 9Richard Kirsch finishes in 4th place, earning $172,912.

Phil Ivey - 5th Place
Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 07:04 PM

Well, that just changed!  Jonathan Little raised to 120K and Phil Ivey called from the blind.  Flop came 3 8 8 and both checked.  The turn was the J .  Ivey bet 150K and Little raised all-in, which Ivey called right away.  Little showed A 8 for trip eights and Ivey had Q 2 for the flush.  Ivey was in great shape to double up, as Little had ten outs to win the hand.  Unfortunately for Ivey, the A was one of them, making Little's full house.  Phil Ivey is eliminated in 5th place, taking home $129,684.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:58 PM

For the audience right now, this is sleep-inducing poker.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:56 PM

And now Phil called from the small blind, Dicken raised from the big blind, and Ivey let it go again.  With about 600K or so left, and the blinds at 20K/40K, I expect to see Phil push in soon, either preflop or on a flop that he hits top pair or a big draw, rather than letting his chips dwindle down any further.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:54 PM

Darrell raised to 120K from under the gun and Phil Ivey called from the big.  Flop was 6 7 9 .  Ivey checked, Dicken bet 120K, and Ivey tossed his cards in.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:50 PM

Darrell raised to 120K from the small blind and Richard Kirsch called from the big blind.  Flop was 6 3 3 .  Dicken bet 120K and Kirsch folded.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:49 PM

We had that big showdown and elimination on the second hand of the night, and now we are on the 46th hand, without any called all-ins since.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:47 PM

It will be interesting to see what Dicken had that hand.  To push all-in over the top of the tightest player at the table (and who has about two thirds of your own chip stack) requires a very big hand or a tremendous amount of guts.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:44 PM

Richard Kirsch raised to 150K from under the gun and it folded to Darrell Dicken in the big blind, who thought for a moment and then announced that he was all-in.  Kirsch looked impressed.  After about 30 seconds of consideration, he folded and began to count his remaining stack.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:42 PM

A few familiar faces in the crowd: J.C. Alvarado, Layne Flack, and Paul Darden.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:40 PM

Phil Ivey wins a small pot from Darrell Dicken.  Then Jonathan raised and won the next pot uncontested.  They are playing small ball poker right now, but it is only a matter of time before two players pick up real hands at the same time.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:37 PM

Jonathan raises and wins the blinds and antes.  Then Darrell did the same.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:36 PM

Richard Kirsch got a walk in the big blind.  On the next hand, Phil Ivey raised to 120K and won the blinds and antes.

The Final Table

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:33 PM

Phil Ivey raised to 120K from the small blind and Darrell Dicken called from the big.  The flop came 7 3 3 .  Ivey led out with 180K and Dicken folded.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:32 PM

Richard Kirsch announced a raise and made it 200K to go.  The others got out of the way quickly.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:30 PM

We are going again now with 20K/40K blinds and a 5K ante.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:29 PM

Something seems a little fishy with those counts.  I expected Phil Ivey to have more than that.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:29 PM

Here are the chip counts that were announced:

Richard - 915K
Jonathan - 930K
Cory - 2.1M
Phil - 655K
Darrell - 1.575M

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:15 PM

Richard Kirsch won a small pot from Jonathan Little in a blind versus blind encounter.  We are now on a TV time out for ten minutes (whisper ... check back in about 15-20 minutes).

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:09 PM

The third time was the charm.  Phil Ivey raised to 70K and everyone folded.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:08 PM

Phil Ivey tried the same thing, raising to 70K.  This time, Jonathan Little, in the big blind, popped it to 300K and Ivey folded without hesitation.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:06 PM

Phil Ivey raised to 70K and Darrell Dicken re-raised to 240K.  Ivey shuffled his chips for awhile before letting his hand go.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:02 PM

I have no doubt that the other players respect Richard Kirsch's bets and raises more than anyone else's at the table.  But I fear that his transparency is going to bite Kirsch badly in a future big hand with one of these professionals.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 06:00 PM

It folded around to Dicken in the small blind, who raised to 72K.  Richard Kirsch, in the big blind, calmly announced that he was all-in.  Dicken parted from his cards instantly.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:58 PM

Cory raised from the button to 75K and Dicken called from the big.  On the 3 Q 4 , Dicken checked, Carroll bet 145K and Dicken called.  Both checked the Q turn.  On the 6 river, Dicken took the initiative and bet a smallish 140K.  Carroll was having none of that and let his cards go.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:54 PM

Darrell tried again and raised to 75K, this time getting called by Ivey in the big blind.  Flop was 9 8 3 .  Ivey checked, Dicken bet 100K, and Ivey called.  The K came out as the turn card.  Ivey checked, Dicken bet 150K and Ivey threw his cards away.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:51 PM

Dicken raised to 75K and Carroll called from the big blind.  The flop came J T 3 .  Carroll checked, Dicken bet 100K, and Carroll check-raised to 270K.  Dicken folded.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:45 PM

Cory Carroll raised to 75K from the button and Darrell Dicken called from the big blind.  The board came K 2 Q and both players checked.  They again checked the A turn (audience murmured).  Once more, they checked it down on the 8 river.  Cory showed A-2 for two pair and that was good enough.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:41 PM

Jonathan Little raised to 60K from the button and Phil Ivey called from the big blind.  The flop came Q 3 J .  Ivey checked, Little bet 120K, and Ivey called.  Turn 2 .  Ivey checked, Little bet some amount (the announcer was unclear) and Ivey gave it some long thought before folding.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:36 PM

On a flop of 5 8 T , Darrell checked, Richard bet 100K, and Darrell folded.  Kirsch flashed Darrell a ten before throwing his cards in.  Throughout the tournament, Richard Kirsch has shown his cards to the table more than any other player I've observed.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:31 PM

Jonathan Little raised to 70K and Darrell Dicken called from the big blind.  On the J 2 3 flop, Dicken checked, Little bet 120K, and Dicken, after a long while, pushed out a whopping 360K total.  Little folded immediately.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:28 PM

The players are taking turns winning small pots.  Richard Kirsch just took the last one down by betting on the flop.

Amnon Filippi - 6th Place
Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:22 PM

Amnon Filippi raised to 70K and got callers in Cory Carroll and Phil Ivey.  Flop came K T J .  Ivey checked, Filippi bet 135K, Cory raised to 355K, Ivey folded and Amnon Filippi moved all-in.  Carroll called right away.  Filippi turned over A Q for the flopped nut straight.  Carroll had A 7 for the nut flush draw.  The audience groaned when they saw the red 6 and then erupted when the 2 hit the felt.  Cory Carroll makes his flush and eliminates Amnon Filippi on the second hand of the night.  Amnon Filippi finishes in 6th place, earning $100,865.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:17 PM

Cory Carroll took the first pot from Phil Ivey in a battle of the blinds.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:14 PM

And that was the quickest blind raise I've ever seen.  Before play even started, they announced that we will be at 12K/24K with a 3K ante.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:13 PM

Shuffle up and deal!

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 05:07 PM

Linda Johnson did the player introductions and Phil Ivey got a thunderous round of applause from this crowd.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 04:58 PM

All the players are here now and seated.  Linda Johnson is coaching the audience and the tournament staff are briefing the players about TV procedures.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 04:35 PM

Also, tonight the WPT introduces their new hostess, Layla Kayleigh.  She is a 23-year-old model from the UK, with plenty of radio and TV experience.  With luck, she will fill the role better than the past two years' hostesses.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 04:27 PM

Blinds will start today at 10K/20K with a 2K ante.  So Amnon Filippi, the short stack, has about 28 big blinds.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 04:25 PM

Notice that first place earns more than ten times the amount of sixth place.

Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007 04:23 PM

Here is what we are playing for today:

We are set to start this WPT final table in about 45 minutes.

Just last month, Carlos Mortensen became the first person to win both the World Series of Poker main event and the World Poker Tour championship, finishing in first place in the WPT's $25k championship and taking home almost $4 Million in the process. That event marked the climax of the 5th season of the World Poker Tour, and this, the Mirage Poker Showdown, is the first event of the 6th, with the winner taking home over $1 Million.

We've reached the final table, with just six players remaining in a fight for a seven digit payday. Here are the players in order of seat position:

Richard Kirsch
1 Seat - Richard Kirsch - 810,000 in chips

Richard has been playing poker for more than ten years. A Director of Information Systems by trade, Kirsch has experienced a fair share of success at the card table, his biggest cash coming in the 2005 World Series of Poker $10,000 World Championship. He placed 67th in that event, good for $124,835 in winnings.

Richard heads to the final table today with more than enough ammo to give himself one heck of a chance at his biggest payday yet.

Jonathan Little
2 Seat - Jonathan Little - 956,000 in chips

Jonathon may very well be a player to keep your eye on in the coming years. Between January of 2006 and today, he has racked up more than half a million dollars in major tournament cashes. Not bad for a year's work, eh? Four of those cashes have come since April of this year, the largest of those coming in an event preceding the WPT World Championship that garnered Jonathon almost $150,000. Jon's biggest cash yet was a result of a 5th place finish at the PokerStars World Poker Tour Caribbean Adventure earlier this year, good for over $300k. Will Jon have the stamina to turn his sizeable stack into his first WPT title?

Cory Carroll
3 Seat - Cory Carroll - 1,235,000 in chips

Cory heads to the day with a massive stack, second only to Phil Ivey. This is the fourth WPT event in which Cory has played, but by far the farthest he has yet to reach. Cory is most recognized for his stellar performance at Ceasar's in Las Vegas, where he took down first place in the World Series of Poker Circuit event, and over half a million dollars! He's on a rush, but can he overcome the likes of the player to his left to take down his first World Poker Tour victory?

Phil Ivey
4 Seat - Phil Ivey - 1,395,000 in chips

To most, this man needs no introduction. His stoicism not withstanding, Ivey is one of the most successful professional poker players of all time, having racked up close to $7 Million in tournament wins to date, not to mention 5 World Series of Poker bracelets. But, even with Phil's skill and undisputed clout at the table, he has yet to take home a World Poker Tour title.

Seeing as he's got the chip lead as play starts for the day, could this be Phil's time? And, what's more, will he smile for the camera when he wins?

Darrell Dicken
5 Seat - Darrell Dicken - 1,203,000 in chips

Better known as "Gigabet" to his friends, Darrell made a name for himself online before becoming known on the live circuit. But that's not to say he should be discounted as a mere "online player." Darrell has more than $1 Million to show for himself at the live felt, and that is by no means a small feat. Heading into today's final table in third place, and not far behind the chip leader, at that, Darrell has more than a good chance at taking down first place in this event, almost doubling his all-time live winnings in the process.

Amnon Filippi
6 Seat - Amnon Filippi - 571,000 in chips

And, finally, Amnon Filippi takes his place at the final table in the last seat, and with the shortest stack. While not necessarily a household name, Amnon has already amassed more than half a million dollars in live tournament wins. However, only one of those cashes has been in first place. Amnon still has a good chance, and with the skill level at this table there is certain to be ample opportunity for him to quickly double up and get off to a nice start to what could be his largest payout yet.
