Page 2
The first 250 players compete today in this WPT $10,000 main event.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 11:17 PM

I'm signing off for the night.  I will try to get a full chipcount list for the 70 survivors before we start Day 1 Flight 2 tomorrow at 11:15AM PST.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 11:13 PM

David Williams surged ahead on the final hand to pass Paul McCaffrey by a nose.  Final chipcount for the day had David Williams leading the tournament with 188.9K and Paul McCaffrey in second place with 183.7K.  David Williams wins the $10,000 bonus.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 11:10 PM

We are done for the night.  70 players survived.  They are counting chips, then bagging and tagging them.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 11:02 PM

Gavin Smith has just been eliminated.  He pushed preflop with T 9  and ran up against pocket jacks.  The board never came close to helping him and he becomes the 16th Star to go supernova today.

Paul McCaffrey
Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:53 PM

Unless something huge happens in these last 15 minutes, Paul McCaffrey is poised to win the $10,000 chip leader bonus.  By my count, he has nearly 175K in chips and a nearly 50K lead over the next biggest stack.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:49 PM

Just 10 of the original 25 Shooting Stars remain.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:47 PM

Well, that was fun.  No, really, it was.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:46 PM

Phil Hellmuth nearly made it through Day 1.  But no.  He reraised all-in with the last of his 29K with A K  and got called by the player to his left with A A .  Phil decided not to stick around to see if he was covered (he was) or how the board came.  For the record, it came T 7 3 4 J and Phil Hellmuth is out.  He was last seen near the front exit.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:33 PM

The announcer has just reminded the players that the chip leader at the end of this session will earn a $10,000 cash bonus.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:29 PM

There is just 38 minutes of play remaining in this Day 1 Flight 1.  79 players remain.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:28 PM

Largely due to that big hand about 30 minutes ago, David Williams is up to 110K in chips and Peter Feldman is down to 94K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:26 PM

Phil Hellmuth just lost a 33K pot when he checked on the river with the board reading 8 9 3 4 7 , his opponent checked too and showed A Q .  The ace high must have been good, as Hellmuth slid his cards into the muck and began talking to himself.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:07 PM

We just began our last level of the night: 500/1000 with a 100 ante.  82 players remain.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:06 PM

J.C. Tran is up to 105K and Gavin Smith is down to 18K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 10:05 PM

David Williams just made the most unbelievable call.  On a board of 7 Q T 4 , Williams checked, Peter Feldman bet 11K, and David called.  The river came 2 .  Williams checked, Feldman bet 20K, and Williams immediately called.  Feldman mucked in disgust and once the cards were safely dead, Williams flipped the K J  in Feldman's direction, flaunting his king-high!

Monday, 12th of March 2007 09:43 PM

Monday, 12th of March 2007 09:36 PM

Now that we are down to 90 players, we have switched to nine-player tables, instead of ten.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 09:34 PM

J.J. Liu just tripled up when her A-K unsuited outran two other players with K-Q suited on a king-high board.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 09:33 PM

Josh Arieh got all-in on a flop of T-4-2 and showed T-8.  Unfortunately, his opponent flopped a set of fours and Josh Arieh has been sent home.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 09:27 PM

Allen Kessler has just busted.  He got all-in preflop with the Hilton sisters (QQ) against Dan Alspach's A-J unsuited.  The flop was safe but the ace on the turn was not and he is now using one of the media computers to check outgoing flights on Southwest.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 09:10 PM

We are back from break and at level 9: 400/800 with a 100 ante.  98 players remain.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:55 PM

I just overheard David Williams telling Erick Lindgren (who plays tomorrow) about a $5000 mistake he made.  On a hand a half hour ago, David thought he had put Cyndy Violette all-in on the river, but he had miscounted her chips and he accidentally left her with two green 25 chips, thus missing out on collecting her $5000 bounty, which was collected by another player on the following hand.  After relating this story, Erick Lindgren smiled and said, "Nice one ..."  The lesson to be learned, David, is to say "All-in" rather than just push chips out.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:50 PM

Only 3 minutes remain before a ten-minute break and a color-up.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:48 PM

And just like that, Chad Brown is outta here.  He moved all-in on a flop of 9 8 2 and got called.  Chad showed A 9  and his opponent had T T .  The K  turn and 4  river did not help him, so Chad Brown is sent to the rail.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:39 PM

We are down to 104 players remaining at 11 tables.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:36 PM

Likewise for Chad Brown.  He has a lot of physical chips in front of him, but unfortunately none of them are the pink 5000 chips and only a few are the blue 1000 chips.  He has dropped precipitously.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:34 PM

J.J. Liu has experienced a reversal of fortune.  After being up to 90K in chips or so, she has lost several hands to land back down in the 32K zone.  Ouch.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:23 PM

In a three-way all-in, Cyndy Violette was just eliminated to become the 12th Star to fall.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:13 PM

Peter Feldman, easily the biggest stack at his table (and perhaps the tournament), is playing bully poker.  Twice I saw him move all-in on the flop and push smaller stacks off their hands in disgust.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:10 PM

Josh Arieh, at about 25K in chips, has been moved to the left of Gavin Smith, who has about 58K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 08:09 PM

Phil Hellmuth is hovering around 33K and has maintained the largest audience from the rail.  Joe Sebok, at the same table, has dropped below 10K in chips and is starting to get that lean and hungry look.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:56 PM

Freddy Deeb
J.C. Tran has just busted Freddy Deeb.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:54 PM

We have just gone to level 8: 300/600 with a 75 ante.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:49 PM

Further eliminations include Alex Jacob and Devin Porter.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:46 PM

Gavin Smith lost a 27K pot when his QQ overpair lost to flopped set of fours.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:45 PM

After the dealer recounted both players stacks, it was determined that Scotty Nguyen had Brecher barely covered.  Steve Brecher has been eliminated.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:41 PM

Scotty Nguyen doubled up when his KK held up against Steve Brecher's QQ.  Brecher was left crippled after the hand.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:40 PM

Another Star has fallen.  On a board of T 9 6 A , she called down her last 17K in chips and showed K J for the flush and straight draws.  Her opponent showed A K  for top pair top kicker.  The 2  river meant that Liz Lieu has departed from the Bay 101 tournament.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:24 PM

A not-well-known fact is that each of the Stars competing in this tournament was paid $1500 for their participation.  So, in essence, their buy-in was just $8500 instead of $10K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:22 PM

Amnon Fillipi just came over to the media table and in an expletive-laced burst, told us all how badly he is playing.  According to him, he hates poker.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:19 PM

We are down to 122 players remaining on 13 tables.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:18 PM

In a moment of levity, Cyndy Violette arrived back to the poker room 15 minutes into level 7 to find her table broken and her chips gone.  She wandered around for a couple of minutes before Matt Savage beckoned her over the microphone to her new table.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:13 PM

Peter Feldman just eliminated Clonie Gowen in a monster pot.  Feldman had Gowen covered and, with 55K in chips already in the pot, moved all-in on a board of 8 K 7 T .  Clonie had the clock called on her and finally called, showing K Q , but Feldman had turned the straight with 6 9 .  The river Q  gave Clonie two pair but that was no help.  Clonie Gowen is gone and Peter Feldman shoots up to 150K and takes the overall chip lead.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 07:03 PM

We are underway at level 7 now.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 06:00 PM

After the first six levels, 16 out of the original 25 Stars are still alive in the tournament.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:56 PM

On the final hand before the break, Chad Brown won a huge pot to become one of the chip leaders.

Also on the final hand, Freddy Deeb got all-in preflop with his A-K against his opponent's A-7.  The flop was a disastrous 7-7-2, putting Freddy in a world of hurt.  But somehow, the turn and river came a miracle K-K and Freddy hit runner-runner to make a better full house and double up.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:51 PM

We have reached the one-hour dinner break.  After these hands conclude, we will resume at level 7 (250/500 with 50 ante) at approximately 6:53PM PST.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:49 PM

Clonie Gowen has rocketed up to 60K, while her table-mate David Williams has lost more than half his chips to drop down to 30K.

Chad Brown has come back nicely from the brink to have about 42K now.

Freddy Deeb is on life support with just 8K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:36 PM

Talk about a murderor's row of tough opponents: on table 25, Alex Jacob, Nam Le, and Allen Cunningham are sitting in the 3,4, and 5 seats, respectively.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:33 PM

Tuan Le was all-in for the fifth time.  This time, he got all-in preflop with rockets.  His opponent showed TT.  The flop was T96 and Tuan was in trouble.  The Q turn and 8 river were no help, and Tuan Le has been knocked out.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:31 PM

Phil Hellmuth is up to 40K now.  He just lost an 8K pot when his opponent made a flush on the river.  After seeing his beat, Phil whirled around and walked it off for about 20 seconds.  When he returned to his seat, he told the other player, "That's OK.  You're gonna give it all back to me anyway."

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:13 PM

Cyndy Violette doubled up when her AK flopped two pair and held up against her opponent's flush and straight draws.

Liz Lieu and David Pham
Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:11 PM

Liz Lieu has just eliminated David Pham.  All-in on a K97 flop, David Pham showed JJ and Lieu had AJ.  Liz spiked an A on the turn to take the lead and the 4 river left Pham without any chips.  Liz Lieu is the first Star to collect a bounty by eliminating another Star.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:05 PM

Blinds are at level 6 now: 200/400 with a 50 ante.  The dinner break will be in 46 minutes.

Alex Jacob and Nam Le
Monday, 12th of March 2007 05:02 PM

Alex Jacob, who was well over 40K earlier, has dropped down to 17K.  Nam Le, sitting to Jacob's left, is up to 40K now.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:54 PM

Tom McEvoy couldn't survive another all-in.  On a board of A 6 9 8 , Tom got all-in.  He turned up 9 8  for two pair but his opponent flipped over A 6  for a better two pair.  The T couldn't rescue the 1983 WSOP champion.  Tom McEvoy is out.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:40 PM

Josh Arieh tripled up when he flopped the nut straight and got all-in against two other players.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:38 PM

Chad Brown just doubled up to more than 20K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:31 PM

Tom McEvoy just tripled up again when he made a set of sixes on the river.  He still has just 7K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:29 PM

Tuan Le doubled up when his KQ held up against Kenna James' Q9.  The board came J T 2 K and Tuan Le made a flush with his Q .

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:26 PM

Daniel Negreanu just made his stand and it didn't work out for him.  All-in preflop, Daniel's AT lost to his opponent's AJ on a board of J739A.  Daniel Negreanu is out.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:22 PM

The final table for the $2000 NLHE event is being played here concurrently with the main event.  Todd Brunson has the chip lead.  Also at the table is Miami John Cernuto.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 04:09 PM

David Williams has surged up to 68K now, while Daniel Negreanu is edging into the danger zone, with just less than 5K.  At these blind levels (150/300/50) Daniel is severely restricted in his options.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:52 PM

I walked the tournament room during the break looking for the biggest stacks I could find.  Surprisingly, I was unable to find any beyond  the 60K range, so right now there are no runaway chip leaders.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:49 PM

As new players were allowed to buy-in and take a seat during the first two hours, this Flight 1 had a total of 209 players.  As of the end of level 4, we are down to 159.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:38 PM

We are at our second 15-minute break.  Players will return to level 5 and blinds of 150/300 and a 50 ante.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:36 PM

Tuan Le just survived another all-in confrontation when his AQ was better than A8 on a board of AK75 board.  The 3 river changed nothing and Tuan lives to all-in again.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:31 PM

T.J Cloutier, who doesn't play until tomorrow, just walked in and was besieged by fans and well-wishers.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:29 PM

Phil Hellmuth has made back what was blinded off and then some.  He has edged his stack up to 23K.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:22 PM

They're dropping like flies now.  Eli Elezra just got bounced from the tournament when his QQ lost a race with AK.  The board came 742K5 and Eli is gone.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:20 PM

Vanessa Rousso just busted when she got all-in preflop with her QQ against AKo.  The board came A7597 and she is headed to the rail.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:14 PM

Tuan Le just doubled up with his pocket jacks.

Robert Williamson III doubled up when his AA held up against his opponent's flush draw.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:12 PM

Hoyt Corkins just busted.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:11 PM

Kathy Liebert is out.  She got all-in on a 652 flop and showed 62, but her opponent had 55 for a set.  The turn and river of 8 and A couldn't rescue her.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 03:01 PM

On a board of K Q 6 3  and the pot containing 16K, Johan Storakers pushed his last 15K into the middle.  The player in seat 7 agonized for several minutes before mucking.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 02:59 PM

Tom McEvoy, severely shortstacked, just tripled up to 9K.  The board read AQTJ9 and his AQ was best.

Monday, 12th of March 2007 02:49 PM

There is nothing quite like the glare of a player who has just busted out.  An unknown player just gave me the stinkeye after being eliminated.  Like it's my fault you went all-in with AKo and got called by KK!

Monday, 12th of March 2007 02:45 PM

Bob Stupak has just been eliminated.
