| Steve Buttery - end of day 1 chip leader | |
End of Level 7 and end of Day 1. Somewhere between 100 and 110 players remain. They are now going to color up the greens, then count and bag the chips for the remaining players. It will be a couple of hours before the final counts are published, but I believe that Steve Buttery is the end of day 1 chip leader with just over 100,000 chips. Once the list of remaining players with chip counts are published, they will be posted here. Play resumes Monday at noon and I'll be back, bringing you all the action LIVE right here on PokerPages.com. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 09:06 PM Another table broken and now down to 110 players with about 7 minutes left. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 08:56 PM Eli Elezra got his last chips in with AQ offsuit and ran smack into the pocket Kings held by Scott Clements. Board was 7 5 Q 7 9 and Eli was busted. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 08:44 PM Humberto Brenes is out. James 'KrazyKanuck' Worth got his last chips in with AJ and got called by a player with pocket 6s. James couldn't make a pair and was busted. Another table is getting broken, so that leaves 12, with 120 players. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 08:38 PM Down to 13 tables now, which means at most there are 130 players remaining. About 35 minutes left to play today. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 08:12 PM

| Jason Sagle | |
Jason Sagle is making his move over on table 26. He wants to let his family know he's up to 43,000 chips now! 142 players remain. Level 7: Blinds 300/600 with 100 antes. This will be the last level of the day. They will color up the green at the end of the level before counting and bagging the chips. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 07:52 PM They've just announced that 150 players remain, so half the field has been eliminated. That also means the average stack is now 20,000. Payouts have been published: |
| 1 | $250,027 | | 2 | $115,285 | | 3 | $61,245 | | 4 | $43,232 | | 5 | $32,424 | | 6 | $25,219 | | 7 | $18,013 | | 8 | $14,411 | | 9 | $11,529 | | 10 | $9,367 | | 11 | $9,367 | | 12 | $9,367 | | 13 | $9,367 | | 14 | $9,367 | | 15 | $9,367 | | 16 | $9,367 | | 17 | $9,367 | | 18 | $9,367 | | 19 | $7,205 | | 20 | $7,205 | | 21 | $7,205 | | 22 | $7,205 | | 23 | $7,205 | | 24 | $7,205 | | 25 | $7,205 | | 26 | $7,205 | | 27 | $7,205 |

Play has resumed. Level 6: Blinds 200/400 with 75 Antes. It was decided that they will play two more levels tonight, regardless of number of players remaining. This means there should be less than 150 at the end of today. Here are the chip leaders and other players of note, with stack estimates from the dinner break: |
| Luke Staudenmaier | 48,000 | | Frank Parisi | 45,700 | | Dang Trinh | 43,000 | | Ozzie Redmond | 42,000 | | Brian Joslin | 41,000 | | Marc Karam | 40,000 | | Ron Matveev | 40,000 | | Kandeepan Palarajah | 38,000 | | Scott Clements | 33,500 | | Alex Azadpeyma | 33,000 | | James van Alstyne | 32,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 28,000 | | Marco Savoni | 26,000 | | Thomas Wahlroos | 20,600 | | Eli Elezra | 20,000 | | Beverly Cheney | 20,000 | | Humberto Brenes | 18,000 | | Isabelle Mercier | 17,225 | | James 'KrazyKanuck' Worth | 7,025 | | David Levi | 6,000 | | Pete Giordano | 6,000 | | JC Tran | 2,700 | | Total chips in play: | 2,940,000 | | Average stack: | 16,610 |
Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 06:10 PM End of level 5 and players are on 1 hour dinner break. They busted a couple of tables just before dinner and announced that 177 players remain. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 05:47 PM About 20 minutes left in level 5 before the dinner break and Gavin Smith has busted out. The tenth table is being broken now, so that means 200 players are left. | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | |
David Levi doubled up when he got all in on a flop of 9 Q K with JT offsuit for the nut straight. His opponent held A J for the nut flush draw with gutshot. Last two cards were Q A . Daniel Negreanu got his last chips in on the turn with the board showing K A 8 5. Daniel held KJ for second pair, but his opponent, Henry Tran, held AQ for top pair. River was a 7 and Daniel was busted. Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon busted David Williams. David got his last chips in with AK against Mark's KJ and a Jack landed on the flop. Final player count is 294 and 27 will get paid. The payouts have not been published yet, but the total prize pool is $735,000 CAD (Canadian $$). Here are some updated chip guess-timates: |
| Eli Elezra | 44,000 | | Kandeepan Palarajah | 35,000 | | Marco Savoni | 30,000 | | Alex Azadpeyma | 29,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 25,000 | | Scott Clements | 22,000 | | Isabelle Mercier | 20,000 | | Pete Giordano | 15,500 | | Thomas Wahlroos | 15,000 | | Beverly Cheney | 14,000 | | JC Tran | 13,000 | | James 'KrazyKanuck' Worth | 12,000 | | Humberto Brenes | 11,000 | | David Levi | 10,000 | | James van Alstyne | 9,000 | | Gavin Smith | 8,000 | | Total chips in play: | 2,940,000 | | Average stack: | 13,243 |
Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 05:12 PM Level 5, Blinds 150/300 with 50 antes. The pace of bust-outs has increased and there are now 222 players remaining. I finally found Scott Clements over on table 22, so he is still in the running. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 04:37 PM The plan has been revised. After level 4, (in about 30 minutes) they will not take a break and continue into level 5. At the end of level 5, they will take a 1 hour dinner break. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 04:07 PM

| Kandeepan Palarajah | |
Play has just resumed in level 4 with Blinds at 100/200 with 25 antes. Michael Mizrachi busted out before the end of level 3. Scott Clements' table broke and I've searched the room for him and don't see him, so he may have departed. Here are some chip count estimates from the break: |
| Kandeepan Palarajah | 34,000 | | Marco Savoni | 33,700 | | Gavin Smith | 28,775 | | Eli Elezra | 26,000 | | Isabelle Mercier | 23,000 | | Mark 'PokerHo' Kroon | 22,000 | | Pete Giordano | 21,500 | | JC Tran | 18,000 | | Thomas Wahlroos | 16,500 | | David Williams | 16,000 | | Humberto Brenes | 15,500 | | Daniel Negreanu | 13,000 | | David Levi | 12,000 | | Beverly Cheney | 11,000 |
James "KrazyKanuck" Worth is also in the house, so I'll try to keep an eye on him. James van Alstyne is also playing this event. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 03:24 PM Over on table 4, seat 6 limped in, then Pete Giordano bumped it to 325. Chantel McNulty in the small blind called, as did the limper. Flop was As2c5h. It was checked to Pete, who bet 675. Chantel check-raised another 1,000, the limper folded, and Pete called. Turn was 7h and Chantel lead with 2,500, which Pete called. River was the Ts and after a few moments, Chantel moved all-in for 5,000. Pete made a crying-call, saying “You win, Sweetheart”, but Chantel showed AK for top pair and Pete held AT for a rivered two pair. Pete dragged the pot and Chantel headed for the rail. A third table has broken, meaning at most 270 players remain. I'm told the player count on the board is only being updated at the breaks and they are about 25 minutes from the next one. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 03:02 PM Table 6 has broken and those players moved. Daniel Negreanu was at 6 and is now at table 20, seated on the right of Thomas Walhroos. The board says 273 players remain. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 02:56 PM

Play has resumed. Level 3: Blinds 50/100. Before the end of level 2, Nam Le and Joe Sebok were eliminated. It looks like David Williams has taken the chip lead. Here are some estimates from the break: |
| David Williams | 29,000 | | Scott Clements | 22,000 | | Marco Savoni | 21,250 | | Isabelle Mercier | 19,000 | | Humberto Brenes | 18,000 | | Gavin Smith | 16,500 | | Eli Elezra | 14,000 | | Pete Giordano | 12,000 | | Beverly Cheney | 11,000 | | Daniel Negreanu | 10,600 | | Thomas Wahlroos | 10,000 | | Michael Mizrachi | 6,500 | | David Levi | 6,000 | | Alan Brodsky | 3,000 | | JC Tran | 1,150 |
Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 02:38 PM End of level 2 and players are taking 10. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 01:58 PM Table 5 has broken so 10 players have been eliminated. Michael Mizrachi is making a comeback -- he's back over 6,000 chips now. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 01:45 PM

| Marco Savoni | |
Play has resumed. Level 2: Blinds 25/50. Two "seat open" announcements have sounded since play resumed. During the break, I hunted down the big stack in the room and at 22,000, it belongs to Marco Savoni. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 01:33 PM End of level 1 and players on break. 6 players have been eliminated so far. Here are some chips counts for the notables: |
| Scott Clements | 16,000 | | Nam Le | 14,600 | | Pete Giordano | 13,000 | | David Williams | 13,000 | | Joe Sebok | 12,000 | | Daniel Negreanu | 11,500 | | Isabelle Mercier | 11,200 | | David Levi | 11,000 | | Gavin Smith | 10,700 | | Thomas Wahlroos | 10,300 | | Humberto Brenes | 10,000 | | Beverly Cheney | 10,000 | | JC Tran | 10,000 | | Eli Elezra | 10,000 | | Alan Brodsky | 5,900 | | Michael Mizrachi | 1,700 |
Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 12:50 PM Cards were in the air at about 12:20pm. Level 1, Blinds are 25/25. Each level is 60 minutes long with a 10 minute break after each. The TD says they will play 8 to 10 hours today, as they need to get through half the field, or lose about 150 players. There is no plan for a dinner break as food is being provided in the tournament room throughout the day for players to fuel up on breaks or during play. First pass through the room I’ve spotted these players: Gavin Smith, Scott Clements, Nam Le, David Williams, Joe Sebok, Michael Mizrachi, Pete Giordino, JC Tran, Daniel Negreanu, Isabelle Mercier, and the lovely Beverly Cheney. They are fairly well spread out around the room, so there is no obvious ‘Table of Death’ at this point. Eli Elezra and David Levi have just arrived and been seated. All 30 tables are in play 10-handed, but there are still some empty seats in the room. The first player has just been eliminated at 12:45 pm. Since players are beginning with 400 times the big blind, things should start out fairly slowly. I’ve also learned that one of the sponsors of this event gave away seats in cases of beer, so there are potentially some players here who have no idea what they are doing. The TD was kind enough not to point out those players. Sunday, 22nd of October 2006 12:11 PM Players are still filing into the Grand Hall here at Niagara Fallsview Casino, taking their seats and completing their WPT release forms for the first-ever Canadian Open Championship. Players will begin with 10,000 chips and levels are 60 minutes long with a 10 minute break after each. This event sold out days ago, so some of the late-arriving big names may not have been able to get a seat. These folks were spotted in the casino and poker room last night: Joe Sebok, Gavin Smith, Farzad Bonyadi, Daniel Negreanu, and Isabelle Mercier. Once they settle down and get underway, I’ll scope out the room to see who’s in the house. So far, I’ve seen Humberto Brenes and Thomas Wahlroos. Probably about 10 minutes away from cards in the air. The first ever Canadian stop on the World Poker Tour is the new Canadian Open at the Fallsview Casino/Resort, Niagara Falls, Ontario. There are actually two back-to-back WPT events taking place over the next couple of weeks. The first event is the WPT Canadian Open Championship. This event will take place October 22 - 24 with the final table taping for the Travel Channel on October 30th. The legal age in Canada is 19, so this event should feature some of the youngest participants ever seen on the World Poker Tour, but it is not restricted to Canadians only. This event is capped at 300 participants and as of now, the direct buy-ins are sold out. They will still be seating players via Satellite Tournaments through Saturday October 21st. Buy-in for this event is $2,500 + 200 CAD (Canadian $$). The second event is the North American Poker Championship, which will take place October 25-28 with the TV taping on October 29th. Buy-in for this event is $10,000 + 300 CAD and there is no cap on the number of participants. Looks like these events will draw lots of players to these first-ever Canadian WPT events and I will be there bringing you all the action for both events -- LIVE! PokerPages will be the only press outlet bringing you live reports on the inaugural Canadian Open event, so make sure PokerPages.com is at the top of your Favorites list!! |
