Alan Goehring Wins $2.4 Million! by B.J. Nemeth

Wednesday, Feb 22, 1:00 am -- Final Thoughts

There was a delayed reaction on that last hand, and Alan Goehring admitted that even he didn't think he had won the tournament on that last hand, until they counted the chips.

He also admitted that he was withholding information from the World Poker Tour -- today is his birthday. (I'm presuming he means February 21st, because he probably didn't realize it was after midnight when he made the comment.) He came clean during the pre-toast interview with Mike Sexton during the closeout of the show.

This will be a paradoxical episode of the World Poker Tour. The audience was very bored, because there were long periods without any appreciable action. But with some exciting chip swings and suckouts, the WPT Producers can edit out the boring stretches, and it will look to the TV audience like an exciting, action-packed event. The miracle of television.

Tomorrow kicks off the WPT Celebrity Invitational, and it'll be a very late start, around 7:00 pm PST. We're expecting a lot of big Hollywood names to be playing alongside 200 of the best poker players in the world. It should be a lot of fun, so be sure to return to PokerPages.com tomorrow for more coverage.

Wednesday, Feb 22, 12:26 pm -- Alan Goehring Wins!

Hand 144  -  Daniel Quach has the button, he moves all in, and Goehring pauses a moment before calling. Goehring shows Kd-8h, but he's behind Quach's Ad-Jh. Nobody is a huge favorite here, but Goehring will need to improve to stay alive.

The flop comes Qc-Jd-9c, and Quach is still in the lead with a pair of jacks, but Goehring has picked up a gut-shot straight draw. The turn card is the Kh, and Alan Goehring takes the lead with a pair of kings. Now Quach needs an ace or a ten to win the tournament.

The river card is the 7c, and Alan Goehring wins the hand.

The chips are counted down, and it's several minutes before everyone realizes that Alan Goehring had more chips, and Daniel Quach is eliminated in second place, earning $1,162,560.

Alan Goehring wins the WPT Commerce L.A. Poker Classic, earning $2,391,550 and a $25,500 entry into the WPT World Championship at the end of the season.

Tuesday, Feb 21, 11:32 pm -- Shuffle Up & Deal!

With the festivities over, it's time for the final two players to finish off this tournament. There's a million-dollar difference between first and second, so there's a lot at stake here. It's time to shuffle up and deal!

Reminder -- In heads-up play, the button has the small blind and acts first before the flop.

Tuesday, Feb 21, 11:29 pm -- The Money Presentation

The money presentations on the World Poker Tour are getting unoriginal. Another one featuring beautiful women in black dresses carrying platters of money to the table, followed by WPT Host Courtney Friel, who looks stunning in a red dress. Jen Creason and I discussed our favorites from the past, and we both chose the horse-drawn stagecoach from the WPT Reno event last spring. Instead of black dresses, the beautiful women were dressed as cowgirls, and they brought the money to the table in saddle bags. But it was very impressive, particularly with the live horses.

Tuesday, Feb 21, 11:25 pm -- Gavin Smith & The Grinder

Linda Johnson introduces Gavin Smith and Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi to the audience. She says, "You'll be seeing a lot of them in Season Four of the World Poker Tour."

Hand 113  -  Michael Woo has the button in seat 3, he raises to $1,000,000, and Quach moves all in from the big blind. Woo looks down with his hands on his head while he thinks for several minutes. He pops up and quickly says, "I call."

Woo shows pocket fives (5h-5s), which is in a race situation against Quach's Ks-Qd. Woo will need to improve to stay alive.

The flop comes Ah-As-Qs, and Quach pairs his queen to take the lead. The turn card is the 10s, and Woo needs a five on the river to survive. The last card is the 3h, and Michael Woo is eliminated in third place, earning $571,315.

Hand 103  -  Steven Simmons has the button in seat 1, and he moves all in for $1,795,000, and Goehring calls from the big blind with Kh-Jh. Simmons is dominated with Jc-10h, and he'll need to improve to stay alive.

The flop comes 5c-4d-3s, and Goehring is still in the lead. The turn card is the 6h, putting a four-card straight on the board that could lead to a chopped pot if there's a deuce or a seven on the river. But the last card is the Qh, and Steven Simmons is eliminated in fourth place, earning $338,803.

The next player eliminated will receive $571,315 for third place.

The flop comes 9 7 2, and Tran picks up a flush draw to further dominate Goehring's pocket fives. The turn card is the 2, and now Goehring can catch either five, as he would make a full house.

The river card is -- the 5d! The crowd is a mixture of cheers and boos, with a spattering of applause.

The chips are counted down, and Goehring has Tran covered by a single chip -- $25,000. J.C. Tran is eliminated in fifth place, earning $265,728.

Tuesday, Feb 21, 10:24 pm -- Alan Goehring Doubles Through Michael Woo

Hand 94  -  Steven Simmons has the button in seat 1, Goehring moves all in under the gun for $480,000, and Woo calls from the big blind with Jd-6s. Goehring dominates him with pocket jacks (Jc-Js), and is looking to double up here.

The flop comes Kc-Ks-Qh, and Goehring is still in the lead with his pocket jacks. But several people in the audience start shouting for a queen, which would chop the pot between them. (Many in the audience are getting restless, hoping the final table will get heads up soon.)

The turn card is the 8h, and Woo needs a six on the river to eliminate Goehring. But the river card is the Jh, and Goehring makes a full house with the case jack on the river to double up to $1.14 million in chips.

Tran thinks for several minutes with the crowd in complete silence before he finally calls with pocket sevens (7d-7h). Woo dominates him with pocket nines (9c-9d).

The flop comes 10h-10s-8d, and Woo is still in the lead. The turn card is the 10c, giving both players a full house, but Woo's is higher, and it's impossible for Tran to catch up. Even if he catches a seven on the river, he'll still have tens full of sevens. (The meaningless river card is the 3s.)

Michael Woo doubles up through J.C. Tran.

Tuesday, Feb 21, 10:09 pm

Hand 88  -  Daniel Quach has the button in seat 5, he raises to $500,000, and Tran calls from the big blind. The flop comes Qc-8d-3d, Tran checks, Quach bets $500,000, and Tran folds. Daniel Quach takes the pot.

Trivia Alert -- It took 80 hands for us to lose the first player at this final table. That sets a new WPT record, breaking the previous record of 73 hands set at the WPT Borgata event this past September. Interestingly, the Borgata event only lasted 21 more hands, for a total of 94.
