Chris Lee - Chip leader at end of day 1B

Play has ended for today at the close of level 6. 25 tables remain, which means between 240 and 250 players. They are now going through the count and bag process. The list will be compiled and posted here, but if it is like yesterday, that will not happen until tomorrow morning. When I get the list, it will get posted here. I believe the chip leader today will be Chris Lee, who had about 180K last time I checked.

The remaining players from day 1A and day 1B will come back tomorrow at noon to resume play.

The Moneymaker Millionaire final is down to the final table of 9, but they will still be playing for a while.

Interview Insert: Here's an interesting tidbit from my interview with Humberto Brenes. Humberto speaks English well enough, but doesn't read and write it well enough to chat when playing online. When he's playing on PokerStars, he pays his kids $100/hour to sit with him and translate the chat for him, then translate his responses from Spanish to English and type them into the chat box! Humberto is a very good businessman and apparently takes care of his employees well. His family is here with him for this event and his oldest son will be starting at the University later this year.

Level 6 begins with 400/800 blinds and 100 antes. This is the last level for today.

Saturday, 06th of January 2007 07:30 PM

End of level 5 and players are on break. 31 tables remain, so somewhere between 300 and 310 players remain.

During level 5, Gary Solomons raised and Costa Psallidas called from the small blind. Flop was K J 8 with two clubs. Costa bet 2K and Gary called. Turn was another King and Costa checked, Gary fired 3K and Costa moved all in, for about 12K. Gary called, showing KQ for trip Kings. Costa showed pocket Jacks for Jacks-full and the lead. Gary was drawing slim, needing an 8 or the case King to improve. River was, in fact, the case King giving Gary quads and the pot, sending Costa to the rail with a helluva bad-beat story to tell.

John Phan got his last 1,850 all in with the board showing K 9 A 7 . His opponent called, showing 98 for a pair of 9s; John showed 97 for two pair. River was another 9 giving John the full house and completing his double-up.

Mark Bryan has squeeked into the lead with 120K; Chris Lee is at 116K and Paul Lui is at 114K. David Williams is coming on strong. He's up to 101K now.

Joe Hachem - busted

The action seems to have accelerated! Since the new level started:
Joe Hachem got his last chips in with A5 against Daniel Negreanu's QT. Daniel made Broadway to bust Joe. Isabelle Mercier and Humberto Brenes have also busted out. This has not been a good level for Team PokerStars!

Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy raised to 1,800 from the button and David Williams called from the big blind. Flop was 7 5 2 with two hearts and Cliff moved his last 8K in. David called, showing 8 2 for bottom pair with the flush draw. Cliff held AT (just two overcards) and needed help to survive. Last two cards were J 2 giving David trip deuces and the pot, sending Cliff to the rail.

Devin Porter has also been eliminated.

Chris Lee - Chip leader at end of level

Play has just resumed after a break with blinds at 300/600 and 75 antes. 39 tables remain, so less than 390 players.

Just before the break, I saw Erik Cajelais depart the tournament. Jennifer Tilly has also busted out, as has JC Tran and Amnon Filippi.

Chris Lee has taken the chip lead with about 105K. Paul Lui has continued to grow his stack and is at about 99K. Glen Bean is a close third with about 97K and Mark Bryan is right on his heels with 95K.

Gary Solomons

For Team PokerStars: Barry Greenstein has 42K and Victor Ramdin has about 26K.

Gary Solomons, formerly of PokerPages.com, is holding his own with about 32K.

Saturday, 06th of January 2007 05:11 PM

These are some late arrivals or folks I missed on the initial player list: Fabrice Soulier; Ralph Perry, Nam Le, Jess Newman, Mark Seif, Leif Force, Phil Laak, and Jennifer Tilly.

Saturday, 06th of January 2007 04:50 PM

Paul Lui - Chip leader at end of level

They are now playing in level 4 with 200/400 blinds and 50 antes and about an hour to go in this level. I cruised the room during the break and it appears that Paul Lui is still in the lead with 72K. There are quite a few players bunched up in the 60K range: Mark Bryan - 67K; Chris Lee - 66K; Alex Michaels - 65K; Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon - 65K; Les Waterhouse - 62K; Friedman Yuval - 61K; Robert Mizrachi - 60K.

Joe Hachem's table was broken and he landed at table 14, to the immediate left of Daniel Negreanu. As if there wasn't already a big enough crowd of spectators watching that table!

Saturday, 06th of January 2007 04:01 PM

I managed to cruise the room during the break at the end of level 2, and found that Paul Liu was in the lead with 68K in chips. Chris Lee was in second with 54K in chips. Of course this was about 45 minutes ago as I had to do another interview before I was able to get this posted.

My interviews are done for today, so I should be able to get more tourney updates. Wil Wheaton was unable to play this event, so no interview with him. Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier arrived late and is playing today, so no interview with him.

Saturday, 06th of January 2007 01:15 PM

I've been doing Team PokerStars interviews again today, but wanted to give you a quick update. They still don't have a final player count, but did take alternates today, which leads me to believe they had more than 500 players entering today. Once the dust settles and they can give us some final numbers, I'll get them posted for you.

Here are some of the names in today's field: James van Alstyne, Wendell Barnes, Alex Brenes, Humberto Brenes, Rhett Butler, Erik Cajelais, "Miami" John Cernuto, Tony Cousineau, John Duthie, Amnon Filippi, Layne Flack, Barry Greenstein, Gavin Griffin, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Joe Hachem, Allyn Jaffrey, Ed "EBJ" Jordan, Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy, Aaron Kanter, Curt Kohlberg, Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon, Karlo Lopez, Lee Markholt, Tom McEvoy, Nenad Medic, Isabelle Mercier, Michael "the Grinder" Mizrachi, Robert Mizrachi, Daniel Negreanu, Ralph Pecorale, John Phan, Devin Porter, John Racener, Victor Ramdin, Antonio Ribeiro, Jason "BigBird" Sagle, Shannon Shorr, Barry Shulman, Eugene Todd, JC Tran, Paul Wasicka, and David Williams.

Whew! And this doesn't include any who arrived fashionably late.

Chris Moneymaker hosts brunch for finalists

Today kicked off bright and early at 10am with a Press Conference/Brunch for the PokerStars Moneymaker Millionaire finalists. I actually got to sit at a table and eat with two WSOP Champions; Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker (actually, Chris was not eating, he was playing poker on his laptop).

The 27 finalists will begin play shortly for a first prize of $1 million. They are carving up a $2 million prize pool and the first player out is guaranteed to win at least $5,000. This final will take place concurrently with the second flight of the PCA, which will begin at noon.
