Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:45 PM

I think we finished with 144 players remaining.  I will post the official end-of-day chip counts as soon as I can get them from the tournament staff.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:44 PM

On the final hand, James Van Alstyne busted when his pocket aces got cracked.  In my humble opinion, it is better to get knocked out on the final hand of the first day than on the first hand of the second day.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:41 PM

And that does it.  Time has expired for today.  Players are finishing up their final hands and tournament staff are distributing chip bags to the tables.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:36 PM

We have just five minutes left on this fifth and final level of the day.  The board says we are down to 149 players, meaning that we lost more than half of the starting field of 309.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:35 PM

Kirk Morrison hung on valiantly today, recovering from having just 4K.  But he just got knocked out, ending his record run of consecutive WPT cashes.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:28 PM

With a board of 9 T 5 , Erik Lindgren moved all-in for 8K and J.J. Liu went back into the tank.  They had to call the clock on her again.  Finally, she called.  Lindgren had J J and Liu had Q 9 .  The A turn and 5 river kept Lindgren ahead, doubling him up.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:11 PM

Davidson Matthew has somehow sprung up to be among the chip leaders, with about 125K.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 08:10 PM

The rich just got richer.  Daniel Alaei with his monster stack got all-in with Eli Elezra.  Eli had A-K and Alaei had 8-8.  No help from the board, so Eli Elezra is eliminated and Alaei adds to his pile.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:54 PM

Jon Eaton has been eliminated.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:53 PM

Peter Feldman pushed in for his last 4.5K and Allen Kessler moved all-in for about 7K.  No other takers.  Kessler had T T and Feldman had Q J .  The flop came a dramatic J 9 8 , pairing Feldman's jack but giving Kessler the up-and-down straight draw.  The 7 turn completed the straight and the 4 river was meaningless.  "Sucked out on again," said Feldman as he strolled away.  I don't think that qualifies as a suckout, but oh well, Peter "Nordberg" Feldman is out.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:46 PM

Phil Ivey has been drifting downward.  The last time I checked, he had dropped below 40K.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:46 PM

Kirk Morrison, who was on life support with 4K a couple hours ago, has recovered nicely to be around 16K now.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:44 PM

Joe Tehan has been eliminated.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:43 PM

Daniel Alaei just busted Jean Gaspard and another player in the same hand to vault up to 120K in chips, possibly good for the overall chip lead.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:28 PM

Folded to him on the button, Brad Berman pushed all-in.  Then all hell broke loose between the small blind and big blind.  Finally, the small blind folded Q Q face up and the big blind showed A A .  Berman shrugged and turned over 4 5 .  The board came 8 K K 3 TBrad Berman has been eliminated.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:26 PM

Chau Giang has busted.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:14 PM

During the break, I walked all the tables looking for the biggest stacks I could find.  Here is what I came up with:

Shannon Shorr 112K
Geoff Sanford 105K
Darrell Dicken 101K

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 07:11 PM

We have just started our final level of the day: 300/600 blinds with a 50 ante.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:56 PM

End of level 4.  15-minute break.  Just 192 players left.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:55 PM

Darrell Dicken is still gobbling up chips at his table.  He is well over 90K.

Evelyn Ng, Chip Reese, David Singer,Kirk Morrison, John Phan
Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:51 PM

David Singer has been ousted.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:51 PM

Gavin Smith re-raised all-in with his last 8K but got the initial raiser to fold.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:42 PM

Joe Sebok is out.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:41 PM

John Phan busted when his 4-2 got in with A-2 on an A-4-2 flop.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:36 PM

Haralabos Voulgaris knocked out a player when his K-K held up against another player's A-K suited.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:23 PM

Kenna James just tried to order a drink from one of the Mirage tournament staff, who looked visibly annoyed, replying, "I don't serve cocktails, but I can maybe find you someone who does."  Once he was out of earshot, Kristy Gazes, at the same table, cracked up laughing and told Kenna he should have asked the guy what he does do.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:21 PM

J.J. Liu seems to be having a tough time with her decision-making today.  That makes three times that the table has had to call the clock on her that I have seen and she has folded each time.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:19 PM

Dan Harrington is no longer hanging on by a thread.  He is out.  Also, Scott Fischman is no longer in the tournament room, so it looks like he busted too.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:05 PM

A player in seat 6 raised to 1.5K and Johnny Chan, from the small blind, raised to 6K.  Seat 6 went over the top to 21K and Chan, after a long time being frozen, called.  The flop came K 5 8 .  Chan checked, seat 6 fired 18K and Chan check-raised all-in for another 15K or so.  Unbelievably, seat 6 folded.  Chan scooped the huge pot.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:02 PM

Amir Vahedi is no longer where he was sitting, so he must have busted.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 06:01 PM

Tommy Vu moved in with the last of his chips with K-9 and got called by a player with 8-8.  The board came J-6-4-J-8.  Tommy Vu is out.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:49 PM

Darrell "Gigabet" Dicken is doing well, with about 70K.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:48 PM

One player raised to 1200, another re-raised to 4K, and then Shawn Sheikhan, after some thinking, tossed 9K into the pot and said, "Uh oh", as if he did it accidentally.  The first raiser got out quickly, but the second raiser moved all-in.  Sheikhan shook his head and said, "I think I'm beat.  But I call."  Shawn showed Q Q and flinched when he saw his opponent's K K .  The board came 9 4 5 T AShawn Sheikhan has been eliminated.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:38 PM

According to Kathy Liebert in seat 1, David Pham (seat 3) told the table that he was bored, so he left his chipstack to get blinded down while he went down to the craps table for awhile.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:34 PM

Dan Harrington just lost most of his chips when he went all-in on a 6 2 T flop with Q Q and got called by Tom Pniak with A A .  The two jacks that came on the turn and river couldn't help "Action Dan", who is down to a miniscule 1500 now.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:27 PM

We are now under way.  238 players remain.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:15 PM

Chad Brown is wearing a T-shirt that reads: "It's not peer pressure.  It's just your turn."

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:12 PM

We are on break again.  When players return, it will be at level 4: 200/400 blinds with a 25 ante.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 05:01 PM

Kirk Morrison, the runner-up at the WPT Championship, is beginning to circle the drain, with about 4K left.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:50 PM

Another bustout: Mori Eskandani.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:36 PM

Kristy Gazes has been chewing up her table.  Last time I checked, she was nearly to 70K in chips.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:35 PM

Justin Bonomo just crashed and burned.  We are down to 249 players.

Gavin Smith, Peter Feldman, Barry Greenstein
Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:34 PM

I'm pretty sure I just caught Barry Greenstein dozing at the poker table.  My supporting evidence: his eyes were closed, his head was resting on his hands, and he jerked awake when it was time to ante for the next hand.  Get some rest the night before, Barry!

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:19 PM

There is a table here where a representative from the World Poker Association is giving out info on their organization and signing up new members.  According to their website, their mission is "to promote professionalism in poker worldwide that supports the highest standards of ethical conduct in tournament poker activities."  Officers in this non-profit include Joe Hachem, Chris Bigler, and Marcel Luske.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:14 PM

Phil Ivey is cruising, now with about 55K in chips.  It has been a little while since he has gone deep in an event, so maybe this will be the one.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 04:12 PM

Jeff Madsen just went busto.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:56 PM

They have just announced the payout schedule:

PlacePayout
1$1,066,295
2$561,369

19-27$17,292

Then winner also receives a $25K entry into next April's WPT World Championship event.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:45 PM

I cannot tell a lie.  You are receiving no updates right now because I am eating a gigantic turkey burger.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:40 PM

Break is over.  Players are now in level 3: same 100/200 blinds but now with a 25 ante.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:25 PM

Players are on their second 15-minute break.  264 remain out of the 309.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:17 PM

Alright, who was the genius that scheduled this poker event within the race and sports book on the day of the Preakness???  It is wall-to-wall people here and most of them are here to watch the horse races, not the card races.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:14 PM

Jeff Madsen just ran into pocket aces and has been crippled down to about 1500.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:13 PM

More bustouts to report: Thomas Wahlroos, J.C. Tran, and Cyndy Violette.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 03:02 PM

Two big, tall bustouts to report: Jean-Robert Bellande and Greg "FBT" Mueller.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:51 PM

Patrik Antonius just put on his sunglasses and headed away from the tournament room.  So again, without actually witnessing the event, I must conclude that he has busted.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:50 PM

Daniel Negreanu is over in the audience posing with fans who want to take their picture with him.  You see, the thing is, we aren't on break.  That would mean that Daniel Negreanu is out.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:40 PM

Where there once was Vanessa Rousso, there is now someone else.  Therefore, Vanessa Rousso has busted.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:38 PM

Paul McCaffrey was seen leaving the tournament area with a look on his face that told me he's not coming back.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:35 PM

Joe Tehan just doubled up to nearly 40K.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:35 PM

Mike Wattel, who made the final table of last month's WPT Championship, busted out when his pocket aces got run down by a flush draw.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:22 PM

Erik Seidel has nearly 45K in chips.  He is much overdue for a big finish.  Maybe this event will be it.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:21 PM

The official number of entrants in this year's event is 309, of which 290 remain.  I will post the payout schedule as soon as it's announced.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 02:20 PM

On a final board of 3 2 A 7 Q and more than 20K in the pot, Allen Cunningham moved all-in with his last 9K and J.J. Liu went into the tank.  They finally called the clock on her and she folded in disgust.

Mirage tournament room (race and sports book)
Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:58 PM

Phil Ivey has over 30K.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:55 PM

Players have resumed now at level 2: 100/200 blinds.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:40 PM

We have just completed the first level and players are on a 15-minute break.  The tournament board does not reflect it, but I spoke with one of the tournament staff and they said that so far, nine players have busted.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:32 PM

J.C. Tran's quest to defend his Player of the Year title has hit a bit of a pothole.  He has less than 5K in chips right now and doesn't look happy about that.  Also, Gabe Thaler and Tuan Le have less than half their starting chips.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:22 PM

I have it on good word that Paul Lee and Sam Grizzle have both busted.  They are the first that I know of.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:21 PM

Up to 306 now.  Brandon Adams just got here and he said he planned to register.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:03 PM

The announcer just stated that new players will be able to register only until the end of the first level, not the second.  So there is just 35 minutes left for new registration, which pretty much seals the fate that this year will have fewer players than last year.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 01:01 PM

Well, according to the board, there are still 300 players remaining out of the 300 that started.  That means no player has busted out yet in nearly an hour of play.  Does that seem reasonable to you?  Yeah, me neither.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:59 PM

Flaminio Malaguti just got pocket aces and got handsomely rewarded with them.  When he got in a raising war with another player, the other player offered a $1000 cash sidebet as to who had the better hand.  Malaguti agreed, the other player folded Q-Q face up and Malaguti showed his rockets to drag the pot and pocket ten Benjamins.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:48 PM

We just reached a total of 300 players.  I overheard the tournament staff strategizing about breaking the tables from the poker room toward the sports book overflow area, presumably so they can utilize the poker room for regular cash games.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:46 PM

Gavin Smith just took down a monster pot when his 7-6 made two pair on the river.  He left his opponent with just about 5K.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:33 PM

David Daneshgar and Steve Brecher tangled over a board of Q 6 5 8 K .  On the river, Brecher checked, Daneshgar bet 6K, and Steve made the quick call.  Brecher's Q Q had David's Q J crushed and he took down the 22K pot.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:22 PM

I know it's still early, but I have to make a preliminary declaration that this is a disappointing turnout.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:20 PM

My first sweep of the tournament tables has yielded the following information: tables are currently ten-handed.  Many of the tables are freaking loaded with big-name players (some with as many as seven).  Over in the main poker room, there is a patch of 15 tables with dealers and chips, but no players.  The tournament board now says 277 players have paid and registered.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:09 PM

Ready or not, here we come!  Shuffle up and deal!

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 12:08 PM

There are way too many familiar faces to try naming them.  Players are signing their season 6 WPT releases and the announcer is getting a few details out of the way.  We are just a moment or two away from getting this show on the road.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 11:59 AM

There were 384 entrants last year, and I would expect a higher turnout than that this year.  Players can register up to the end of level 2, so we won't know the final head count until about 3:15pm or so.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 11:56 AM

According to the tournament clock, we will start in ten minutes.  And I can't confirm the accuracy, but they are only showing 246 players registered thus far, which seems very very low to me.

Saturday, 19th of May 2007 11:42 AM

Dealers are seated, chips are stacked and ready, and players are beginning to mill about.  The funniest thing I've seen so far is Scott Fischman wearing an FTP yarmulke.  Who knew that FTP even made those?

A few parameters for this event: players will start with 20K in chips.  First blind level will be 50/100.  Blind levels will last 90 minutes.  We are slated to play five full levels today.  As this is a five-day event, I think it unlikely that we will have any super-long sessions.

Play is scheduled to get started in about 45 minutes. There are 30 tables in the main poker room and a spillover section of 20 more tables in the sports book. So the Mirage can accommodate up to 500 players in this first event of WPT's season six.
