Monday, 23rd of October 2006 07:41 PM Romer Paloma moved in and got called. Romer held Q2 off and was dominated by KQ. Board came 3 4 9 4 7 and Romer is the bubble-boy, finishing in 28th place. Play has ended for the day with 36 minutes remaining in level 14. Play will resume tomorrow at noon. They will now count and bag the chips so as soon as we have the end of day results, they will be posted here. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 07:33 PM PokerHo vs. Arturo -- Both players checked the flop of 4 2 Q. A 9 came on the turn and they got all in. Arturo held KQ for top pair, but PokerHo held pocket 9s for the set. River was a 6 and Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon doubled up through the chip leader to about 230,000. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 07:30 PM One player has busted - he called all-in with AQ and his opponent held pocket Queens, which stood up. 28 players remain, one more to go, and play is still hand for hand. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 07:16 PM Level 14: Blinds 2K/4K with 500 ante. Play has resumed, still hand-for-hand with 29 players left. Chip counts from the break: |
| Arturo Kulczycki | 390,000 | | Scott Clements | 385,000 | | Gia Trinh | 240,000 | | Tim Anders | 208,000 | | Joe Tehan | 163,000 | | Bruce Williams | 127,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 120,000 | | Steven Buttery | 85,000 | | Mike Mitchner | 68,000 | | Blake Buffington | 67,000 | | Paul Rodrigues | 65,000 | | Dan Grolemund | 60,000 | | Chips in play: | 2,980,000 | | Average stack: | 102,759 |
Monday, 23rd of October 2006 07:01 PM Still 29 players remaining and level 13 had ended. Instead of taking a dinner break, they are taking a 10-minute break and then will resume play until they reach 27 and be done for the day. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:45 PM Bob Robbins and Mike Somich are both gone. Not sure when they went out, but they are now down to 29 players remaining and have begun playing hand-for-hand. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:40 PM Short-stack in seat 8 moved all in and Mark "PokerHo" Kroon called, showing A6 offsuit. The short-stack held AQ and Mark was counting out chips to pay him off, but the board came 4 4 K 4 J resulting in a split pot. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:37 PM Scott raised to 9,800 and seat 9 moved all-in for another 36K. Scott flashed an Ace and folded; the other player showed pocket 4s. 30 players remain - 3 more to go to the money. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:22 PM On a flop of J 5 K , seat 7 moved all in and Scott Clements called immediately. Seat 7 held pocket 5s for the set; Scott held A 4 for the flush draw. Last two cards were 2 8 and Scott completed his flush to bust the other player. The big stack gets bigger. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:18 PM Not to be out-done, Scott Clements just got all in against Alex Azadpeyma on a 9-high board. Scott held pocket Aces and Alex held pocket Jacks. Scott added all Alex's chips to his stack and Alex headed for the rail. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:13 PM Arturo and James van Alstyne take a flop of A 7 J -- both check. Turn was another Ace. Arturo seems to be having a bit of trouble with the language or mechanics, as he tapped the table and said "all-in" at the same time. The floor ruled this was a check and James checked behind him. River was a King and Arturo just said "all in" this time. James counted out his chips and finally pushed them forward, showing KQ off for Aces and Kings. Arturo rolled over pocket Jacks for the full house and dragged another pot. James headed for the rail. Arturo is definitely the chip leader with over 300K in chips, but it is hard to get a count as he stacks them in odd amounts. Scott Clements is probably second with about 250K. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 06:07 PM Mike Somich raised to 9K and Bruce Williams bumped it another 9K, which Mike called. Flop was 6 5 6 and both checked. Turn was 8 and Mike fired 20K, Bruce said all-in, and Mike called. Mike held pocket 9s and Bruce was ahead with pocket Kings. River was a 4 and Bruce doubled through. 35 players remain. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:59 PM Level 13: Blinds 1500/3000 with 400 antes. Play continues. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:51 PM 43 players remain - average stack is over 69K. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:45 PM Three players took the flop of 9 7 T . Mark "PokerHo" Kroon checked from the big blind, then Arturo Kulczycki bet 5K, which was called by the button. Then Mark jacked it up another 25K. Both opponents folded and Mark showed 86 offsuit for the flopped straight. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:32 PM Cards are back in the air with about 25 minutes remaining in level 12. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:21 PM They have finally busted out the last woman, Monica Reeves. Down to 45 players left and they are doing a complete re-draw for seats, so the clock has been paused as they rack their chips and play musical chairs. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:12 PM Haysam Chianara and Luke Staudenmaier have both departed. Scott Clements dispatched another player when he called the short-stack's all-in with K5. The short-stack was ahead with KJ, but both a King and a 5 landed on the flop. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 05:00 PM Marco Savoni got his last chips in with pocket 9s and got action from Paul Rodrigues with AQ offsuit. An Ace on the turn was the end of the road for Marco. | Scott Clements - chip leader
Play has just resumed after the break. Level 12: Blinds 1200/2400 with 300 antes. 45 players remain and the final 5 tables have gone 9-handed. Average stack is about 66,200. Here are the chip guess-timates from the break for the big stacks and other players of interest: |
| Scott Clements | 175,600 | | Bob Robbins | 172,000 | | Mike Somich | 155,000 | | Steven Buttery | 130,000 | | Dan Grolemund | 115,500 | | Joe Tehan | 112,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 111,100 | | Blake Buffington | 90,000 | | Alex Azadpeyma | 85,000 | | Gia Trinh | 83,000 | | Tim Anders | 81,500 | | Tony Basile | 69,000 | | Paul Rodrigues | 60,000 | | Kandeepan Palarajah | 48,800 | | Bruce Williams | 32,200 | | Monica Reeves | 25,000 | | Luke Staudenmaier | 23,000 | | Marco Savoni | 22,000 | | James van Alstyne | 16,000 |
Monday, 23rd of October 2006 04:24 PM Marco Savoni moved his last chips in with 9 8 and got called by Luke Staudenmaier with A 8 . Board came 5 3 A 7 4 and Luke doubled up, leaving Marco with only about 5K in chips. "I called with just two faces, and cracked his pocket Aces..." Monday, 23rd of October 2006 04:04 PM Paul Rodrigues doubles up through Luke Staudenmaier with AK on a King-high board. After that pot, Luke was left with only about 17K. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 03:55 PM About half-way through level 11 and 47 players remain. The pace of bust-outs has slowed as the shorter stacks have either gone broke or have built up enough chips to work with. 20 more must go before the money. "Nothing could be funner, than to win with runner-runner..." Monday, 23rd of October 2006 03:30 PM Play continues. Level 11: Blinds 800/1600 with 300 antes. 52 players remain, only one woman. Average stack is over 57,000. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 03:14 PM Back on table 3, Bruce Williams and Haysam Chiniara get all in pre-flop. Bruce's pocket Tens are in bad shape against Haysam's pocket Aces, but a miracle Ten on the river gave Bruce the set and the double up. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 03:02 PM On table 4, on the flop of J Q 5, Luke Staudenmaier bet enough to put Tim Anders all in. After some thought, Tim called, showing KT for the open-ended straight draw. Luke held AJ suited for a pair of Jacks. Last two cards were 7 and 9 and Tim makes the straight to double up and survive. Over on table 3. Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon, on the button, takes a flop with the big blind. Flop was 9 8 4 rainbow. Mark bet 8K and the other player called. Turn was a Ten and it was checked to Mark, who moved all-in. His opponent showed A8 for a pair of 8s and Mark showed 32 suited and mucked his hand, as he was drawing dead. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 02:53 PM Over on table 3, Bruce Williams raised to 5,200 and Haysam Chiniara moved all in for 15,200. Bruce called, showing pocket 9s and he was trailing Haysam's pocket Jacks. Board was 3 8 5 2 A and Haysam doubled up, leaving Bruce crippled. On the next hand, Bruce moved his last chips in and was called by seat 3. Bruce held JT offsuit and was in bad shape against pocket Tens. But the board came 8 Q 5 9 T making a straight and Bruce doubled up. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 02:34 PM Play has resumed. Level 10: Blinds 600/1200 with 200 antes. 60 players remain with the average stack approaching 50,000. During the break, these were the counts for the chip leaders and some other players of interest: |
| Steven Buttery | 157,000 | | Mike Somich | 123,900 | | Dan Grolemund | 120,000 | | Mark Mitchner | 112,500 | | Tony Basile | 99,700 | | Brian Joslin | 87,200 | | Gia Trinh | 82,100 | | Kandeepan Palarajah | 82,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 63,100 | | Luke Staudenmaier | 57,000 | | James van Alstyne | 47,000 | | Scott Clements | 44,500 | | Marco Savoni | 33,000 | | Monica Reeves | 16,000 |
Monday, 23rd of October 2006 02:13 PM Thomas Wahlroos raised to 3K from the middle and Steven Buttery called from the cutoff. Flop was T 5 3 and both checked. Turn was another 5c; both checked. River was 4 . Thomas bet 5K and Steven moved all in. Thomas thought for a while speculated that Steven held A2 and had made a straight, but finally called, showing A5 for trips. Steven held 76 for the straight and Thomas was busted. End of level 9 and players are on break. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 02:03 PM Monica Reeves gets all in with pocket Tens against A7 suited. Board was K 6 4 T 7 and Monica's set was good for a double-up to about 20K. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 01:55 PM I've located a couple of large stacks over on table 1. Dan Grolemund is probably the chip leader, with about 117,000 and Tony (Antonio) Basile has right around 100,000. 7 tables remain, so 70 or fewer players. About 20 minutes to end of level and break time. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 01:37 PM Since they did not take a break at the end of level 7, I have not been able to get a real good look at the chip stacks. The start-of-day chip leader, Steven Buttery, has lost some ground. Here are a few eye-ball estimates: |
| Gia Trinh | 87,000 | | Kandeepan Palarajah | 84,000 | | Steven Buttery | 75,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 70,000 | | Thomas Wahlroos | 52,000 | | James van Alstyne | 38,000 | | Scott Clements | 29,000 |
End of level 8 in about 35 minutes. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 01:26 PM With one player in, Chia Lim moved his last chips in from the big blind. Brian Joslin called, showing pocket 3s. Chia held A9 offsuit. Board came 4 J Q 6 7 and Chia was busted. 77 players remain. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 01:11 PM On a board of 4 8 J Q 5, Gia Trinh moved all in. His opponent in seat 10 thought for a couple of minutes before calling all in, and showing pocket 9s. Gia held QJ for top two pair and the other player was busted. Isabelle Mercier and Beverly Cheny have departed, so it is up to Monica Reeves to represent the ladies. Another table has broken so they are down to 80 players. Level 9, Blinds 500/1000 with 200 antes. Play continues. Although there were only 294 registered players, there were 4 tournament entries sold where no player appeared to play. (Those 4 stacks were blinded off yesterday.) This means the total chips in play should be 2.98 million instead of 2.94 million. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 01:03 PM On a flop of J 6 8 , Joe Tehan bets enough to put his opponent all in. Seat 8 held AJ offsuit for top pair and called, but Joe had pocket Aces and they held up to win the pot and send the other player packing. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 12:37 PM Table 11 has broken. 9 tables remain, so 90 players at most. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 12:33 PM Table 2 is hopping. There was a 3-way all-in pre-flop: Frederick Jacques with pocket 5s, Daniel Grolemund with AK, and William Szirtes with pocket 9s. Board came 4 A Q Q 2 and William was busted, Frederick was crippled down to less than 10,000 chips, and Daniel dragged a huge pot and is now challenging the chip leader. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 12:24 PM There are only 3 ladies remaining to carry the banner for us: Isabelle Mercier, Beverly Cheney, and Monica Reeves. Good Luck, Ladies! Monday, 23rd of October 2006 12:16 PM Lots of action early. On table 2, in a battle of the blinds, Marc Karam got his last chips in with AK offsuit and got called by Frederick Jaques in the small blind with K3 suited. Board came J 6 7 6 3 and that river card cost Marc his tournament. Vince Rocca, Jeffrey Rothstein, Robert Nystad, and Albert Rutledge have all busted. Table 10 has broken and there are 10 tables left, so less than 100 players remain. Monday, 23rd of October 2006 12:11 PM Level 8: Blinds 400/800 with 100 antes. Cards are in the air. | Tournament Staff
Before play begins, I have to give super-kudos to the Niagara Fallsview Casino's Tournament staff. They did an excellent job with a first-time event yesterday, keeping things running smoothly. They have enough staff that floor-people can cover the tables to answer questions and resolve disputes. No tables were kept waiting for a floorperson and staff were able to answer questions quickly and conistently. Well done! Monday, 23rd of October 2006 11:22 AM Day 2 will begin in about 45 minutes. 104 players remain and 27 will get paid. I've been told that they will play down to at least 27, and possibly down to 18.
